’ Sunday in the forenoon, a mulatto

lie was at church. Mr. De Peyefteron
his return, found a coal wrapped in a
piece of oiled linen cloth in his cellar—
part on the floor and part on a box—a
place was burnt of a small. extent, but
the fire had gone out. Had the fire
proceeded half an inch further, it would
have reached a quantity of paper and no
thing could have saved the house.—The
cellar had in it a large quantity of Givi.
The mulatto boy was afterwards seen by
one 01 the family to pass the house and
look into the cellar. The nurse calling
to him to flop, he ran off and could not
be overtaken.

We learn that Capt. Peterson, of the
Lhooner Franklin, in 34days from Su
rinam, has brought accounts of one
D::‘ h6O and lour frigates lying there,
and that a British 64 and sloop of war
were lying off the mouth of that harbour,
inconiequenceof which about 14 fail of
Americans which were all ready to fall,
would be embargoed next day after he
took his departure. We understand that
Cant. Peterlon, came out in the night
time, and puffed the men of war unper

Yefterdav this town exhibited f;> tre
mendous a feene as to threaten deitruc
tion to a great part of it. About
4 o’clock in the afternoon, a fire broke
out in a frame building on the weft fide
of Light-street, - occupied as a (hop by
doitor Goodwin. The flames immedi
ately caught Meflieurs Wilkinson and
Smith’s Cabinet-Manufadlory (another
frame building) on the l'outii fide, and
Mr. Hawkin’s two three-story brick
houses. On the north they communi
cated to that magnificent ft nurture, the
Baltimore Academy, and the Methodist
meeting-house. The fierce element had
now got to such a height, as to put it
cut of the power of the citizens to favc
the fix buildings on fire ; and therefore,
to prc\ent its spreading still further,
threw down the roof of the Rev. Mr.
Reed’s house, and demoiifhed fome back
buildings; by which means the flames
were got under.
Mr. Bryden’s Fountain-Inn, dlredly
opposite, was with difficulty preserved
by wetting the roof, and spreading wet
blankets by a gentleman traveller on a
filed adjoining the inn, which was on
fire feverai times previous to this expe
riment.
It is reported the fire originated with
fome boys, w-ho set fire to fomefhavings
in the back part of the house.
The lois is said to amount at lcaft to

Extract of a letterfrom John 1 . Noel. efq.
mayor of the city oj Savannah, to John
Edwards, efq. intendent oj this city.
“ Savannah, Dec. 12,1796.
“ Sir—l was favored with your very
kind and sympathizing letters of the
6tli and 7th inltant, and after communi
cating their contents to the city council,
am authorized by them to aflbre you,
that we entertain a verv high sense of
your pc'tonal feelings and exertions in
ourbehalf, and that the benevolent and
charitable conduft of your fellovv-citi
zfens at large, entitles them to eur mod
exalted, gratitude.
u Such consolation as your friendly
letters communicated, would have ope
rated powerfully and immediately to
v/ards relieving ourdiftrelles; but alas,
my good fir, the calamity of which you
was informed was succeeded, on the
night of the 6th instant, by one equally
distressing, though not lo cxtenfivc.
“ The flames broke out from a liable
in a compaft part of the city, about nine
o’clock atmight, and confirmed upwards
of thirty houl'es before their career could
be flopped, although great management
and exertion were ufed* Not only the
families which usually occupied those
houfes, but many which had taken refuge
with their friends were again deprived
of ihelter, and the little they had saved
was entirely destroyed by the horrid re
petition.
“ Pardon my obtruding a correfpon
dcnce upon a fubjefl of this gloomy na
ture; my confidence in your goodness
indicated by your firil letter, rnuft be
my pology.”

AUGUSTA, December 17.
On Saturday night last, about 9 o’-
clock, an attempt was made to fire the
town, by lodging coals of fire wrapped
up in a cotton rag, and deposited in a
heap of mavings in the cellar of Mr.
Crclwell’s brick hoafe, in Brcnd-ftrect;
the smoke was observed by Mrs. Crcf
well, an<l a person observed from the op
pofi.c fide of the street to run irorn that
house—a quick alarm being given, Capt.
Watkins, and fionie gentlemen of the in
fantry company, made a diligent search,
and fucccedcd so far in theirpurfuit that
Columbian iH mount,
the was fired on—a rope across a
lot in which tne incendiary was, being
unoblcrved by the pursuers, suddenly
checked their career, and over turned
every man engaged in the pursuit—to
,tuis unfortunate accident mav be attri
buted the el cape, (at this time) of this
daring villain. A fellow who calls him
lelf a Spaniard, was apprehended on
Sunday morning by Mr. Liverman,
who jias exerted himfclf in a manner rimt
defervcj tiie attention of Ins fellow citi
zens, to bring to just ice the perpetrators
of this horrid attempt. He is, we are
informed, fentunder a guarj for Savan

Yesterday arrived the Schooner Lnr
kcr, Capt. Lightburn, in 5 days from
New- .vidence—We learn by laid vef
fcl, that an armed Schooner had arrived
there from Bermuda, commifiioned to
cruise against the Spruiiards, and had
brought with her a number of blank
Commiiiions, in confbquence of which
feverai privateers were immediately fit
ted out, and in the councofafew days,
brought in a number of valuable prizes
con lifting’ of z ships, 1 brig, 3 fchoonerl
and a sloop, :fll of u hich Lad specie on
board to a large amount —the brio had
10,000 and: Bars- Two days previous to
Capt. l.ightburn’sdeparture, a brig had
arrived from London, in 42 days, and
brought intelligence of the pfofpedl of a
fpeetly and general peace, owing to which
rneft of the privateers were laid up, and
die above mentioned specie, deposited in
the Custom-House.
Yeftcrday morning between the lie
of 1 and 2, a fire broke out in the house
occupied, by Mr. James MUntoib and
Capt. K. Swarbreck.. Fortunately,
molt of each family were in the lower
itory, by which means they had just
time to make their escape into the street,
with no other cloathing than what they
had lain in. Mr. and Mrs. MUntofu,
their child and Miss Read, were sleep
ing in the upper story, and when at
length, they were awakened by the noise
below, they could lee no prolpett of ef
cape — uch volumes of smoke had filled
the house, that tney could not hnd the
flair case, add to this, they believed the
lower part of the house in flames.—Thus
si tuated, they mult have perilhed) but
for the exertions of Mr. R. Filher,
who ran up flairs, and at the risk. of
his ov/n life, refeued them from the
devouring flames.—Mr. MUntofli found
means to escape by jumping from an up
per window. Upon examination, it
appeared that the house mult have been
set on fire by fome wicked incendiary,
as the lire originated unJcr the lower
floor, iii two dill ufft places. This fire,
though it was prevented extending any
further than the one house, in the occu
pation of the above gentlemen, was to
them a moft dreadful event, as they did
not save a fingie article from the flames.
On the evening preceding, between
9 and 10 o’clock, a moft daring attenmt
was made to set fire to a itore under the
Bluff, occupied by Mr. E. Baldwin—
a bowl of a pipe containing fire, wrapped
in a parcel of oakum and other combulli
bles, was placed near the flore door.
Fortunately, it was early difeovered
and removed.
In the afternoon of yesterday, the
city was again alarmed by fire, which
was difeovered under the Neccllary, be
longing to the house occupied by Dr*
J. Love. The fire was found in a par
cel of straw tucked under the cill, and
from every circumftancc, it appears de
signedly set on fire.

mentioned articles, isextra&ed from a
