Vol. !• of Great-Britain as juf independent Hate. We.cannot, how ever, think that our mimfters will be of he fame opinion; or if they Ihould be of that opinion, that they will avow it; and, aided by the strong prejudices and oride of Engliftmen, which they so well £nown how to turn to their own account, there seems every reason to bfcueve that they will rejeCt the propofmons oi Spain, and that we (hall have to encounter the ‘dee of the Spanish monarchy, combined with that of the French and Dutch re publics. NASSAU, (n. p.) Augull 26. Bombard, as formerly mentioned, sur rendered to the British arms in J une, on terms unufuaily favorable to the garri son. U has f jnce i )Cen evacuated, and is no w possessed by the French. A lamentable mortality has taken place among cur troops at the Mole. Brigadier general Howe, col. Dundas, £n g many other officers are dead. Gene j.:j White commands at the Mole, ana general Forbes at Port-au-prince. r i'he French troops lately from Eu rope, had fullered much from freknefs. The adion in the Weft-Indies, al luded to in a former paper, was between tPe Mermaid of 32 guns, capt. Otway, and a large French 44. Naval men fay, it is amongst the moll gallant things performed this war. The Frenchman was quite furc of his prize ; but the Mermaid treated him so roughly, that at the close of the day he was glad to get off. The Mermaid refitted, pur ged, and was next morning on the point of taking her superior opponent, when an unlucky (hot carried away cue other mails. On this the neceifary advantage was taken, and the Frenchman ran into St. Thomas’s, where he lay a perfect wreck, with many of his pot holes beat in. August 30. The mailer of an American velfel that arrived on Sunday evening in five days from St. Mark’s, gives us the fol lowing intelligence—The brigands ap peared in considerable force, and having formed an encampment near the town, it was determined to attack them in that pofttion. Accordingly on Sunday morn ing, the 14th inltanr, the regulars and militia, making a coniiderabie body of men, marched out of St. Mark’s, at tacked the enemy, and soon put them to the route. The dragoons are said to have made dreadful havoc with their fab res. The disorder which has made such ra vages at Cape Nichola Mole, is laid to have been introduced with the troops that arrived in May, front Ireland, ft is the infectious putrid fever generated amongll people in confined lituations; and from the heat of the climate jof Sr. Domingo, has become molt rapid in its prog refs. A great many of the medical gentle men at St. Domingo, have fallen victims to this disorder. We are informed, that col. Dundas died on the paflage out ; and that brigadier general Howe is not dexid, but gone to Europe for the recoverv of his health. September 6. This morning we had an arrival from Cape Nichola Mole, by which letters cf the ill inil. are received. One of thefc fays, that the Magidenne frigate had arrived with dispatches to our com manders on the Welt-Jndia stations, an nouncing the expectation of an immedi ate rupture with Spain ; to produce winch, menaces of the moll alarming na ture had been used to the court of Mad rid, by the French directory. So con fident was the captain of the frigate of a Spanilh war having actually taken place, that he captured a rich Spanish vessel, tmd sent her into Kinglion. We are told, that dilcovery was made C! the intentions of the Spanish court to comply with the requisitions of their do mineering republican ally, by the detec tion of fome French and Dutch dis patches in a vefiel failing under Spanilh colours. On the 18th ultimo, arrived at Ra- Icigh, (North-Carolina) from the state of Tenneiiee, Sury county, col. Hub hard, diftinguilhed by the Indians for his undaunted bravery ; who brings ac counts that the Creek Indians have late ly broke out unprovoked, Hole about 20 horses, and marched out of the set tlement very deliberately; having made but a lhort day’s march, they were fol lowed by a party of adive white men and overtaken, but their number was too formidable for an attack ; they were all mounted and well armed, in number (as well as the white men could gueis at the ditiance of 200 yards) about three hundred. The white men left letters on the trees where they made a Hand, in forming the Indians of the great evil which luch lawiefs condud might bring upon their nation, reminding them of the deftrudion the Shawanefe brought upon themlelves in conference of fuel) condud and their blind attachment to their beloved man over the water. ‘l'his gentleman further informs, that about ten thouiand of the citizens of that country are prepared to fettle the lands in the Big Bent of the Tenneiiee, as low downas the Muscle Shcals, claim ing under a purchale made of the In dians, and by a grant obtained from the state of Georgia. N EW- YOR K, Septi 12. By Captain Plummer arrived at Bos ton, from Cette, Barcelona and Gibral tar, we have much thelateft news from the fouthef Europe. At Barcelona, July 3, the following was given by a gentleman as the current news of the place. “ We had an account yesterday, that an event expeded lor fome time past, had at length taken place, namely, the occupation of Leghorn by the French. About 700 men, chiefly cavalry, having come to Piftoya, and on the road to wards Sienna, ft ruck down suddenly on tiie morning of the 27th of June, and took poUeffion of Leghorn, evidently .with the expedition of surprising the Eng.ifh, and plundering their property. As the Lngiilh were, however, appriz •i of their vifir, every thing moveable was carried off, even to the Jaft spar or coil ot rope, belonging to the squadron, as well as the effeds and furniture of in dividuals. Twenty-three square rigged veflels, with sixteen Tartans, laden, lail ed out of the harbour the morning that the enemy sintered the town. The news tfiat we have from Genoa, in five days, confirm the defeat and daughter of the I reach, at Chinfa, and give reason to ex pccl, that the Auurians may have forced them by this time, to recross the Po.” At Gibraltar, war with Spain was talked off. Off’Cadiz, palled through the Eagiifli fleet, cruising for Richery. September 16. By a gentleman who came paflenger in the Jenny, from London, we have received London papers to the 28th of July. Among the moft important ar ticles arc the official accounts of the ad vances ot the French armies to, and the capture of the city of Frankfort. Oth er articles begin to speak more confi dently of a negociation for peace hav ing taken place with the emperor. On this fubjed, a letter from a gentleman at Deal, to his friend in this city, dated 26th July, has the following remarks: “ I have just landed at this place from Havre* There is pofitivc news that the emperor has acceded to the terms pro poled by the French, and that peace will Ihortly take place.” We are authorized to inform th* pub lic, that the two commiifioneis for fet tling the true St. Croix river, as the boundary line between the United States and the Britilh territories, have chosen Egbert Benlon, efq. one of the Judges in the supreme court in this state, to be the third commiflioner, and have dif patehed a veflel to this port to condud him to St. Andrew, where they are to convene for the accomplishment cf the bufinefsi The express has arrived here ; judge Benlon is abl’ent in a northern county, and advices are forwarded to him. Whether he will accept or not, we cannot inform the public. More of Capt. B a r net. Brig Commerce, Captain Isaacs, ar rived on Saturday from Baltimore. Reports were circulated in town vef terday, said to have been received by a gentleman from Bourucaux, Hating, that Iteih tumults had broke out in Paris, and that the celebrated Tallien had been (entenccd to death. A recurrence to dates and the paflage of the veflel, ren ders the report “ highly improbable.” September 14. The accounts from Lilbon by the In dependent, wear a very gloomy afpeX ; an universal consternation pervaded the court and the people of all ranks, in confequencc of the hostile threats of the French, and. certain notifications from the court of Madrid upon the political connexions fublifting between the courts of Lilbon and St. James’s. It was understood at Lilbon, that the Spanilh minilter had officially fignified the intention of his Catholic majelty to permit a French army of 70,000 men to march thro'his dominions into Portu gal, unless the latter court, without de lay, ihut all her ports again!! and for bid the future entry of Britilh veflcls. r l he mol! active preparations were however carrying on in all parts of Portugal, to raise an army for rhe de fence or the country ; and the expcdiei t of impressing men for the army had been r Tor ted to, in order to accomplilh the more speedy collection of a large army. The firit divilion of the Brazil fleet had a ■rived ; the second being the moft valuable was hourly expected. By the Brig Betfcy, from Lilbon, let ters base been received in this city from Algiers, dated June 16, from one of which the following is an extraCl : “ The plague ft ill rages here. Nicho las Hartfon, Abraham Simmonds and Joseph Keith, have died of it; Benjamin Lunt, and John Thomas, are in the hos pitals, among others of our unfortunate fellow citizens—of whom ninety remain Hiil here in captivity.” September 15. A Fortuguefe paflenger in the last ar rival from Lilbon, informs, that the French government has made a requisi tion on the court of Portugal, that they Ihould pay twenty millions of crowns, andlhat their ports again!! the Britilh— and threaten, in case of non-compliance, to march 30,000 men through Spain in to Portugal. The above may account for the following measures. Extra 3 of a letterfrom an eminent houfc in Lijlon , to a merchant in this city, dated July 23. “ T his court has laid an embargo on the Dutch Ihips, and forbid all inter course with the states of Holland—a rupture not in the leaf! expeded. Em baifies are fending to London, Madrid, and Paris, and a levere press making for the army, which indicates a rupture for Spain : it is hoped thele hostile move ments will subside as loon as an explana tion t akes place, through the interven tion of the envoys.” WASHING TON, August 23. Doctor Bollman, who so courageous ly attempted the delivery of the unfor tunate La Fayette from his prison, is now making the tour of this county, not as a casual observer, but as a phTo fopher, examining minutely into its beauties, curiofitici, and natural advan tages. BALTIMORE, Sept. 16. We arc happy in having it in our power to dispel all doubts ref peeling the faf ty of Commodore Barney. For the fol low mgJ'atisfaciory and authentic infor mation, we arc indebted to the kindness of a gentleman who has favored ns with an ex trad of a letter Jrom the Commo dore ktmfelf, dated, “ At Sea, off Bermuda, On board the frigate Harmony, September 3, 1796. “ Five days ago, I expeded to have been with you at Baltimore. As I ar rived in fight of the light-houfc on Cape Henry about 12 at night, I fuw fix fail of Ihips, which I immediately fuf|>eCled to be Britilh. My division, confiding of two frigates and an armed transport, not being fufficiently strong to attack them, I instantly Hood to the caftward, the enemy not observing my movement. At uay-light I observed a frigatea-ltern of us, who made fcveral signals ; I gave her ehace, and (he run from me. About an hour afterwards, (he was going by live others—among them two-Ihips ol the line. I then thought it prudent to I take care of myfelfand divilion, andac -1 * cordingly ltood to the caftward. They gaining on us very sass, (having got the Breeze) I was obliged to abandon the armed transport, who did not fail well i and flic was taken by the enemy about ? o’clock. 1 hey continued tochaccme and my Irigate all the evening and night, Ne\t morning, found my felt near one of the enemy’s frigates and offered her bat tle, which he politely refufed. lat the fame time observed another of their Ihips on our lee-quartcr, which I took for a ihip of the line ; in confequcnce, I again made fail, and they continued to chafe us all the lecond day, but without effeX, as we out-failed them.” CHARLEST ON, Sept. 30.
