Oil hand Ist Sept. 1855 833 bales I, reived past week 050 1402 hipped past week Jll2 [eceived up to same time last year 1119 Rain or no Rain. The little parish of Vellowdale farmers had )U „. b een without a minister. One Rev. Mr. ure ly visited the village, and was asked to over Sunday and preach for them. The eople were pleased with his sermons and some ere anxious to have him stop. A meeting -ns called to know the mind of the parish. “I j oa’ t see any use’ll having a minister,” said I harp, ft rich old farmer ; “ a parson can’t am me anything; if we have any money to ; Jiare, we had better lay it out in something iat will bring a fair return.” The Sabbath Hying part of the people argued strongly | gainst him. “ Well,” answered Sharp, not losing to show himself convinced, “ I’ve Beard tell of ministers that could pray for rain, ■pd bring it; if we could hit one of that sort, mi go in for hiring him.” I Mr. Sharp was a man of consequence, and j I [ ie younger and less knowing of his neighbors 1 rerc quite taken with the idea. “That would I e a minister wortli having,” they thought.— I ind after much talk, it was agreed to-hire Mr ■ lurely on this condition —that ho would give a hem rain, or fair weather, when they wanted It: for their farms often suffered both from 1 everc drouth and heavy rains. Mr. Surely 9 ias immediately waited upon by a committee 1 f the parish, who soon came back bringing the I ninister with them. “ I will accept your 9 brms upon one condition,” said he, “ that I ou must agree upon what sort of weather you 1 runt.” This appeared reasonable, and mat -1 pi s were arranged for a year’s stay at Ycllow- I laic. Weeks passed on, bringing midsummer heats, ■or three weeks it had not rained, aud the Joung corn was beginning to curl with Brought. Now for the minister’s promise, f Oome,” said Sharp, with one or two others hose hilly farms were suffering, “ we need Bain, you remember your promise.” I “ Certainly,” answered the minister, “ call a meeting.” A meeting was called. “Now, ®v friends,” said the pastor, “ what is it you want ?” I “ Rain, rain,” shouted half a dozen voices. I “ Very well: when will you have it ?” I “This very night, all nightlong,” said Sharp, to which several assented. I “ No, no ; not to night,” cried Mr. Smith, B I’ve six or seven tons well made hay out; I Sou Id not have it wet for anything.” I -‘Sohave I,” added Mr. Peck, “no rain to ■g*'t.” B” Will you take it to-morrow?” asked the Minister. But it would take all to morrow to get it in. So objections came up for the two dr three next days. I “ In four days then ?” said Mr. Surely. 1 •• Ves,” cried Sharp, “ all the hay will he li, and no more be cut till”— 1 “Stop, stop!” cried Mrs. Sharp, pulling Her husband smartly by the sleeve, “ that day have set to go to Snowhill. It rnus’nt rain ■ion.” I In short the meeting resulted in uo conclu aon at all for it was found quite impossible to ■gi-ee. |“ Until you make up your minds,” said pastor leaving, “ we must all trust to the lord.” i Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Peck got their liay in. hut the day the Sharps were to go to Snow all, it seemed to rain in good earnest. Sharp • s t his visit but his crops gained. I And so it happened once or twice again. 1 he year rolled by, aud the people could never j 11 agree upon what kind of whether they 1 anted. 9 \l |- - Surely, of course, had no occasion to j ilfii his part of the contract, aud the result I as that they began to open their eyes to the | lot that this world would be a strange place j its inhabitants should govern rain.
