It is impossible to render human nature perfect, but there is scarcely a fellow creature, however igno rant oi- debased, who is not capable of improvement, through the agency of the proper means. Crime in very mam cases amounts to disease, curable disease, while the irreat majority of criminals arc, to some extent at least, the victims of bad example. Several years aro, an iinpiirv was made into the cases of one hundred criminal children at Manchester, when it was ascertained that sixty were born of dishonest parents, thirty bad profligate parents, and only ten had parents who were honest and industrious. Thus, nine ty of the whole number were the victims of bad example. Lord Stanley recently observed, that “all inquiry was calculated to show, that in crime as in pauperism, there was a tendency to become heredi tary. Thus, he thought, that the pareftfs should be dealt with, in order to prevent the corrupting process in early life. This is especially the case in great cities. There arc hundreds of children at this moment in Philadelphia, who are absolutely edu cated for our penitentiaries, by their pa rents themselves. They do not seek such an end directly, and some of them would be horrified, if such a result should be pointed.out. And yet they permit them In be beggars, paupers and thieves, and often encourage them in the wav of evil doing. How, with smell beginnings, can we look for any but deplorable results? Mr. Clay, of Preston, England, some time since, analysed with great earnestness, the specific agencies then at work, iu cre ating juvenile criminality, and lie found that in thirty-five per cent, of the cases, the faults of the children lay at the door of the parents. In fifty per cent, the chief cause was habitual drunkenness, of ten accompanied by brutality, on the part of the father. Iu the remaining fifteen per cent, indifference and neglect were discovered. Thus, in three out of every four eases of juvenile delinquency that passed under his observation, the victims were misled and badly guided. They, in fact, were indirectly taught to become rogues. The power of early impressions and the force of knamvlk can scarcely be pictured in terms too strong. Children are imitative beings, and thus they follow in the footsteps of those immediately be fore and around them. Their natures are plastic, and their minds and heads are readily influenced and moulded. Look, for illustration, at the habit* of smoking, chewing, drinking and swearing, whieli prevail so fearfully among the young men of this country. Tho majority are addict ed to some oi these vile practices, ami not a few to all. It can scarcely Ik* other wise, with the parental examples before them. If is true, that in some cases, children become rebellious and dissolute, with the best examples before them. But these instances arc rare. i'arentai coun sel exorcises a powerful influence. The example, however, must not consist only in words, but acts; for the parent who advises w ithout practising, only illustrates the vice of hypocrisy. Pleanliness, tem perance, integrity and truth are among the great essentials. These, constantly and zealously inculcated in early life, and the effect can not but prove wholesome. The young cannot be expected to under stand the world a* well as those who have been pilgrims and wayfarers flu* half a century, and while due allowance should be made fin- their inexperience, the pa rental eye should be watchful and vigil ant, and the parental mind kindly and forbrniring, yet judicious and firm. Husser’s rail road signal, for the pre vention of accidents at draw-bridges, cross ings of highways, switches and curves— now oil exhibition at Boston—is entirely self-acting, not dependent upon the care lessness of a watchman or the irregularity of a timepiece. It signalizes only when all is right ; when there is danger ahead no signal can be given, and the engineer has to come to a full stop and ascertain the cause. The signal operates as follows : “At any desirable distance from the bridge, switch, or crossing, u cam is slightly projecting above the rail; or at the side of the rail ; every wheel of the train as it. passes over the cam. presses il down on an elliptic spring underneath, moving one end of the spring forward against a shoulder on the end of a rod reaching to the place of danger, which motion moves said rod an inch or two,- ringing a large bell at tin* bridge, switch or crossing, giving notice of the approach ing train ; at the same time, and by the same operation, another large bell is rung beside the passing train, assuring the en gineer and passengers in the train that notice ha boon given at the place of dan ger, and that all in right. “The appartns is so arranged that one bell cannot ring without the other.
