It is with very great fatisfaflion we have to
obierve in this early stage of impending hollili
tu-s between Gr-at-Britain and Spain’, that if
the court of Madrid is duped by the artifices
threats, or promises of the Executive Directo
ry to declare war agaiuft this country, the peo
ple ol Spain have a good earnest of what they
are to expect from the rcfult.
/•cco dingto in’ ell igence received y-’fterday
from Ireland, we learn, that the Revade Lou

neutral vessels with Spamfh propertyon board,,
are taken by the Di.mo, Sea-Horse, and Cer
berus frigates (part of admiril Kingfmill’s
squadron) near Cape Finifterre, and lent foj-

The above fquadrpn has also taken L’lndem
nite French privateer of 14, guns and 70 men,
and retaken the Santa Cruz of 930 tons, a Por
tuguese illtp bound from the Brazils to Lis
bon, which had been pr-vioufly captured by
the French.
The above news had, however, such an ef

one per cent.

By the Cumberland, capt. Watson, who ar
rived at Durimouth on the 4th instant, from
Newfoundland, we learn that the French squad

fix ships of 74 guns each, brfides several fri
gates. They landed 1500 men at the Bay of
Bulls, and 2000 at Portugal Cove, and with
this force were marching to attack St John’s.
The detention of the Spamfh (hips is not t
