Edt. Albany Argus.
The country known nt Colombia it of vety
consitlerahle extent, extending Iron* 12 deg.
north to 7 south, and from the Allantic to the
Pacific ocean. It is formed vf Venezuela on the
Atlantic, New Grenada in the centre, and Qui
to (or the Ecuador) on the Pacific. Before the
revolution, each ul these divisions liad n diflfer-
ent designation—Vouezulca was called a cap-
ttmitygcn-inl, New Grenada a viceroyaliy,
aud Quito a presidency. There does not teens
in ha>o existed any necessity for this diversity,
uml it originated, I apprehend, altogether in the
caprice of the Spanish monarch.
The republic of Colombia wet finally organ
ized in 1821 ami principally the grorh j>f Cto. ’
Bolivar and Mr, Jiw. fda integrity of the l«-
pubjic was maintained uutil 1829, when V*«a-
zuela seceded from the union, and dectarad
lietsell uidcuQudent. Quito followed the eg-
umpio, nud loft New Grenada alone, to cepre- •
tent tho. republic of Colombia, which the may
be said to do, as slio never approved the dtaeO-
lution of tho union, nn d Is styled in all official
nets, ii9 "Colombia, Slate of New Grenada.”—
1 hore is a prospect of n re-union, and ropasurerf

pm pose of realizing it, and as a majority m in
favor of it, I iliink it will ho effected, ihmtgh
under u different form, and may perhapa be a
simple couftdoiniion, at tlie United States wer*
before the revolution, oi it msy lie poli jcally
organized aa the Lniled Stales areal pros.'*
Each of thoBo three divisions h'az a oonstitu-
liou bused upon sound republican principles;
not aa republican though, aa a citizen oflhe Uni
ted Slnies would bo in favor of, hut appzreutly
well adapted to the condition of tho fcdtmtry,
und Ibe wants and wishes of the people. This
constitution of New Grenada it a labored tod
tyoll-digeated document anil contaiins many ek
cpllcnt pi ovisions. Some are, I think, ezeep-
tionnhle; hut tlfat may bo said of all cohitmf-
liaus—defects are. incident to all legiaiation—
llie works of God alone are perfect. All reli
gions urn indirectly tolerated by one of the ar
ticles. ThBt article is ratlior ambiguous; not in
! oousequonce of on overnight or of any political
chicanery. It was the wiah of a ma|ority of
the couvoniion to provide for a full and perfect
toleration; hot nt present it might not be **pe-
diqnt, und might Imvc offended aitd alarmed the
people and the clergy.. But what the convention
did. was doing much in a Country ao distinctly
CuthoUc, which had heenpohlicaf/jtzubsorviont
to the king of Spain, and ecclesiastically' to iW
Pope, for nearly 300 years, and whore the In
quisition once flourished. No Wan is molested
on account of his rpligious opinions, Perhapa
public worsltip might be objected to, but I bwvts
not pnrr.eived that the foreigners here are *0 de
voutly inclined as to consider tho inhibition very
oppressive.
With this very brief sketch of the political
condition of tho country, I will proceed to s»y
something about its moral nnd physical aspect.
Tho population here is mixod; there.are all col
ors, and all shades of colors, to be found;
is ilio pure while Castilian, the port) Indian, thd
pure African, and every huo that could, result
from nn pmnlpMnntlon of tho three. The poo-
pto are naturally very talented and amiable and
of fine msnneis; the Isdies particularly t and
they are besides very beautiful, tvbich I csnsBjf
will, opt ofinuding any of my own charming
cotuAry women—for when I choose 10 compli
ment a lady Itore, i tell her that I consider tier-
worthy of being a North American. I could
say nothing, as I conceive, more fluttering.—
Ti,ey are besides almost all patriots, of much de
cision and energy of character, land the auCcesa-
fol issue of the revolution, nnd of the subsequent
redemption of the country from the usurpation
of Ifrdsneta, may bo in no small degree, impu
ted to the women of C-otomhin. They never
despairtdof the Republic; Utey suffered every
. ; thing that tho ir,moi»bl«*s criieliy of the speii-
I innls could inflict: but they suffered with tbe
! firmness of flic Spartan matrons, and bsve eCrn
I cone to the scaffold unshrinking and 0|td*»ro*y(i
repeating to the last that magic nnd fislldwafl
; word, libertad, lihertarl! (liberty, liberty!) Sotly
. { are the women of Colombia. Gnod wives,
J etted mother* and gnod republicans,—if they
have vices, they arc redeemed by many virtues;
