The Devil's Chair.
A letter from Manchester, N. H., in the
Boston Post, says that at the Amoskeag Falls
the Devil’s Chair is visible, in consequence of
the low water in the Merrimac, which has not
been the case for many years:
“ The chair is a specimen of river bottom
architectecture, wrought into the solid rock
which foyms the bed of this river. No mathe
matical measurement could calculate this fur
niture more accurately, nor could any chisel
cut it more smoothly than the water has
“ The tradition connected with this chair
is that the devil used to frequent these parts,
and made that particular place his seat, from
whence he used to amuse himself by torineut
the Indians with such diablerie as stopping the
salmon, shad and eels that used to frequent •
these waters, driving thorn back down the
river, drinking up all the water of the river,
or dashing it all into spray at the falls, anii
casting it it into the air, and thus occasioning
the long rainy days.
“ Tiie y were rid of him at length on this
wise: Passaconaway was a giant among the i
Penicooks. He was more to them than Hia
watha to the Dacotahs. He was a sort of
Jupiter Motor among his tribe, and was pre
vailed upon by the prayers of all good Indians,
and driven by repeated injuries to remove this
evil spirit from his throne. He did it to the
eminent satisfaction of all time, and is -enti
tled to the thanks of the Amoskeag Water
Power Company ; for if he were now drying up
the water, it would cause infinite mischief to !
all this machinery now running here.”
A number of boys discovered several hun
dred counterfeit gold dollars in the edge of the
water at the levee in St. Louis, afewdays ago.
On further search being made, a sack full of
counterfeit silver coin was found near the
same place.

T. W. LANE AND T. DE WOLF,
“EDITORS.
THE DAILY SUN being now established on a basis,

On the first of September next, we shall have in suc
cessful operation, liberal
TELEGRAPHIC ARRANGEMENTS,
which will enable us to lay before our readers the very
latest news, Foreign and Domestic, Commercial, Politi
cal and Miscellaneous. We might enlarge at great
length, upon our intentions; but preferring performance
to promises, we shall endeavor to have the “ SUN ” make
its own way exclusively upon such merit as it may be
found to possess.
c Before embarking in this project, whicli will be an ex
pensive and laborious one, we desire to have Eomo ggar

TEM, not only for our own, but our readers’ good. Ever
jy reader Is Interested iff tigs system; for it is the only

grill its interest and usefulness maintained.
The Weekly Son will be a large and handsome sheet,
printed on good paper, and containing a larger amount of
reading matter, adapted both to specific and general
wants and tastes, than any paper in Western Georgia, or
the State of Alabama. Advertisements will not be al
lowed to encroach upon our reading matter, except to a
very limited extent.
Subscription Price, $2.50 per annum, invariably in ad

tions—even scald-head—and In no possible case will it

ache, and if used twice a week by the young, regularly.
It will preserve the color, and keep the hair from falling,

Looansport, la., June, 1866.
Mkssbs. O. J. WOOD & CO.:
Gents—Yours of the 13th came duly to hand. En
closed, please find thirty-eight dollars, it being the
amount for Hair Restorative. 1 have sold it all. * *
If you choose, you may semi six dozen bottles Hair Res
torative; I think 1 ran sell it. It has worked miracle
in this place. 1 sold a man six $1 bottles, that was bald,
and it fetched new hair out all over his head.
Yours, respectfully, M. 11. GRIDLEI
0. It. It. Office, Vandalia, June 21,1854.
PROFESSOR WOOD —
Dear Sir—l take pleasure in bearing voluntary i.
timouy to the excellence of your Hair Restorative. Tlirt v
months ago my hair was very gray. It iB now a dark
brown, (the original color,) smooth und glossy. The only
application 1 have made to it, has been the Hair ltesto
rative prepared by you, and which, from the result in
my own case, 1 can most cordially recommend to othci -.
Respectfully, yours, KDW. WOLCOTT.
Vincennes, Ia„ June 21,1863.
PROF. O. J. \V(OD—
As you are about to manufacture and vend your re
cently discovered Hair Restorative, i will state, for
whomsoever it may concern, that 1 have used it, and
known others to use it—that 1 have, for several years,
been in the habit of using ether Hair Restoratives, and
that I find yours vastly superior to any other I know.
It entirely cleanses the head of dandruff, and with one
month's ]iro|>er use, will restore any person’s hair to the
original youthful color and texture, giving it a healthy
soft ami glossy appearance; and all this, without discol
oring the hands that apply it, or the dress on which ii
drops. I would, therefore, recommend its use to every
one desirous ot having a fine color and texture of hair.
Respectfully, yours, WILSON KING.
St. Loins, June 29,1853.
PROF. WOOD—
As you are about to prepare and vend your recently
discovered Hair Restorative, and as you request uiy opin
ion of it, 1 will state, that my hair w as, a few month:
ugo, very gray, and after using two bottles of your Hair
Restorative, it resumed its original color; and since it
application, all dandruff has disappeared from my head,
and I have been troubled with no disagreeable itcliing ol
the scalp. lam satisfied that those who use it will not
regret it, ns it gives the hair the appearance of having
been recently oiled. lam prepared, therefore, to recom
mend its use to all who are desirous of having a beautiful
head of hair. I am, sir, yours, etc.
11. L. STEWART.
PROF. WOOD—
Dear Sir—My lmir hud, for several years, been In -
coming prematurely gray, accompanied by a harshness
whicli tendered the constant application of oil necessary
in dressing it. When 1 commenced using your Hair Res
torative, about two months ugo, it was in that condition :
and having continued its use till within the last three
weeks, it has turned to its natural color, and assumed a
softness and lustre greatly to be preferred to those pro
duced by the application of oils or any other preparation
1 have ever used. I regard it as an indispensable article
for every lady’s toilet, whether to be used as a Hair Res
torative, or for the simple purpose of dressing or heauti
tying the liuir. You have permission to refer to me all
who entertain any doubt of its performing all that in
claimed for it. MRS. C. SYMONDS,
Cincinnati,Ohio, Feb. 10, 1854. 144 Third st.
Watertown. Muss., May 1,1854.
PROF. O. J. WOOD—
Allow me to attest the virtues and magic powers ul
your Hair Restorative. Three months since, being ex
ceediugly gray, 1 purchased, and soon commenced to use,
two bottles; and it soon began to tell, in restoring tin
silver locks to tlieir native color, and the hair, which was
before dry and harsh and falling oil', now became soft
and and it censed falling; the dandruff disap
peared, and the scalp lost all the disagreeable inching,
so annoying before, and now, 1 not only look, hut feel
young again. Respectfully, yours, etc.
