• Among “Other .Matters” in our Saturday
evening’s Summary, we asked “Where arc the
•M.iun'rd Men’ who have not gone to the
field?” when “Minute Men” was intended.
Before tho war, theTe wai a large hurabrr ol
these men, ready lo respond at a mcmenCs
notice. According to this roll of Minute Men,
Which wo have on file, there arc a great many
of the same men still waiting for an opportu
nity to respond, as they are not in the field,
nor aro they enrolled in any other company.
The time so patiently waited for has arrived:
Come, iriends, show your hands.

General Forrest.
TLLt gentleman, less than two years ago,
then a private, but eminently useful cit
izen of Mejpphis, raised a cavalry company
at his own expense, was elected its leader,
and has been as it were, in the saddle ever
since. Ho was kept busy and 'did good
work in Kentucky whoa Sydnoy Johnston
held Bowling Green, was sent to aid in the
relief of Fort Dooelson, from which place
he (then ft Colonel) escaped at the very
.hour of its surrender by cutting a. way with
his ooipmand through - the ranks of the
«nemy ; wuawtihe battle of Shiloh, where
his services were pre-eminently useful on
various occasions; took tho town of Mnr-
freeeboro’ with several of tho enemy’s
regiments,and>as done more work—and
tiicsitsfid weri—than any oiher cavalry offi
cer ip the Confederate ccrvioe. Job Stuart
uot excepted.,
Hjs fights and successes in Middle Ten-
oesree have been wJ frequent that wa can
not now enumerate them without reference
to our fl!«. But his late charobf a brigade
of Yankee cavalry, fornix weary days And
nights, and his ultimal, mooes., in coming
up with and; capturing every mother’s
thieving Bon of them at Romo Ga., eclip
ses all other achievments of this war.
So great was his eagerness to catch ihe
enemy, and so determined was lie not to
allow communication to bo broken between
oar armies by the destruction of the Geor
gia Slate Railroad, (which was the object
of the enemy) that lie scarcely allowed
Himself and gallant followers an occasional
halt to rest or cat. “ Boys, the road must
uot—shall not—be destroyed 1 There's none
but ourselves to prevent it! The road
must be saved! '* And bravely . did his
band of five hundred heroes obey their
leaders words. Tho road was saved, and
the whole invading force of sixteen hun
dred taken prisoners. So much lor tfrtsr^
irurutioH—90 muck for energy, vim, bravery.
Whero there's a will Uiere’s a way. *
fi^rGea. Forrest was skipped over in the
last appointment of a cavalry Major-Gene-
ralehip—young Wheeler being promoted—
but we are confident that President Davis
will speedily confer that \vell-de£erved
grade «i>ou the indomitable Forrcrt.—

Position' or GaiktV . Axar.—Willow
Springs, Kock/Springs ami Cayuga, Ho at
intervals of 7 mile- apart, in a straight line
parallel with Big Black, from which they
are about 4 miles distant, while Bayou
Piere runs in their rear at a considerable
distance. Willow Springs is about ten
miles from Grand Gulf, and Cayuga is about
32 ntihs west-south from Jackson, a.-id
twe've miles from the Southern Railroad at
Edwards Depot and Big Black ' ridge,
will thus be seen that Grant occupies a
position very favorable to resisting an at
tack on his right, as forming front in that
direction his flanks would rest up the two
streams named, and if worsted he can re
treat upon Gwnd Gulf 21 the same time,
Ilia* very pretty line to cut in two. an i if.
while the fresh troops now arriving should
at lock his right, while the Vicksburg, gar*

Wc lake the following dispatch from the
Mobile Tribune, cf the 1-V.h iost.:
Bbasuor, May 1-1.—The Federate under
<Jtn. f herman, reported at thirty thousand
strong, mzio nu attack on Jackson about 12
o’clock to-day.
They Mme via the Raysaoilff road.
Oar forces, under Hen Jolmsicn, fell back
before them lowsrdi 0,-vnton.
All of the railroad rolling stock, So., was
removed.
The Federate went into the city shoaling
and yelling at 8 P. M. .
Greal exciloment prevails, and. it 1^ impos
sible lo get a correct report now. as no one
has c-,mo out of tfio city since it was oocapiod.
Bran-Ion, where the foregoing is doted, is a
station os the railroad,' 16} miles this side of
Jackson, and is the^county site of Rvnkia
Bounty. Canton, towards which Gen. John
ston is said in ihe dispatch to have fallen
back, Is twenty three mjjes lo the North of
Jact£oo, on tho Great Northern Railroad,
(from Jackson lo Memphis.) and tho county
seat of M tdbon County;
The Mobile A.lcertiser, of tho 16th, has the
following editorial remarks:
Vesterday m oo we wore advised that the
telegraph was open to Jaekren, but last night
it was only Working to llrandon, fourteen and
a half miles this side, on tho Southern Rail
road This leads ns to the inevitable conclu
sion that Gen. Johnston hail boon under the
necessity .of abandoning Jackson, and we are
inclined lo credit the report that he has fallen
back on the line of the Central Railroad, hav
iug halted at Brandou the reinforcements
whk-h were hastening to join him.
Sui-h a position wnl enable him to kmp bis
front to the enemy, resting his left upon Pearl
River, and communicating readily with the
forces collecting at Brandon. It doubtless
sails his disposition os well as his judgment
better to keep the field, than to permit him
self to be entangled in the streets of an ua
fortified town.
There appears to be no reason for apprehen
sion concerning Vicksburg, where there are
troops enough to make the place good against
any fores the enemy can bring against it, and
these, as we arc assured, well victicualed.
Meanwhile, Gen. Johnston will be daily rein
forced, and will soon 'bo able to make head
against the enemy.
Tho Montgomery Advertiser ot yesterday
niornin had advices late the evening before
from refugees from Jackson, who had tele
graphed from Brandon that fighting “began at
an early hour Thursday morning, some eight
miles southwest of Jackson, and continued
nearly all (lay, our troops commanded by
Johnston and the enemy’s by Grant. Wo were
finally driven book to Jackson and fought
them through the streets until overpowered
by greatly superior numbers, and were com
pelled to evacuate the city, tho enemy’s force
amounting to about 20,000 or 80,tKM), and our
own only to about 0,000. Gen. Johnston then
retreated on Canton. Wbon heard from yes
terday morning, Ihe-enemy's cavalry w- re at
Brandon on the Southern road, near which
|Ki s nt we had a force to protect the road. Thu
foci is official and may be relied on.”
The ;ivT«f7nfrrTnntier mjtii'.———
It is slated that some days before leaving
Tennesson, Gen. Johnston sent Gen Pember
ton an order to somewhat clwoge his pious,
which ytAS forthwith set aside by the latter ns
very improper dictation to so consequential a
commander, whereupon General Johnston re
ceived an order at the last memont on Satur
day to go to Mississippi and lake command of
the army. He left tho same day and arrived
in unprecedented time, as ba orc stated, Wed
nesday morning. We aro glad to learn that
hte complacent predecessor had re far anRci
paled the evacuation ns to have tho most iui.
poriant supplies, and the archives and other
artieles of valuo removed. Our army has four
mouths provisions at Vicksburg. We have
ample forces in communication in MGsisrippi
under the masterly lead of Johnston, to meet
arid repel tho Invadors, hut it may reqaire
some little time to put our forces fit the prop
er position.
Thte is all the information we have on tho
matter.
We stated yesterday morning that we were
not prepared to believe the rumor that J ask-
son had fallen. Wo will not now give our
reasons for doubting It—not deeming it either
prudent or necessary. Wo will only reiterate
our opinion that Grant’s army will soon-be
bagged, or tho worst wh’ppod of any Yankee
army yet. We may be mistaken In this hope
fhl view, but so confident are we of its ear-
reotness, that the v-Uy ot Jackson being sur
rendered gives us no special aneasinesa or
concern. We do not know the nature ot the
ground that is to be fought over, but we have
a strong faith that Grant haa gone to where
he will tib J it impossible to escape, anl must
fall a prey to our valiant army.
