Lo;d Lyons stated in the Ilouso of Lords
that in answer to his application to the gov

him that the American government had deter,
mined not to relcafo the mail and cargo of the

court. This statement caused considerable
discussion. Karl llardwicl'c called attention
to the fortifications at Spit head (at the month
of tho Thame.-,) and pointed to tho Charles

Czar by the Austrian and British Cabinets on

The Czar replies that the Polish struggle'has
been used against him by others, as an en

showing itny way of solving the difficulty
without self abasement.

Tire Panic and Flight of the Eleventh
Corps.
With all their lying, the Yancees are not
able lo conceal Urn panic and flight of a por
tion of their army (the eleventh corps, for
merly ScigU-’s.) in. the battles about Fred
cricksburg. A correspondent of the New
York Herald, who witnessed the “elsmpede,”
writes: .
“The flying German'came dashing over the
field in crowds, stampeding and running as
on’y men do run when convinced that sure
destruction is awaiting them. I must con
fess that I havc’no'ability to.do justiceTo the
seeno that followed It was my lot to be in
the centre of that field when the panic burst
upon us. May I never be a witness to anoth
er such fceuo. On « no' hand was a solid col
umn of infantry retreating at double quick •
on the other was a dense mass of beings who
were flying asl.fsst as their-.Icgs'could.‘carry
them, followed up by the rebels pouring their
murderous ’volleys in Aipon rs, yelling and
hooting, to increase the confusion; hundreds
of cavalry horcfs.lett riderless at the first dm-
charge, from the lebets, dashing frantically
about in all direction-: scores of batteries
flying from the Hold; battery wagons, am
bulance, horses, men, cannon, caissons ail
jumbled find tumbled together in one inextri
cable mass—and the murderous Are of the
rebels still pouring in upon them ! To add
to the terror of the occasion there was but
dhe means of escape from the field, and that
through a little narrow neck or ravine wash
ed out by Scott’s creek. Towards lbi= tho
confused mass pluogod headlong For a mo
ment it seemed as if no power could avert the
frightful.calamity that threatened the entire
army. ,
On came the panio-strickcn crowd, terrified
artillery riders spnrrlng and lashing their
horecR to their ntmoBl; ambulances upsottiap
and tiding dashed (o pieces against trees and
stamps; horses dashing over the field; men
flying and crying with alarm—a perfect- (pr-
rent of passion apparently uncontrollable —~
The men ran in all directions. They all
seemed possessed with an instinctive idea of
the shortest and most direct linn from the
point whence they slatted lo the United Stales
Mine Ford, and tho majority of them did not.
stop until they reached the ford. Many of
them, on reaching the river, dashed in and
swam to the north Mde, and are supposed to
be running yet. Tho stampede was univer

Confessing Their Own Vandalism.
Once in awhile even r Federal editor
becomes disgusted with the vandalism of
the Federal troops, anil confesses that they
.commit acts that would disgrace even sav-
ages. The New York Christian Inquirer
in remarking upon these tilings, says:
In several libraries of New England cler
gymen we have seen choice volumes of
great cost, hearing the names of Southern
ministers, to whom they still belong, al
though they had been sent Nortii by Yan
kee soldiers who had appropriated them.
Some Massachusetts parlors are said to be
carpeted with spoils of another kind. At
Beaufort South Carolina, tombs were viola
ted. At Holly Springs, Mississippi, a com
munion table was used In bell'd f of ‘euchre’
and ‘old sledge.' Such tales of wrong have
infuriated many who were disposed to be
frionds of the Union and their righteous
indignation had something to do with re
verses that havoi'overtaken our arms. • *
Character is Power.—It is often said,
that knowledge is power, and this is true.
Skill of faculty of any kind carries with it
superiority. So, to a certain extent, wealth
is power, and rank isftoiver, and intellect
is power, and genius has’a transcendent
gift of mastery over men. But higher, pu
rer and better than all, more constant in
its influence, more lasting in its sway, is
the power of character, that power which
emanates from a pure ami lofty mind. Take
any community; who is the ’man of most
influence f To whom do all look up with
reverence? Not the “smartest” man nor
the cleverest politician, nor tho most bril-
liaut talker; but he who, in ft long course
of years, tried by the extremes of prosper
ity and adversity, has approved himself to
the judgment or his neighbors, and of all
who have seen his life, as worthy to be
called good and wise.
How the Yankees Took Ma rye’s Heights.
The Fredericksburg correspondent of the
Richmond Enquirer writing on the 13th' inst.
say*:
1 have from unquestionable sources, a«i
the Yankees were dealt rations of whiskey in
oeder to get thnm up to Mnryn’s heights, and
that each hindmost man wns ordered to strike
d..wn, with the drawn bayonet, the man in his
front who faltered; that the rear guard, with
charged bayonets, urged on the whole column,
ten lines deep, and that the men thus charged
because the Y anker- officers could not relv
on their men to nse the bayonet, if once .
presort of the bayonet was withdrawn from
their rear. This was tbo second charge. In
the first charge even this precaution did not
hinder a piveipltmte retreat, some of the men
tailing back as far as the other sale of’the
river. Thus the ene-jty, throwing ten regi
ments against one, carried the “crest.” But
the diflerence between this time and December
was that two brigades then held the stone
wall; new its dbtence was entrusted to a «in-
;*le brigade amt the point wh-re the enemy
forced our lines was guarded by a single regi-
