to this devout acknowledgment pf*thc merci
ful interposition of the Eord of'Hosts amidst
the rejoicings of such a triumph?. In the
palmy days of imperial. Romo, the nation’s
graUiade fdr signal success was lavished upon
the victoriohs General, and triumphal cars,
y-i.’U their long train ot manacled captives,
graced the jiroc.:ssion which passed wider the

spoke the gratitude of Athens and Lacedeinoo,

Indeed, we ore free to say that we cannot re
press our admiration of the conduct of Hie
Southern people in this isiriblc struggFe.- It
needs only a worthy cause to be regarded as
heroic. They seek to establish & detestable

news of (heir disaster on life Rappahannock
will demoralise the whole North, men, women

foreign mercenaries, Lincoln eaAndi rale6 a
levy of five hundred thousand men; bat he
may, ahd doubtless will, throw into his army
of invasion a reinforcement of two or three
hundred thousand Abolitionsls. We must,'
therefore, in the midst of onr national re-

nvrfnhhl#jWMuof restotance, and relax no
effort until a reluctant reoegnition „ of our
right to self-government is cxtortel from the
imbecile despot! who disgraces the Presidential
chair at Washington.
The cavalry i raid around Richmond con
sisted of some ten thousand men, under com
mand of Oen. Stoieman. They are divided
into five or^ix columns, and visited different
points, from wilhin threo to seventy miles Of

them by tho citizens and residents of Rich-

bonds should show themselves.
A few .days boforo tho great battle of Chan-

ment# across the Rappahannock, Hooker is
sued a General Order, which' is published in
(he Wasjington Chroniele. He congratulates
several of his airuy corps on their splendid
preliminary moVemynta, and says that such
are his plans, thit the enemy must either re-
' treat or come opt of his entrenchments and
fight on ground of “«vr own choosing:’ Thi»,
considering the result of the fighting on their
own ground, will bo the most damning record
of the war. It Will consign the Yankee brag
gart to an eternal infamy.
It is net known yet whether the eight or
ten thousand prisoners taken near Fredericks
burg will be paroled on the battle-field or sont
on to Richmond! The former is tbo more
probable, as onr means ol’ transportation will
be exhausted for some weeks to oome in meet'
ingthe requirements of the army.
I saw Col. Thomas (Zsrvcna) a few days
2 o. He looks pale, haggard and feeble train
ilong and torturing confinement, but atill
possesses all tho determination and spirit
which have rendered his name somewhat con
spicuous in this war. A few week’s recupe
ration and he will again be in the field or on
