We learo on pretty good authority, that a
general engagement was expected between

had made all his arrangements to make tho
attaek, and that Hardee was ready and uuder
orders to moke it early yesterday morning.
We oannot vouch for the correctness of this
information. It does hot come to us direct,
and it may not he true. We have no news by

Bragg has forbidden communication of any

The Brandy Station Fight.
The Bichmond Enquirer in publishing 0 u.
Stuart’s congratulatory order after the battle
of Brandy Station, (which appeared in our
columns a.few days ago,) makes tho followiug
remarks in reference, to the alleged surprise
of his command:
The following general order opportunely
rescues from the oharge of “surprise” our
gallant cavalry in the roceut - ngagemeut near
Brandy Station, and awards fitting justice to
their valor upon that occasion. The painful
rumors affecting the repu ation for vigilance
which had been linked with the fame of Stu
art’s nun for unyielding courage, are now for
ever silenoed, and we tru?t that no occasion
will ■ hereafter ariso to them, however sur
rounded by the obscurities with which it
seems to be tho pleasure of our Government to
veil the sources of our populor information,
upon which the breath of ill report may find
resting place for a single moment!’

these meji. alone, find had made their inten
tion universally known. They had ereoted
extensive baUerieB, built a military road, and
piotected their external line from the 0 P«»-
tions of General Johnston by a gigantic ditch
and 'abattis. Despite the deadly olimate, and
the water of the streams in that country, which
they would often bo forced to use, and winch
produce fever as certainly as the ® r
their marshes, Vicksburg would have been
compelled to succumb to Yankoopereoveranoe,
if the siege be not interrupted by ihe opera
tions of troops in the field. When Johnston
was hurried to tbe soene of action, there were
no troops in the field, but tbe miserable rem
nants'of tbo beaten army wbioh had been shut
up in tba town. ' The process of collecting an
effootive force has been tedious. But that It
is now enough to disturb the eioge of Vicks
burg, and to render the plan of Grant abor
tive, appears from the late intelligence.
Nothing would have forced the enemy to nis
lest assault, contradictory as it is to all bis

position is hazardous, and that it is impossible
to protract the slow process on which he relied
for success.

SENTENCE.
Getter from Gen. Houston,
Huntsville, May 27,1663
Mr. G. Bobinso*, Editor Item:—Having
for some time past, noticed the agonizing dis
tress of some of thepreBBes of Texas, a* well
as some of their contributors, relative to my
permitting my name to go before the people
for Governor of this State, I am disposed to
relievo them from their painful apprehensions,
For months past, when spoken to on that sub
jeot, I have invariably replied, that “under
no oircumslanoess will I permit my name to
be used as a candidate;” always assigning as
a reason, “that I could not see that my ser
vices oonld be of any use lo Texas, inasmuch
as her affairs were daily becoming more com
plicated; not that my-wishes were not as anx
ions and :ine;-re for tho prosperity and wel
fare of my country no they had ever been; but
my circqmstances, as welt as my inclination,
demanded of me the adoplion of the course
which I had resolved upon.” Not that .1 was
IKTIMIDATBD by PROTESTS or squibs that en
vy might suggest, or malice promulgate, witb
a view to cast a shade of suspicion upon my
loyalty and devotion to tbe couulry ; but aim
ply beoause my circumstances required it.
If I were to judgn, from the manifestations
in various parts of lh« State, from letters
whioh I have reoeived, and if I possessed half
the modesty that the proteatanls have done, I
might he assured that I would reoeive a much
larger vote than I have ever done in Texas, or
than any other candidate has ever received ;
bat even this cannot change my determination.
There are several gentlemen who desire the
situation, and amongst them 1 shall indioate
no preference. To, the will of the people
must yield! My lot with theirs is a oommon
lot. if they prosper, I hope my family and
-myself will, prosper with them. If adverse
fortune shall fall upon the people, we must
summon all our resolution and Pear it.
One thing is certain, that I will vole' for
candidate who-will not, after having sworn tm
do it, maintain tho Constitution, and vindioale
the laws made under it. If you ignore the
Constitution, from whioh the lawa have ema
nated, yon render thpm void, and plunge the
country in anarchy. The plea of “martial
law” amd “military necessity,”, whioh has no
limits, are no recompense for a violated Con
stitution, whioh has been solemnly framed for
tbe protection of this lives, liberties and pro
perty of the citizens. If it is not maintained,
life, liberty are all cuhjeot to the will of any
one who may assume lo represent these en
gines of oppression, under theplea of “military
necessity” and thereby oppress the citizens,
who, if the Constitution and laws are main
tained, will find that thoy have a safeguard
and a shield to resist wrong and oppression.
The Constitution was-intonded to protect the
rights of the humblest oilizen.
If it is oast aside or trampled down, the
ciliien has no rights, and must eppeal to the
merey of despots, instead of tbe le'is of the
land. Habeas corpus, the right of trial by
jury, are all ignored, and military tribunals
are' to be established as they have been in
Texas, and by their decision citizens are con
demned lo ignominious punishment. I have
set forth some of the principles which have
so acluated me in life, and I hope to oberish
them so long as I live. My advice to my
countrymen partakes of no selfishness, a
man of three seore years an 1 ten, as I am,
ought to at least be exempt from the oharge
of ambition, if he bhonld he ohorged with
having loved hie country bat too welL

. I have withheld information of army movement*
because I thought it impolitic to make them public.—
Western papers as late as the 5th contain my despatch
es and letters from this point. In acme things I am
styled a ‘ rebel liar,” and again daunted as good au-
“lority.
Advice* from Vicksburg leave ma ters in siatu quo,
the besieger and Ike bedeged confronting each otner.
It is not an unreasonable estimate that the enemy have
already thrown 150,000 shell* into the city, aud that,
too, without any corresponding benefit to themselves.—
AU assaults have b«;eu bloodily repulsed, and the ene
my, smarting under his punishment, is resorting to
ra>ning and all species of arts and subterfuge,'with
but * oor recompense, 'ihe troops are led to believe
that the rebel* are starving—thus keeping up an epl o-
moral courage. The Lincoln government has ordered
the capture of Vicksburg at the sacrifice of J00,0t0 men,
and the Federal Generals are fpnt tj it,” to keep their
men in anything'like fighting trim.
The enemy !■ largely reinforcing, and the river is
foil of boats bringing forward troops and supplies.—
The operations of Ta/lor and Walker on the opposite
side of Vicksburg will greatly embarrass thee nemy, but
~ t’o not think that they will cause him to move
any.
f rom Port Hudson I can hear but little. Banks has
the place invested, und of course communication are
precarious. Banks cannot carry the place by assault,
and if he will stay there long enough, he will find U far
more difficult to get away than to make his investment.

And the court does therefore sentence him,
James Suowiicn Pleasants, a citizen of Mont
gomery county, Maryland, “To bn hung by

thorities,” two thirds of ihe member* of tho
court concurring therein.

Formidable BcslatHisoa to tbo Enrollment
tn onto.
Columbus, Oato r June 16—Another and a
formidable resistance to the enrollment exists
now in Hulracs county. It appears that some
days ago warrants were issued by the United
States court at Colnmbue for the arrest of about
ten persons in Holmes county, on charges of in-
terferring with the enrolling officer. The prop
er officers have been prevented from making ar
rests by an armed force of 600 or 700. The force
is organized and encamped, and is preparing for
a fight. Entrenchments are being constructed,
so that, witb (ome cannon which they have, they
can offer serious resistance. A force of the 3d
Ohio left here this evening to clean them out,
which will be most effectually done, if an oppor
tunity is given. 1 hie is the most serious oppo
sition to the enrollment in Ohio which has yet
been reported.
