Indian sttyle, camping wit at night, mtm;r

scattered heieaod there in this vast wildfn-
nesi. The weather was serene, and w •
encountered but one rainy night and hn
thunder storm, and I round sleeping
in a tent a very sweet and healthy repose
It was now upwards of three weeks since
I had left St. Louis and taken to travel
ling on horseback, and it agreed with mp
, admirably.
On arriving at Fort GH>*on, wo fotind
s that a mounted'bodv of rangers, nearly a
’ hundred, had set off two days before to
Malta a wide lour to the west and south,
t ough the wild hunting countries; by trey
protecting tbo friendly Indians, who
) gone to the buffalos hunting, and to
Overawe the Hawnees, who are the wan
dering Arabs of the west, nnd continually
oo the maraud. We datermiri-jd to pro-
wed o i the track of this party, escorted
by a dozen or fourteen liorsmon (that we
(night have nothing to apprehend from
any straggling party of Pawnees,) and
> wl th thnto or four Indians as guides and
interpreters, including,a captive Pawneo
woman, A couple oi Creek Indians wore
despatched by the commander of'the fort
to overtake the parly of rangers, and order
[ them to await our coming op with them.
S Wo were now to travel in a still simpler
' and rcsuher style, taking ns little baggage
as possmle, and depending on our hunting
for Mpplies; but were to go through a
country abounding with game. . The finest
sport we had hitherto had, was an inciden
tal wolf bunt as we were traversing a prai-
1 tie; tyhich was very animated and pictur
esque. I felt now completely launched in
I n saVage life, and extremely excited and
interested bv this wild country, and peo
ple bv which 1 was surrounded. Our
raugbrs were export hunters, being mostly
from Illinois, Tennessee, &c.
We overtook the exploring party of
mounted raiigers in the course of three
days, oo tiro banks of the Arkansas; ami
the whole troup crossed that river on the
X3lli October, some on rafts, some ford
ing. Our own immediate party had n
couple of half breed Indians us servants,
( who understood tho Indian customs.
They constroctod a kind of boat or rail
;■! out of u buffuloo skin, on which Mr. E.
! and myself erbssod the river. And its brail-
j- cites, at several times, op tho lop of about
t) a hundred weight of baggage; an odd
mode of crossing a river a quarter of a
f mile wide.
VVe now led a ti ne hunting life, sleoping
in the open nir und living upon the pro
duce of the chase for we were three hun
dred miles beyond lium.ru habitation, and
part of the time in a country hitherto unex
plored.
Wo got to the region of buifoloes and
wild horses: killed some of tho former, and
, caught some of the latter. VVe were,
moreover, on the hunting grounds of tho
i Puwnees, the terror of that frontier; n
race who scour the prairies on fleet
horses, and are like the Tartars or roviug
Arabs.
VVe had to set guards round our camp,
l nnd tie up our borses for fear of surprise;
[ but though we had an occasional alarm,
I wo passed through the country without
! seeing n single Pawnee, i brought off,
however, tho longuo of a buffuloe, of my
own shooting, ns u trophy of my hunting,
nnd am determined to rnst my renown as
a hunter, upon that exploit, nnd never to
descend to smaller game. VVe retornod
to Foil Gibson, uftcr u campaign of about
thirty days, well seasoned by hunter’s fare
Olid hunter’s life.
From Fort Gibson, I was about five
days descending the Arkansas tn tho Mis
sissippi, in a steamboat, a distance of seve
ral hundred miles; 1 then continued down
ihn latter river to New Orleans, where I
passed some days very pleasantly.
New Origans in one of the most molly
dnd nniusing places in the United States;
a mixture of Aniciicn and Europe. The
French part of tne city is a counterpart of
some French provincial town; and the

t From Ne.v Orleans I set oil, on the
fe mail, stage through Alabama, Georgia,
Sooth and North Carolina, nnd Virginia to
” Washington, a long nnd rattier a dreary
. journey travelling frequently day and
night, -and much u! tho rode through pino
foiests in the witilci' season.
At Columbia, the cnpitl of South Caro
lina, I passed a day most cordially with
our friend P. I diued also with G. ll.t
whom I nad known in New York, when
a young man, and who it a perfect gentle
man, though somewhat » hotspur in poli
tics It is reallv lamentable to see so fine
B 80t ql'eallant fellows, as the leading Nul-
lifiors are. so sadly in tho wrong. I hoy
havo iusl causa of complaint, and have
been Itaf'llv dealt svitl»4 but they nro put-
tin* themselves completely in tho wrong,
bV°tke mode they take to redress them
selves. As a committee of Cangrt.s is
now occupied in the formation of a hill for
the reduction of ibe tariff, I hope that such
a bill mav be devised and carried, as jmay
satisfy the moderate part of tiio Nulhfiars.
But I grieve to see so many elomeuts o(
national prejudice, hostility, and selfish
ness, stirring and fostering, with activity
and acrimony. '
i I intended slopping hut a few days at
Washington, anil then proceeding to New
York but I doubt now whether I shall
„ot linger for sow* time. I am very pleas-
antlv situated: I have a sung, cheery co-

I can be as lonely and iodopeudeot as I

some curiosity to discover how such source* of
information at VVashiiigtoii should be hectfliarly
at Ilia control. Be this as ii may; Mr. Curry
does not pretend to •stabliih hi* charge—and
after the puldic denials of it which called forth
his letter; Wjb take it for granted, that no at
tempt to suhsiutitiute, i* a pructical withdrawal
of tlie charge; Or at least, evidence conbloaive
thut lie camfot sustain it; should ho try.
We notice tin, matter again, for two reason!
first, to shew upon what unsobstantial grounds
our contemporary, ihe Federal Union, cue,
when it suits its purposes, email the public char
acter; with intbnt to do,trov it, of those whd
are politically opposed lo it;' and to ahew ho#
very cautiously charges emanating from that
source, should be received by the public. And,
secondly, we allude to it; because we have ibo
best grounds for bblioveing, diet this Hisnult
upon tho reputation of the Representative* of
our State, has really emanated frohi another
source', from one, the peculiarity of whose sit
uation nt least, should have prevented himlhtn
tho circulation of such chargee, unleu upon un-
duuhted evidence, no matter how much it might
gr»<ify his political hostility; or teke front h»
own Indian policy (lie mortification of inch p.
failure. We me not at nil disposed to (hake cov
ert attacks t p >n any one, mid least Ofttjlupon this
occasion. VVe state men in|phiin terms, that we
have what wa deem satisfactory evidence Tot
the belief, that tho original le tter wit not Writ
