From VickeLurg to teeridian, or fro™
Dalton to Marietta—through < eotral Mn-
•iatippi. Or tfrer the North Georgia plain*,
~ 00 and off thfi ran3{*aga,
the redoubtable Sherman baa e*tabii*bed
himaelf the prince of reckleta raider*,
merely. Devoted Atlanta ha* been ap
proached by frog-leap., when Grant would
have reached it by aaucceaiion of crawl
and creep*. The forU of one it raid*—or
tho otbor spade*. The eourae of the first
ha* be*n terpentine and zig-zag, like tb«
trail or a truth ten ed snake. while the
ecoond would hate burrougbed blind'y ug
to it like a mole. It wa* never fated to
foil into the hand* 6f either. In the
meantime the anake ha* been “scotched
but not killed," by Johnston. Mile* more
of valuable territory have been added to
the acquisition* of the encroaching inva
der, and the presence of hi* legions »lill
meander our tranquility and weary us
with suspense. We have already paid a
price io blood from Resaca to Marietta
tufflcient, perhaps, to have purchased, if
not a decisive victory in one desperate
encounter, at least a cessation of this con
tinuous, deadly ilisrp-shooting ana sick
ening mutilation of. limbs, day after day.
Ia there so remedy for thist In the
Army of Teaneesee is a force of upwards of
ten thousand half organized.cavalry. Com
posed of many officer* of ’military jenins
and originslRjr ef conception, it is rat. a
monster without a head—inef&otuai and
useless. Does any practical judgment
halt in the opinion that- this immense
fore* of mounted veterans, with proper
menagrment under a great leader, of dar
ing and dash, ocuid not utterly destroy
ihtv insolent Federal invasion, and cut it
ed completely from iU resources f wed*
not believe User* is a practical, thinking
man. tnilitaiy or civil, in thd Confederacy
but will agree with os that Forres!, within
twenty-four boars, could so systematize
end organize this force for a sweep upon
the enemy's rear that would havs more
to do withSherman’s destruction tlan all
the breastwork* and strong natural posi
tions tletwceu the Chattahoochee and tha
gulf The record of the man is the best
testimony aa to what he could accomplish,
untrammeled and unrestricted.
Tbe expedition of Sherman ia subsisted
with great difficulty, over n long tear line
of communication. Block his transporta
tion for twenty-four hour*, end h.- could
not move a peg. forward, andwodcubtif
be oould even go . backward unleu in a
demoralised condition. Ohl for twenty
four hours of the “Wizzsrd of the Ssd
die," or any other .kindred spirit, nith
much original inventive genius and com
tnon sense, to place himself at the bead o!
this'poworful cavalry force, redeem it from
the present sluggish inactivity, and lead
' it on the invaders trail. Forrest, with
these ten thousand men could tear *p th*
roadroad from Big Shanty to the Tennes
see river. Be could fell trees acr&ss every
wagon road and blockade every bridal
patb, and yet have time enough, and
men enough to hang upon the enemy’s
track, harms* his flacks and rear, and
starve him out and ept him to pieces at
the tame moment. Nothing would so
effectually end this stupendous raid upon
Atlanta, and so speedily relieve North
tin.-rgia rtf l>.r h*onprSHO-’
The cavalry of the Army of Temassee,
under it* present management, is a useless
encumbrance. With Forrest at its bead
on a mission such as we have just intima
ted, would be wo*th a division of rein
forcemeat-. • WheS it is known every,
where, that these thing* could be accom
plished by the directibn and management
of Forrest, why. in tho name of Liberty,
is }ie not called into a field where a pres
ence like bis is so needful.
y Among the brave and honored
dead, who have fallen during the cam
paign, we are called upon to.mourn the
loss of Heat. James W. Wofford, of the
40th Georgia Regiment.-
On the evening of the 18k, whilst
Stuart’s Division wss supporting the
Division of Gen. French, youDg Wofford
wa* struck with a solid shot, mangling bis
body frightfully and killing bimin*tanily.
By hi* death, the army ha* lost a valu
able, brave and efficient officer, and hi.
Regiment and Company have been de
prived of a friend and companion whose
social qualities won for him the esteem of
all who knew him.

how happy I am. When I am at work my
wife is at my side, and at.the conclusion
of each paragraph I embrace her. That

retorted, ".why yonr paragraphs are so
short." Thi* conversation . soon spread,
and from that time Y’s articles were con
suited as the thermometer of his conjugal
felicity. During two months Y’a.articles
were disjointed and curt, and all the wo

gradually the periods elongated, and at
last Madame V opened Mr. Y’s ptper,

The reoepticn of the President toiday, con

on behalf of ibe fair, and taken in charge;'
they escorting her to the fair and paying her
every attention.
After dinner, Mayor Hetury, at this head of
