ANECDOTE.
BEANS and BACON.
PHF.I.TM O’MORE, was indifted at a coun
ty afflse, in In-laud, for a rape. His de
tence was ingenious.—He gave in proof that he
bad a garden of Means, in which the nrofreutrix
committed, nightly, trefpallcs and depreda
tions.
Tl .it having caught her stealing his Beans, he
declared, if flic came again, Ihe might exp'-ft
such conlequences as thofc ihe swore to on the
trial.
She came, and he kept his word.
The court were of opinion, that the notice
and the trcfpaflits in the Bean Garden, purged
the a£t of felony, by shewing a content a priori
in the proiecuuix—and the culprit v/zs acquit
ted.
As he departed from the bar, Mr. Costello,
who had been Counsel againllhim, said —“ My
good friend, you have made a tnofl excellent
defence to favc your Bacon , but a vc; y bad one
to favc your Beane.
Aod it was remaiked, that poor P/te/ntrwould
never afterwards keep Beans in his garden—
“ th : women,” as he laid, “ would be after
pulling them and pulling them.”
