BEWARE OF HUMBUGS.
Mv attention having been ca led to an adver
tisement in your palter, over tbc signature ol
Jagger Treadwell .v Ferry, chaleoging all other
wheels, I now declare myself prepared to accept
tbe challenge upon all the grounds specified, nam
ing #SOO as the sum upon raci point.
Ist. I will bet #s'!o'nat no other wheel, patent
ed or not, Will give out as large a per centage of
power under a like head and volume of water.
ill. That no wheel can be more durable,
lid. Tnatno wheel can be more simple.
4th That none is cheaper,
fitli. That no wheel i« more st< ady.
bill That the Rich Wheel is wholly superior to
the Vandewater Wheel.
An I again. 'I here being those who are dis
posed to question the lac ihat the Rich Wheel
discharges but half i s measurement of apertures.
I will bet #1,900 that the discharge does not ex
ceed one ball the apertures on a well constructed
and adjusted Rich Whi 11, actual experiment hav
ing demonstrated that it discharges in leaii y
but 2-sth»of the apertures, so that a wheel rneas
uring“4Uo inches in its di-charge aperiurcs.” rea
ly vents less than 2IU I The depth of the water
in the tail race, is no criterion for estimating the
quantity discharged, unless reference is had to
the speed with which it runs off. For example:
irom the ordinary Mutter wheel under 10 feet head
he water runs off at the rate of 18 to 29 leet per
second. From my wheel, under same head it runs
off at less than 4 of this speed, and Irom this conse
quence slowness ol motion, a thou- and gallons per
min Irom ray Wheel, would create asuiucb denth
in the tail race as lour thousand from the Mutter
wheel from which th ■ water runs with qu .druple
rapidity.
Bear in mind, tin refore.that unless speed is re
sided, the depth in the mil race is no er terion
whatever of quantity, mid that ihe only true esti
mate is to aseertuiii what aperture, a'ongs ido,th
under the same head and pressure with he wheel
will exaust a given number o' gallons of rn'i r in
tbe same space of time. RMJHEN RICH.
I*. 8 1 laving just learned that .he Agents of
the Vandewater Wheel represent that my Wheel
discharges even more than its a entires ; now to
test their -incerity, 1 will bet them, or any other
person who may qua lion that the discharge of
in> wheel is more than hall its apertures, as fol
lows :
Ist #5,090 to #2,090, that it does not (as t ie
Vamiuwatcr J gents claim) vent more than its ap

2d. j 2,000, that it does not d sebtrge equal to
its apertures.
.Id. #3,1(19 to #!,SCO, that it don’t discharge
two-thirds its apertures.
4th. #I,OOO, that the discharge is not one-hull
tbe apertures.
sth.#l,o(‘o, tb it the discharge is but four-tenths
the apertures
An I then I will present the acceptor ot the
above bets, #599, on his di-p .siting tl c money to
cover them, with # 1,010 to cover expenses of tri
al which the winner willcc entitled to, in one of
the Augusta Hanks, where I will as promptly
make ac rresponding deposit and agnin, 1 will bet
any sum that the Vandewater Wheel, with same
apertures as mine, discharges one third more wa

INTERESTING TO COTTON PLAN
TICKS.
Sit. FARKII GUST’S Patent Cotton
• Seed CLEANING MACHINE, construct
ed without Saws or Ribs.
Tbe Inventor of this .Machine now has the p'.ea
sure of nnawrring the numerous inquiries from
Cotton Planter*, respecting the performances and
results of this Gin. ft has been fully tested by
cieaning the o.itire crop of a large planter near
Columbia, 8. C., (a certificate from whom is ap
peuded,) enhancing t.ie value of the Cotton otic
ana a half to two cents p r lb. over that cie 'iied
j by ativ Saw Gio. This advanced price more than
! pays for a Machine in one year's average crop,
the cist of it beiug onli #230. It turn.*out equal
ly as much or more, than any Saw Gin ; is more
simple and durable, perfectly safe to the ginner,
inasmuch as he cannot cut himself; and the great
danger of fire, by fiictiou, in - thei Machines, is
entirely obviated.
Arrangement- are completed, to build these
Machines in Augusta, for toe Stale of Georgia;
and Cotton Planters desiring them, are respect
fully requested so send their orders to the subscri
ber. One of the Gins may be seen in operation
at my Steam Mill. W. H. GOODRICH.

Copy of a ceitificate from Col. Wade Hamp
ton, dated at Millwood, Nov. 4,13'0.
Mr. Parkhnrst has been, for some weeks, at my
plantation, adapting his Cotton Gin, originally in
tended lor Long Cotton, to short staple. The ax
peiiment has neen entirely successful. He lias
one Gin in operation, which will prepare four
hales of three hundred and fifty pounds each, per
day, and the quality of the cotton is far better
Ilian 1 hive ever seen. By this pr cess ol cl .aning
cotton, thes'aple is uninjured, wl ile all the motes
and fahe seeds are almost entirely separated from
the lint. I deem this discovery of vast impor
tar.ee tn the country, and I earnestly hope that
Mr. Parkhnrst may be re warded for it.
