Tlie Vsubte Held on tlic Souther* Rail
road and the mobile & Ohio Railroad,
The following very important despatches
in relation to the great Yankee cavalry
raid in Mississippi, failed to reach us by
telegraph. We find them in an Alabama
exchange, which reached us last evening:
?4pJ.Uf Mi— si *

adelphia last night. They' are expected
here to-day. ■ Preparations are being made
to meet them.
SECOND DISPATCH.
... 1P.M.
Two trains just returned from Hickory
Station. Federals reported at Newton.—
They have captured two trains on the
Southern Railroad.
THIRD DISPATCH.
2 P. M.—The Yankees arc at Newton,
on the Southern railroad, thirty miles from
here. Two trains-reported captured. Enc
my’s force not known.
FOUETl! DISPATCH.
9} P. M,—The Yankees are advancing
on this place fifteen hundred strong.
FIFTH DISPATCH.
111 P. M.—A force of Yankee cavalry,
variously estimated at from live to nine
hundred, with artillery, after leaving the
line of railroad near Macon, took an in
land route, arriving at the town of Newton
on the Southern railroad, last night. They
cut the telegraph wire, burned the town
and tore up seven miles of the road, caps
tured and .destroyed a freight train and a
construction train. This morning they pa
roled the prisoners, from one of whom the
foregoing particulars were obtained. They
said they would be in Meridian by 2 P. M.
to day, but no sign of them in this neigh’
borhood as yet. It is supposed they have
gone to Enterprise, and will make their
appearance here at an early hour in the
morning. A sufficient number of troops
have arrived to’ resist any attack that may
be made.
Government Meat.
We learn that some of the pork and beef*
which was pickled in this city last winter for
the use of the army, is beginning to sonr.—
This is a matter that we have no donbt will
be promptly looked to by those having charge
of it, as we have not a pound of meat to spare.
When this soaring process commences in
pickled meat it does not btop at a small
quantity, but progresses till all is rained, un
less I be proper step is promptly taken to arrest
it. The only remedy is at onee reboil the
brine. Fanners in preserving their pickled
beef or pork uever_stop till it is twice reboil
ed. Nothing else will save it.
This is also the proper time to examine the
pork that was salted away for baeon. Any
that has not taken salt well—any that is not
. -thoroughly safe, can be delected at once, upon
being examined. Our meat supply for the
army is not by any means superabundant,
and not a pound should be lost that ean be
sived.
Dispatches Suppressed.
Several times of late, dispatches of impor
tance to the Press from the- West, have been
suppressed in transit. Some of these, and
most probably all, we have reason to believe,
were suppressed without sufficient cause, or
altogether from a mistaken idea of instructions
given on this point. ^
Last evening the* Snpcrindent of the Press
Association issued the following important cir
cular on this subject.
Atlanta, April 27th, 1868.

The Mobile BegisUr, of ihe 2(ilh, con-
tains the following:
“Ur tue Road;—We have some dis
patches which it is not deemed prudent,
m a military point of view, to publish.
We feel quite* confident that the commas
which have ventured upon this bold raid
cannot escape ‘scot free.' A rapid gallop
down a countiy where they were totally
unexpected, is one thing, but getting back,
when our Generals are advised, our troops
moving, and tho people armed, is another
thing. Unless Gen. Pemberton is mst
asleep, they' are bound to come to grief.
Gens. Loriug, Ruggles, and Gholson, with
separate columns, are all on the look out
for the marauders; and while we expect
to hear of great damage to property along
their immediate line of march, wo equally
expect to learn that they have been se
verely chastised for their impudence.
_. We hope before this appears in print to
receive some authentic information, which
we may be allowed to publish. t>ur dis
patches are suppressed lest the enemy
should derive information of the military
movements against him.
JST’Since the above was written, we
learn that yesterday noon the Yankees
were within one ,mile of Enterprise and
demanded the surrender of the town.
This was refused, of course, and our troops
