The Institution is supplied with a Harp, and

Miss Hotchkiss, who has not, heretofore,
been connected with tlie Institution, conics to
us highly recommended, as a teacher of rare
qualifications. Among other testimonials tlie
following letter from Prof. Newman, of Union
•'oliege, New York, is tin ample guarantee for
her ability and efficiency :
Union Collkgk, Dee. 2U, 1855.
Dear Sir :—ln reply to your inquiry, 1
would say, Miss Hotchkiss, l know to be emi
nently qualified for teaching. Her scolarshin
is general ami very thorough, She is enter
prising and ambitious—loves to teach, and on
the whole, is the host qualified for it of any
lady 1 ever instructed. I speak thus confi
dently, because she was a pupil of mine sonic j
lour or five years. Truly yours,
JOHN NEWMAN.
Upon thcgeneralprinciple that nothing tends
more to impair and destroy the intellect, than
superficial habits of study, no young lady, in
this Institution will he permitted to take up
studies beyond the grasp of her mind, or to ad
vance from a lower to a higher class until ~lkh
as thoroughly mastered all that precedes.—
The mind that has not comprehended common
arithmetic and English Grammar, is hut poor
ly qualified to grapple with the intricacies of
the higher mathematics, or the subtleties of
metaphysics.
We invite patronage, and we intend to de
serve it; hut we do not promise to make schol
ars in a day. While modern science lias al
most annihilated time and space, the mind
retains only its original qualities and capabil
ities. The Intellect,* in its onward progress,
h still dependent upon the principles of asso
ciation, the powers of judgement and memory,
heal advancement in knowledge now, as it has
ever been, is slow. janl.
