ilrituh intervention, it ie poaeible, indeed,
that there ars among the P«terak many who

whole of our work. Wo should hare to pro
tect our ports, our rivers, and our dripping,
not only at home and in America, but all over
the world. If wo once begun euoh a war, our
own experience suggests that wc should per-
Mit in it a long time, oven though beaten the
first throe or four years. Ho, Having regard
to the want tf call, the difficulty, the chance
of defeat, and tho probable length of the en
terprise, wc should bo very sorry, indeed, to
throw ourselves into this struggle.
MASOff AMD SLIDELL NEGOTIATING IS PARIS
Paris Corre-ptniteic* Lomdun Morning Post, May 19,
Some fresh efforts are said to be making by
. (he Southern Envoys at .London and Faria with
the view cf obtaining tho recognition of tho
Slates of the Confederacy. As tho French
UoTernment took the lead in a peace policy,
perhaps bUutfi. Slidell and Mason have
doubtless mere hope cf making an impression-
at the Tnillerfes than at the Court of St.
' Jamcii. Mr. Dayton, the United States Minis
ter, and the partisans of tho Hortb, as for as
I can learn, repudiate all idea cf making peace
with the South.’ They say that the Govern
ment tf Washington will assuredly continue
the war, that the resources of the North must
(•tally exhaust the South; and that the United
Slater Government can carry on hostilities far
live years more. Tho Imperial Government
hos already learned how useless were its be
nevolent efforts to brin ' about a suspension of
hostilities. Tho American people ore not like
any ether people of the globe; they have not
taught theinooives to obey any feeling or sen
iit»*ni hut that cf their own pass oni. . North
ana Koath alike have never known defeat, and
Americans hr.vo been ciuoited to belisve that
ail they can deabs they r r.o accomplish. fth
nop.-.ess, i tear, to put r.tty coitfidcnoe in tho
tff.rts'of dipiort-ccy. If the English Govern
nienv were to make rcpre-enl Aiiom, 1 havono
doubt Fr»uo: would willingly join. If Eng
land recognised the South, France would do
the came. France desires So harmoa ; ie tter
policy with that of Grrat Britain. The Ea

England and Fiance acknowledge tho South as

uo ouoseems to discover a eolation of this dif
ficulty, with a most difuon'.t people; and,
lear, nothing can or will be doae.

The London Timet, commenting' ou the
Frenoh operations in Mexioo, says
Ono thing is certain, that all history demon-
titrates the incompatibility which exists be
tween the Spanish and French character, and
the Mexicans are to a great extent of Spanish
blood. In tho meantime, the Southern Con
federacy, mainly cf the Anglo-Saxon Trace, bo
gies to rear its gigantic proportions and to
spread its powetful tegis over the Gnlf States.
. Its people have proved themselves to be a mil
itary race and possessed of the highest char
acteristics of courage, self-denial and perse
verancc, occupying a commanding position, as
they do, between tbe two vast districts '
North and South America, they will, mot.! un
doubtedly, at a.'MO future day, whether.as
Republic or Military ltespotiem, or » Ho
areby, or into whatever form of Gorcrnme
they may eventually subside, control, to _
great ext-nt, the destinies, not only M thoir
own States, but that of tborc with which Ikcy
ars connected. Whether they will view with
favor the establishment of Fror.ch interests in
Mexico, |f such-be contemplate.I, is a question
which tho future development of r,vents must
be permitted to solve.

-*/. i—The Yankee Bald.
At an early hour yesterday rooming, it was
ascertained the telegraph wires bet ween this and
Loudon had been cat, and direct communication
between this place and that point suspended.—
About ter. o’clock a" dispatch was received from
Loudon, by way of Richmond,'Va , slating that
there were two thousand Yankees at Lenoir’s.
Ler.oir’s is twenty-four miles west of Knoxville,
and six miles this eide ol Loudon. We had
about sun aowii jw- -J.y availing, reports that
they were twelve miles from here, and some :c-
poris were in citcelaiion that they were nt the
Railroad station five miles west of Ibis. We do
not believe this Yankee force .intends lo try to
visit this pince, bui they may have ihe audacity
to sttempt it.
The following telegraphic dispatch from „
l.enoit'e, contains the most reliable information | 'f J Evans
we have of theoperations of the Yankees. .The
dispatch was received about six o’clock fester
day evening:
Lesoip.’s, June 19,18fi3.
I am hers with magnets from “
Yankcis came in eight of Loudon, but (rota
some cause, changed tiieir cout:-e and came to
Lenoir’s. They burned the Railroad Depot and
cotton sheds of Lrnoit &. Bro., with all the cot
ton. The railroad is si-o bodily tom lip above
ibis, and it will probably take several days to
repair it.
The wires wno down in ec-vererat places for
-about three or tour miles, but they are ail in
working order now.
No serioas damage haa been done except the
turning ol the Depot.
