Th* Marietta Front.
Lost night our line* extended from the
Kanneetw Mountain toward* Broth Moun
tain, on the right, oad on the left, touth-
we*t front Marietta to a chain of hills
which command and reach to thoChatta-
hoocnee xirer. This lino, though an **•
tended one. U.taid to poMMfimxny ad
tag no of defense, and all th« gap* are
strongly ghagded. .The position in front
of Marietta is a natural defense, with the
Big Kennetaw and Little Eennesaw, equal,
it it said, to a corps of musketeers.
On Monday bright the enemy charged
Walker’s Dirisoo, situated in the vicinity
of Powder Spring, and were handsomely
rrpoised. Abqot nine, o'clock the same
evening; a brigsde of Walker’s Division, in
turn, charged the enemy, when a brisk
fight ensued, almost band to band, as some
of the participants report, which resulted
in the driving of the enemy back upon
their works. In this charge many of our
men were severely wounded and a number
billed. Colquitt’s old regiment (4Gth Os.)
suffered severely, every officer in the regi
ment having been hit but eleven. Some
of Use wounded vow brought down last
evening, and on the same train fifty-four
Yankee prisoners.
Two regiments of flirt’s Brigade, the ICth
S. C. sod the 46th Georgia, were engaged.
In the former, Msj. (f C. O’h’iel was killed
and Gapt. W. A.Gibb*,Co.D,ehot through
the thigh. In the latter, Capta. Collyer,
Co. A , and Tilinan.'Co. 0. and Lieutenant
Wonnack, were killed. The Yankee force
being, very large, they held their line, but
with severe lass. Our men axe said to have
fought with great spirit.
A continued movement towards the left
by tha enemy has compelled counter-
movements on our part. Hood’s corps and
Hardee’s now occupy a position in the
neighborhood of Smyrna Church.
There was spike skirmishing yesterday,
comparatively insignificant in result.

The following sensible suggestions of our
contemporary of the Biobmond Sentinel
are peculiarly applicable to this latitude
at the pruent moment, when In the very
burden sod hast of the cam pain, as w*
now are, it behoove* os to pat fdrth every
energy to secure tnocem, and to crush, as
well aa disappoint, tha armies of the in
vader. The Sentinel sayt: "To beat the*
enemy is now oar absorbing business—the
business of the government, the basinets
of our Generals, the business of every
toliler, ami the business of every citizen
Srery man should be ready and eager to
give hi* help in every practicable way
and this is the day and the hour when
there should be • universal and concurring
endeavor.
“Wo do not believe our people are as
fhlly aroused ss they should be. Thfj arc
resolved, they are patriotic, they are brave;
hut they are not ao eager and wide awake
as is now necessary; The enemy are con
ducting against us a most extraordinary
and ferocious warfare. Afraid, or not con
tent, to make a trial of strength between
opposing armies, they are sending armed
parties throughout our iand, to plunder'
ttft people, to bum mills and barns, to
steal horses, and to spread general desola
tion. These go out with no stores of their
i own, and with orders to seize their living.
I In other :.ords, they sue sent out precisely
as robbers and incendiaries;' and faithfully
they execute their mission. Officer* and
men, they steal spoons, they rob pantries,
they take from families not only the whole
of their supplies, bnt the very bread that
1* on the table. We have heard of cases
in which they have taken literally every
thing, and laft the little children crying
in vain for a morsel of food.
"Seeking our oonquest by their great
armies, they seek onr starvation, and ruin,
and destruction, by their predatory enter
prise*.
" We must fight these invaders with all
the weapons of destruction. Our armies
will take care of the enemy’* armies; but
our citizens, even those not in the reserve
force#, must lend a baud whenever oppor
tunity offers, against the robbers that ride
raids. Whenever la citizen sees one of
the**; let him be assured that he sees a
villain, whom he should shoot if he can,
as eagerly as be would'shoot a bear or a
panther. Let no mistaken idea that for-
' bearance will induce indulgence, stay the
hand or stop the ballet. The Yankees
are making this a war of robbery, and to
the death. Worse than the highwayman
who demands your money or your life, they
seek our money and ourlives. A shot well
aimed from rock, or thicket. Or mountain
side bush, will visit a just retribution, and
have a wholesome moral influence. It will
intimidate raids a* well as punish raiders.
in time of war, and especially within the
v.-dnsge of a city or town threatened with
siege or raid, many rights of the 'citizen
must be necessarily encroached upon.
Property, of no m it ter what character,
must be sometimes pri-uad into the ser
vice of the corps for defense. To all of
this no reasonable objection can be offered,
when it is made patent to the understand
iog of ell that the temporary inconve
nience is occasioned only to preserve the
liberties of the inconvenienced.
Bat there are objections, and serious
ones, to the manner of fmpreeement, and
the .lack of discrimination in many in
stances wheresome discriminstion u abso
lately requisite' and proper. We fear
1 there la a little tdfe much looseness, and
Ttn ' even recklessness, in-the performance of
certain orders under instructions from
distant headquarters, approach to which
is forbidden, for redress.
A commanding General issues ao order
for the impressment of servants to work
on the public defences. Theorder passes
from one official to another and final]/
rests in the hands' of the acting official
who has to perform the task of making
the impressments. This official, in tnnr,
issues his orders to a subordinate, who
directs a guard to arrest and impress, re-'
gxrdleos of passport or permit, and who
performs the duty without written author
ity. In many instances, the guard who
may be a private soldier, or a corporal or
sergeat, of limited education and experi
ence, and of no judgment whatever, who,
of course, can only follow out the order*
given to him. Impressments are made
indiscriminately. The most flagrant in
justice is not unfreqnently done, under
the authoritive and positive watchword of
'obeying orders.” i
“Orders” are “obeyed,” uubapily, far
ther than the intent of the law, or the
design of the authority. Careless subor
dinates are too apt to transcend authority
and much trouble is occasioned, vrherj.
every thing might wdrk harmoniously and
smoothly, if a real man of genius and
energy and industry, exercising his* men
tal faculties a little, and using some little
discretion in the. administration of his
created office, should have this whole
matter of impressment in charge. There
is a lamentable lack of brains in {fie dis
charge of-dnties of this nature, and im-
portant orders too often, alas, fall into the
bands of the incompetent, creatingmuch
dissatisfaction and clogging the wheels of
machinery which now, more than .at

Therein no law for impressments in such
a manner. Officials' who seem to think
that military law is paramount to aliother,
must be taught, at least, to keep their
men under better control, while insolent
guards going beyond their authority
should be arrested and confined in
guard-hoase.
There can be no reasonable objection to
impressment of negroes, where their ser
vices are required, but the"* authority to
impress give* Ml individual no right to per
petrate outrages upon the rights of citi
zens, and to offer insolence and threats of
violence under cover of that authority.

Th* great- Federal raid, ao abruptly
brought to a check in front of Marietta,
is still characterized by a maiterly in
activity so for as it* nearer approach to
Atlanta is concerned. At lost accounts,
Sherman, baring despaired of making
successful passage by our right flank, was
once more swinging towards the left, on
new tack. The new movement has made
but little progress, with miry roads, in
addition to Johnston’s army, os a perplex
ing circumstance. To move too for to the
left, and thereby uncover his temporary
base, of the Etowah Bridge, would seem
to beget a new perplexity, to be overcome
before further progress in the “ on to At

great Yankee raider is a man of dash, and

they possessed the much coveted privilege ot
the entree. Happily for the creditof the Crown
end or tho country, “Note atone change tan

The monster drawing room of last year,
when the Princess of Wales was called upon to
wipe.off in a few honrs the sccnmnbtione of
two seasons, precedtd ss it was by a levee ot
equally formidable extent oi the Scandal: A
little patience and a good deal of perseverance
worked wonders ins very short time. It
discovered that, if s proper number of ebsire
were provided, tidies could be lndurad to sit
down in row*, end that a* large s number con'd
be thni accommodated as if ell crowded itfilb-
criminstely towards tbs door. Tbo great feat
wee successfully accomplished of drawing e
red cord across the doorway ts escb room be
came actually fell, not to be removed until e
sufficient number had been ptiged on into the
next apartment.
■ Finally, rite obnoxious staircase wae divided
by a partition designed, like the letticnofa
mine shaft, to separate the “upetst” from the
“dowocalt-” The result woe such as to outdo
tu* moat sanguine expectations. On Tuesday
list, no less ’ban ono hundred and thirty bdiea
were presented, and probably at least fonr times
at mupy betides were presented .jl the draw-
iog room, yet the stream flowed on evenly sad
uninterruptedly for two hours, nntil all had
passed, without any mote obstruction than wee
created by those who lingered in the long corri
dors to see their friends, end rendered ft occa
sionally. for n few mionteo. almost impassable.
Of course people began to wonder why expe
dients so obviously desirable in themselves
wero never suggested before. The simple anv
ewer is that they were so, over and over again,'
by tb* prase, bat that its suggest tony were so
often pboo-phooed by the nonchalant apathy ot
th* officials.
