MunDER «o Murder.—Wfien a mnu at
the East .wishes to ” disappear,” it has come
to bo the fashion for him to “ leave his lodg

Charlestown and ttrey not bo back until Tate
next evening.” The noxt morning his “ hat
and pocket book” (with no money in it) are
found on 0110 of tho bridges, (md tho story is
told in tho newspapers under the head of
“supposed murder.” Tho man’s creditors,
however, (and lie is sure to leave such rcla-'
tions to mourn for hint,) immediately set
themselves to inquire which way lie .went af

Approach of Death described dy a
Sailor.—The quaint but expressive Ian-
of sailors is well represented by Smol-
. in tlie sea scenes of itis novels. ‘Thus in
RodeHck Random, when a pcstilonco pre
vailed on board tire Thunder man-of-war, a
sailor came to the surgeon's mate, n Welch
man, to gel a prescription for a brother suilor.
“ Is ho tend or alive J” asked tho Welch
man.
’*• Dead !’’ replied Jack, “ if ho was dead,
he would havo no occasion for Doctor’s stulli
No, thank (JikI, death ha’rit us yet boarded
him, but they hayo been yard arm and yard
arm these three glasses.’’
“ Are Itis eyes open ?” continued tho mate.
“ His starboard eye,” said tlie sailor, “ is
open but fast jammed in his head ; and the
halyards of his under jaw have given way.”

My father was tho first in vontor of thrashing

and at the shortest notice! so look out,” He
thus describes the New.-England sausage find
scrubbing brush machine: “ Into tho centre
of this.raacbinc,’’ I10 says, “ you drive a hog;
sot the screws, n going, and it will prodocc
ready-made sausages from ono end, and patent
scrubbing brushes from tito other.”
II. L- Buiwcr relates, in his “Franco,” that
in 1810, a notary’s clerk killed himself, leav

that having duly calculated and considered,
lie did not think it possible for him to be so
great a man ns Napoleon—-therefore ho put

The Red River Countrv. Wo nro
gratified to learn, that tho late sale of public
lands, tit Washington, in the Red River Lund
District, wus Wofl attended, npd produced a
much largor sum than any former one in tho
Territory. Between $80,000 and $00,000
were received during the Bales, und it wns
expected that more than $40,000 more would
bo paid in, on entries ut private sale, within
tho fifst Week or two after the conclusion of
ilia public solo. Thera wits considerable
competition among tho purchasers—.some
lands selling ns high as $12 or $13 per acre,
and many at. $3 $5, $6, $8, &c. All tho
fractious bordering on Red river were eagerly
sought nftcr, and brought high prices.
The high prices which tho Red river lands
havb brought, und tho great demand for them
may bo set down to the credit oftho fluttering
prospect we now have of a Speedy removal
of the Raft. But for that; it is not likely that
many of the lands recently sold would have
commanded Government price, und more titan
half probably Would not havo found purcha
sers ut any price. Capitalists nro crowding
to that section of country in great numbers,
and, in n few years, it will no donbt be filled
with a dense and wealthy population.
Tire land sales closed on last Saturday.—
This 1ms been the all-engrossing topic in ibis
section of country, for the last three months.
Nearly all the Jnnd within fifteen or twenty
miles Of tho river, has been disposed of, aDd
has usually brought n higher price than we -
have over known paid in any part of the Uni
ted States, since the credit system was abol
ished. Tho amoantof money received at tho
Land Office in this place, is probably nmre
than half n million of dollars. This is nn
undoubted proof of the fertility and produc
tiveness of our soil.

Eshoraxts to Texas—Thera are seven
ty-six persons now on board tho Steamboat
Convoy,’ lying in this port,- who came down
ns deck passengers, that Ore on their way to
Texas, with the intention of settling in that
country. Most of them are hardy aud robust
in their looks, but wo saw some among their
number who appear to be running before the
fever uud ague, nnd not so for before it either,
but that they havo a grapple with it how and
then. Tlie country to which they are fleeing
we nro inclined to think, is exactly the place
where they will got cornered. Wo havo
heard it said, that even chickens and Turkics
in that country havo touches of the ague; and
at certain seasons of the year, these gallant
and stately birds may be seen stalking around
thoir domicils in a perfect state of nakedness,
their feathers having been shaken entirely oft”.
This of course, is hearsay—but wo have not a
friend in Alabama, that wo would connscl to
leave a comfortable abode here, to mitke trial
of either the happiness or the ills of that New
World. Bnt still wo would give a “ Lod
Speed” to those who cannot restrtun their
desire to make tho adventure.
