The BEAU ani CRACKER.
NOT long ago a city Beau, t is (aid,
, A visit to his friend i’the country made ;
One traded always on delicious tare,
The other led his litc with toil and cic.
‘1 he Cracker luck was Caving of hi. (lore,
Vet nobly gave Isis Itiend enough and more;
> loc-t.nk.rs Sc milk, he brought to pieafe histaftc,
And fryed chickens deck’d the rural lead :
Wliilft he himfelf very contentedly Cat,
And till’d his vacuum with mnfli and fat.
1 tie vi titer then to the Cracker said, I my friend
* Why do you chooic in woods your time ti
tpend i’
‘ Had you not better live in the fine town,
* Than dwell ou dreary Tandy hills alone i”
Come go with me since life is !mt a name,
t As (mail and great with death arc ail the tame
Where you can live in wontonnefs and play,
< And pals in luxury each jocund day.’
Such fine words, began the Cracker to melt,
And from his quiet hut, to the city went;
The bright moon withufual splendor flume,
Redoubled luflre on the dewy lawn.
At length the travelers, with drooping eyes,
The noted at a didancc fpics ;
With eager'flops each drive lor to gain,
The port of plea lure and not of pain.
“When now a spacious tavern firft receiv’d
The weary travellers, just tot Own arriv’d;
’1 he city Bean in his turn, now entertains,
And serves up dainties with unwearied pain?
Wliilft his glad guest luxuriantly does eat,
Rejoicing at the happy change of fate :
But fee the uncertainty of human things !
Well it is laid, thatplcafurcs have their flings-
A noted set of gamblers, pop comes in,
And to the wearied Cracker dot h begin ;
* Friend, will you draw near and take a hand
‘ We play ior calh, the bell tiling in the land.’
The flratiger did not know how to deny,
And therefore, with their requcil did comply
But alas ! Before he was seated long,
Not a penny-worth to him did belong.—
He loft bis money, horle, fcddle and all ;
And then to bis lricnd did loudly call ;
‘Mate’s this the eligible life you boalt ?
1 A life to ail happiuels ever loft!
1 Chen he it To—l will bid you farewell, )
* And live at rile in my lonely cell,
4 Where contentment and plenty ever dwell.’’
