Jion.and necessary to the maintenance of the
Bon of the States, ami as the “best guuvan
(of common justice,” and a final and con
uive settlement of the subject of slavery.”
ffe consider the maintenance of the existing
lfs upon the subject of slavery sacredly
#0(1 by the American party, and necessary
tie preservation of tlie Union, and thereby
tte paramount question,” to which all others
: y before the country should yield, and upon
fell in the South there should be no division
sentiment, either ns to tlie opinion or the
lethod of its expression.
And while wo abate none of our hostility to
of foreign influence in the ad
iustrfttion of the government of our country,
iJ while we as much as ever deprecate that,
jlicy which admits those owing and acknow
dging civil allegiance to other powers, to the
lists ami confidence of official station, yet wo
nnsider this principle, though of vast import
ace, secondary to the issue upon the question of
tvery now presented to the American people.
The American party of the State of Georgia,
a the 20th of December, 1855, re-affirmed
esc doctrines, and insisted that they bc.cn
oised by the National American Convention,
ml that the candidates selected by it be
edged to their adoption, as fully appears, by
e following resolutions, by it at that time
[Wished, to-wit:
teolrod, The. Territories of the. t'nitod Stales we re
id as the common property of all the .-Mate* as co
ral sovereignties, and as such open to sottlcnoont l>y

mtorial Legislature, or the people of the Territories
bile a Territory, to exclude from nett lenient in ti>
niton an v portion of the citizens of this republic with
sir property, legally held in the States, trout which
if emigrate. ,
’ Tile agitation of the subject of slavery should cease,
frights of the South are plain, palpable, well oouueu,
and understood, and we believe they should not longer
treated as open questions; w o trill maintain our guai-
M constittutional rights, and our right, ot propel t v
flares. Georgia has solemnly declared wllat she will
jardl as future grievances on this subject, Hud “ hat
[remedy will be when these grievances ahull be lil
ted. We will stand by the ’‘Georgia Platlorm. \te
Ike the eontinons agitation oftliis subject is miulo by
tonal politicians for personal and party promotion,
lit hurtful to the South, the institution ot slavery,
ithe permanency of tho Union.
S, We instruct our delegates to the National Uonven
tto insist upon the adoption of the foregoing prmcl
sii spirit and sutistance, before going into a nonu
lien; and that the nominees lie pledged to carry out
fame in good faith, as in the administration ot Ilia
Moment and the appointments to office.
ffe consider the Convention of the American
irty, at Philadelphia, in February, 1 *><->, has
wed itself regardless <>f the preservation ot
tUnion:— ,
First, by repudiating the 12th Resolution ol
if American Platform ol 1855.
Secondly, by condemning and denouncing the
tpeal of the law known tvs the Missouri Com
romise, and thereby attempting to re-open
ktquestion of Congressional interference with
ht subject of slavery in the Territories.
And thirdly, by disregarding the action ot tlio
invention of the American party of the state
f Georgia, and in contemptuously spurning
tom that body any consideration of their
fishes; and by these acts has severed the
tik of unity which bound us, and rejected the
*rms of our alliance.
Although we have undiminished confidence
11 the patriotism, ability, and. integrity ol
‘liu.uid Fillmobk, wc consider it uuvrrtc and
for the South to run him for the Prc
'idency in the present contest, for ‘\ v gtj in ß
urn the electoral vote of two or three Southern
States, we might throw the election into the
‘louse of Representatives, where tho same
power which elected h llhick Republican
speaker, would insure the election oi a black
‘‘(publican President, a result alike destruc
’i'tof the Union and the constitutional gov
foiuent bequeathed by our ancestors.
Wo consider that the Democratic party, rc
'<%, at Ciuciuuati, in Convention assembled,
‘<% fairly, and honestly placed ltselt in
buttle array, and tendered this “ paramount
-uc’ to our enemies and to the world. Vncl
11 view of these facts, and because ot the be
°to mentioned considerations, we feel it om
y, as Southern men, to support its nominees
id on U m i UUn with it conquer or with it
therefore recommend to our iellow-citi
y the election of Jawm Buchanan and
jn C. Bkkckv.nrumvi; as President and ‘ we
’esident of the United States.
