SAVANNAH, Auguit 26.
Communication.
A correspondent who has taken feme
{wins to difeover the source of the alarm
which has lately taken place in this town;
from the apprehenlkn of a malignant
epidemic fever, said to be raging in
Charleston, allures us that he is enabled
to give to the public the following
whimsical account of it.
Scrr.e travellers from this Hate to
Charleston, were so terrified on the road
bv a report that the Teilwu Fever, then
said to infeft that city, had made its ap
pearance in the neighbourhood ol Jack
lonborough, a village about thirty fix
miles this fide of it, with ail its malig
nant features, that they aftuallv return
ed. Itfeems, however, that they had
been confolcd, by the information that
an infallible ar.d l'pecdy remedy w as there
dilcovered for it, confiding in plentiful
u ciions of mercurial ointment. These
aftr-ghted wits spread terror as they
rej ailed, ‘till the alarm reached this
town.
Our correspondent remarks, that
u was a pity that the hitherto un
beard of abiurdity of this prcpofterous
remedy, had not pointed out to them the
pdacy, they would have then confniered
11 w Lat it must undoubtedly have been,
*i’t o/J woman's tale ; they would have
” arlelsly pursued their journey ; and
We ftiould not here have incurred that
hi re of p rec ipi tancy, which ou r neigh -
hours of f Chalefton have so liberally be
dovved upon us.
e hear from the Westward, that, a
‘ ew days since, John Lamar, Esq. of
Hancock county, was waylaid and woun
ded, near his plantation on the north fide
‘-d the Oconee river, by a party of C reek
Indians. The inhabitants collected and
followed the trail 20 miles without bc
fng able to overtake them. It is also
a 'd that feveial horses have been stolen
ffom Greene county, since the commence
fu-nt of this month, by Indians of ti.e
