LISBON, May io.
\Ve have lately received the details of
anaftion between a Portuguefc veflel
and a French frigate in the Eatt-Indies.
The former named the Saint Antonio,
having failed from Baja, came up with
the French veflel, when an aftion com
menced, during which the latter laid by
to repair ; when, the adion being re
newed, an attempt was made to board
the Portuguese veflel, which {he evaded ;
but not being able to refill the fuperiori
tv of the enemy any longer, ltruck her
colours, after five hours fighting, having
nine killed, and eight wounded. The
French (hip carried 44. guns, and the
Portuguclc 22. The French, after
palling many encomiums upon the brav
ery of their opponents, gave them the
veflel, upon condition of their not bear
ing arms till regularly exchanged.

WINCHESTER, September 2.
It is with a degree of sorrow feidom
experienced by the editor hereof, that he
enters upon the recital of the following
melancholy event —A few days ago an
unhappy dispute took place at Bfch, be
tween a captain Randolph and Smother
gentleman, whole name we have not
heard ; that a challenge was lent by the
latter to the former, of which a captain
Thomas was the bearer ; that captain
R. refufed the challenge, and threw the
note on the ground, liguifytng at the
fame time, that he did not think his op
ponent upon an equality -with him.
The behaviour of captain R. inflated
captain Thomas, who alio dared him to
combat, which was refufed by the former
upon the fame fcorc. A day or two af
terwards, captain Thomas wasbealiing
in company that he had frightened feme
ot the continentals — This behavior drew
down the vengeance of Major Black
burn, who very unfortunately happened
to be present—his resentment new no
bounds—heaflailed C'apt. Thomas, and,
I Oh! that we could break off here, but’
aias! the sequel, mournful as it is, mull
be disclosed) with a dirk put a period to
his existence. The unhappy Major
.Blackburn is committed to priibn in
Martin Iburgh.

of money, which Mr. Deforrcft the owner

came to me, and I got a number out from
here, and sent to flop all the paifes, to prevent
if possible the escape of the villain or villains.
