I .AjUMfiMT CITY CIRCULATION.
I give up a large space to-day to the
I j S) at the sacrifice of our usual variety,
I not of any important news.
r ibese excursions are not of frequent occur
■ ”, and our readers will probably take as
r cb pleasure as ourselves in reading of so
■ enjoyment. “UighPri-
evidently writes from the very deep of
a place we occasionally like to hear
■ju in this practical age, when men are rap.
|v forgetting that enjoyment is no small part
Iman’s duty. t
I jnvite attention to the advertisement of
I. Riddle, Daguerrean Artist, in to-day’s
lane.
I ♦ —
I ]jie Mobile News states that John Forsyth,
■ i( , of the Mobile Daily Register, lias been
■ pouted to and has accepted the post of Min
■ . (er to Mexico, vice Gen. Gadsden removed.
I T |, e News from California, in to-days issue
lg er s essentially from that reported by tho I
I,digraph on yesterday. We presume the 1
B resent version to be the true one.
The Kansas Convention.
I This hopeful body closed its session at Bus- j
■fal o on the 10th. Resolutions were adopted
Ijeaouncing the Federal Government, as an up-
Ijoldcr aud abetter of “outrages” in Kansas. -
I)collection was taken up, and a national cen-
Ipl committee appointed. Gerritt Smith sul-
I bribed $1,500 per mouth “during the war”
l : ,nJ handed over a check for the first instal
lment.
I ( )ur latest news from tLe Herbert trial in I
Bliashington, is that the case had gone to the
■jury under a charge highly favorable to tho
■prisoner: and that the Jury were unable to |
Bsgiee, seven being lor acquittal, and five for
■conviction. The Court had been adjourned to
Monday morning.
I Death of Hon. Alfred Cuthbert.
I The remains of this gentleman were brought
■toour city on Friday the 11th inst., and after
■funeral services were performed at the Church I
■of the Atonement, they were interred in the
■Sand Hills Cemetery. The funeral rites were
■attended by a number of his relatives and
■friends in this community.
I This gentleman died at his residence in
■Jasper county, on Wednesday night last, 9th
■instant, at the mature age of seventy-four,
flge had been for a long time in impaired
health, and the immediate cause of his death
was ossification of the heart.
He was for many years a leading and distin
guished politician in Georgia aud occupied a
seat in the United States Senate from March,
1837, to March, 1843. Since his retirement
from that high position, he has participated
but little in the active politics of the country.
Thus has passed away another one of tho co
temporaries of Berrien and Troup, solemnly
reminding us that high intellect, honorable po
sition, and the esteem of our fellow-men, form
noimmunity to the common late of humanity.

Addressed to the Columbus Guards.
BY MBS. C. A. I.ESTARJF.TTE.
Hark to the “ reveille”! it calls the gallant “Guards” to
arms,
But not to quell on battle field a hostile foe's alarms ;
Tis fairy forms and lovelit eyes the soldiers haste to
greet,
Tin beauty's proffered prize, and pay their homage at
her feet.
There native charms and mental worth, with plaudits
shall enwreathe
fheir name aud fame with laurels bright on which no
blight can breathe,
There maidens rich in loveliness, combined with graces
rare,
Await with bright, impatient glance, to smile a welcome
there.
Che noble leader of the band, his proud and gallant step,
And martial bearing give a pledge (and well has it been
kept,)
Fair Georgia’s honor he'll maintain, untarnished bright
and pure,
If life or gold can keep 11m “gem’’ unsullied and secure.
They meet their foes in friendly strife neutli tlie iree
light of heaven,
Iho’ linked in brotherhood, yet now, no courtesy is
given;
For soft imploring looks do speak the wish their bosoms
swell,
Tlio answer to their strong appeal, each musket-shot
must tell.
Around that flag of stale aud stripes, brave liearts a
bulwark keep,
And to each rival shot they hurl, defiance loud and
deep;
For on them burn bright glancing beams, that tell the |
trust they feel,
to Inch muke each marksman’s heart vibrate and turn ;
bis nerves to steel.
ban one fair brow be shaded by doubt’s distrusting
band
to’ben our brave city’s gallant sons before the target ,
stand 1
First place they claim ill ladies’ heart, as first they claim ;
the prize,
Tho’ dear the trophies, deaUKB still ure lovely woman s |
eye*!
