Mr. John Mitchel is still here, and this 1 morning we footed it to the highest peak of j the Chilhowie Mountain. Having been a year | and a half in the country, lie is familiar with its geography and productions, and 1 was in debted to him tor much valuable information. He traced for mo the outline of the rich valley of the Sweet Water, which lies east of the Cumberland Mountains, which rise in the dis ’ tance, and pointed to the Cove, some 20 miles away off among the srnokey mountains in the oppositite direction, where is situated his present home. He takes an easy interest in everything that is going on—dances, even to the Scliottish and polka, when they happen to be the order of the evening—and believes that Maoauley, for his abuse of what he calls the Celtio-race, in contra-distinction to tho Anglo- Saxon, is the most unmitigated rascal now alive. I believe that in his secret heart lie lias mis givings as to whether Democracy in Ireland were indeed a practicable idea; but he still believes that it is the paramount and eternal obligation of the Irish patriot to seek to break down the power of England over that country, and is assured that self-government, even in the form of a despotism, would be better than the interested tyranny exerted by the people and Parliament of England. Our company is saddened, to-night, by the extreme illness of Dr. Hdxey, from Colum bus, Ga. He arrived two days ago, very much enfeebled by long indisposition; his thirst was intense; he used the water immoderately ; the effects were much more violent than might have been anticipated, and he is sinking so rapidly there is no hope he can survive the night, He came here as his last chance tor life, and he bends to the disappointment with composure. Out of respect lur the feelings of his family, who are with him, the music and dancing has been suspended, and the place, at nine o’clock, is as noiseless as it will be at the same hour six months hence. Godard’s Second Balloon Ascension. Mons. Godard, says the Boston Bee of Tues day, made a second ascension yesterday after noon, with his mammoth balloon America,” from the Agricultural Grounds, Harrison ave nue. The ascension was successful, and ful tilled the promises of the daring tero riant. The voyagers were: Mons. and Mad. God ard, J. Howard Sleeper, assistant editor of the Portfolio, G. L. Coburn, clerk in the dry goods importing house of Otis, Cushman & Bancroft, Water street, -, five in all. Mr. was an unexpected passenger, as a person who was expected to ascend had not arrived. Balloons, like railroad cars, do not wait for passengers. Mons. Godard occupied a cross bar suspended by two ropes, some fif teen feet below the car of the balloou. While ascending the first half mile he gave a series of daring gymnastics; one of which was to hang head downwards, supported by a single foot upon the cross bar. He also suspended himself by one hand, and with the other dis played streamers, flags, &c. After these de monstrations of agility he climbed up to the car*of the balloon and joined the company, who in the meantime had been distributing documents, fans, displaying flags, making ob servations, &c. All this was intently watched by full ten thousand persons within the grounds, and probably as many more outside, here and there. The balloon having reached an altitude, we should judge, of about half a mile, continued southeasterly, in the direction over the har bor, at which time it commenced descending with some rapidity, the voyagers no doubt suggesting as speedy a landing as possible.— Going to sea in a balloon may be romantic, but at the approach of nightfall it is not safe. The balloon descended on Deer Island about 7J o’clock, having first struck upon the water, and then bounded upwards. The party landed safely, though the balloon, as we learn, was considerably damaged. Savannah. Items. The amount of sales at the Courthouse yes terday, was not very large, though the proper ty offered brought good prices. Eight shares of Central Railroad Stock brought sll2 per share; a negro man 35 years old $6lO. Three lots in Vernonburg brought, separately SBIO, SB4O, and SI,OOO. It will be seen, from the notice by the Presi dent, that the Merchants’ & Planters’ Bank has declared a divicend of four per cent, on the op perations of the last six months. This is the first dividend of this new bank, and promises well for the success of the institution.— Sa9. Republican. Fremont as a Financier. John C. Fremont appears in anew and not a very enviable light this morning. It ap pears that he was taxed in June last in this city on SIOO,OOO worth of property. The day before the tax books were closed he came for ward and swore he was hot worth anything.— The consequence was his taxes amounted to nothing. One week after this he went into Wall street and offered his notes for $60,000 to pay the interest then dueonCaliforniabonds then over due. But Wall street was too wide | awake for him, and the notes were not honor ed. An honorable position truly for a Presi dential candidate.—N. Y. Letter. SEED RYE.
