THE BRITISH PERIODICALS.
AND
THU t'WHMHR’S GftTIDU.
Great reduction in the prfco of the latter publirattou.
1,. Scott A Cos., New York, continue to publish the fob
■ lowing leading British Periodicals, viz:
THE LONDON QUARTERLY (Conservative).
THE KDINUBUKGH REVIEW (Whig).
THE NORTH BRITISH REVIEW (Free Church)
THE WESTMINSTER REVIEW (Liberal).
BLACKWOOD'S EDINBURGH MAGAZINE (Tory).
r | tilK great aud important events—Religious, Political
J. and Military—now agitating the nations of the OIJ
Morld, glYo to these Publications an interest amt value
•hey never before possessed. They occupy a middle
ground between the hastily written news items, elude
speculations, and flying rumors of the newspaper, und
the ponderous Tome of tbe historian, w ritten long after
the liviug interest iu tlie facts he records shall huve
passed away. The progress of tile Mar in tlie East occu
pies a large spate in their pages. Every movement Is
closely criticised, whether of friend or of foe, aud all
short-comings fearlessly pointed out. Tho letters frou.
tlie Crimea and troui the Indite in Blackwood's Magazine,
from two of It- most pupulur contributors, give a moiu
i intelligible and reliable account of tlie movements ot the
Fre'Jt belligerents that can elsewhere bo found.
Those Periodicals ably represent the three greai politl
i |'l patties of Great Britain—Whig, Tory, and Kmlicsl,—
but polities forms only one feature of llieir character.-
As Organs ot the most profound writers on bclence, Lite
rature, Morality, end Religion, they stand, us they ever
have stood, unrivalled in the world of letters, being con
sidered indispensable to tlie scholar and thu professional
loan, w hile to the Intelligent reader of every elass they
furnish u more correct and satisfactory record of the cm
rent literature of the day, throughout the world, that,
can bo ixsuibly obtained from any other source.
Early Copies.
The receipt el Adtvner SlirrU from the British publish
ers gives additional value to these ltcpriuts, especially
during the present exciting state of European attaiis, in
asmuch as they esn now be placed in the baud* of sub
