the treatment djcnbtd by Ivl. Gillet.
Mr. Ed 1r or ,
‘THE circuinftar.ee of cur having
been perfonaily attached to general La
Fayette, by the duties of cur ftaiion in
his army, and more particularly by the
confide ration of his private and public
virtues, interested our liveliett feelings
and gratitude in that pathetic deferip
tion lately made by Mr. Fox, of inno
cence tortured with the moft relentless
and savage brutality. All the iiicnds
of humanity and liberty willfympathize
in the eloquent grief of the great states
man, and in that burst of indignation and
for row which broke from every part of
the house of commons. But all the
colors and pow ers of eloquence can nev
er do justice to the unparalleled fuffer
ings of the unfortunate La Fayette, i'o
jultly entitled to the praise of being a
man of the moft uncorrupted nature.
Let the tender and cotnpalfionate hearts
of the Britidi fair, and the boaited gene
rosity of Engliftimcu, contemplate that
gallant and diflinguifhed characler, feiz
cd upon neutral ground, and from the
month of August, 1792, buried alive in
cold, fubterraneous, lolitary dungeons,
deprived of exercise, of air, of the light
ot heaven, of all interoourfe with hu
mane beings ; stripped ot all his clothes,
before his being plunged in his iait dun
geon at Olmutz, and clad like a galley
llave in trowiers and waifteqat ot fail
doth; enduring in that condition the
memorable winter of 1794 ; destitute of
every thing, reiufed even a knife ad
fork, and the scanty comforts allowed to
felons ; obliged to lie on the It raw and
a miserable mattrafs, the relick of his
Prullian prison.
Such is the treatment, Mr. Editor,
which for four years pait La Faveue,
La Tour-Maubourg, and Bureaux de
Pufy, have experienced from those very
governments, profeliing to l'uppert a
gainst barbariaus regular and reiigioui
establishments. Your readers will, no
doubt, think it impofiihle to ha.e ag
gravated futh fuffcrin*gs, to have (ported
•more outrageoully with all the laws of
justice, all the laws of nations, the pangs
of innocence,, the groani.igs of humani
ty, the unmixed detestation of mankind.
But La Fayette was doomed to be
wounded in the moil sensible litres- of
his heart ; to fee his wife, with his two
daughters, lharing in ail the horrors of
a captivity, unparalleled even under the
tyranny of her former gaoler, Uceerf
pierre. She was forced to fubmir to
iuch condition, as the price of her atten
dance upon her l.ufband ; vainly did die
apply, not for a female hervant infteadof
a male,, us tiicy were never allowed to
: have ar.y one, but fora female attendant
upon her two daughters,, young women
oi fixreen and eighteen years of age, as
they are shut up every night in a iepar
ate dungeon by a soldier, and arc under
his foie keeping and diferetionary in
fpedion : Hie was refufed by the govern
or ot the Olmutz baftiic. Vainly did
fine entreat for leave to attend divine
service, and to seek for those con/ida
tions of religion, so consonant with her
religious principles, and so necelfary in
her present situation. At last, Msdatuc
La Fayette, more alarmed at the decline
ot her husband, linking under such pres
sure of milcries, than at the rapid decay
of her own health, begged, again to be
allowed to go andconfuit the physicians
of Vienna. Did they grant such te
quo ft ? No; the was abfoluteiy refufed
I permission to go to Vienna, or it fi e r, b*
j tained leave to quit her dungeon, it was
only on condition of her never vilm n S
it, and perhaps never feeing her Lufbancl
again ; Ihe chose to die with her t.ei
