its running its ordinary eourse. On this 1 will staki

besides, uu this subject, 1 have good authority; that of
Prof. Watson, previously, quoted. He says, page 874:
“V’uu may a!arte the force of the eruptive lever, mid

but it should lie given and repeated sufficiently to keep

surface bathed, as thought advisable.
In oue case, ou the ship Duchess and Orleans, the tongue

Synopsis.
‘To aTuiil constant repetition, Mid condense the tivat
uisni as much o possible, 1 give under Ibis head general
direction*for all cuses. A* tile Negative Kleetric Fluid
will change the condition culled fever, or subdue aud
control ii under *ll circumstances, without regard to the

wheisvei or whenever it exists; yet it cannot be ex
pected to cuuirol alt organic or Jucul causes, which,
when such exist, must be removed ill order to effect a
permanent cure.
When such indications occur iuauy case, they should
bo appropriate menus, and these wohuld be given while

producing more general effect, besides no unnecessary

if the bowel* are costive, give a cathartic (see auxili
aries) with the ilrsl dose, or soon after, and should it
tall to operate in due time, repeat tho dose; if attended
witli diarrhoea, give something known to be good for
that complaint, though if caused by irritability, tlie
“Fluid’’ will soon relieve that condition; if severe local
puiu or iutlammatioH. apply some stimulating liniment,
a mustard plaster, a blister, fomentations of bit ter herbs,
or, perhaps, cloths wet in cold water, to tho part; if
violent pain iu the head, upply cold water, ice water,
if convenient, or some cooling application, and bathe
the feet iu hot water; if the fever is very high, skin
dry ami hot. with great suffering, sponge or bathe tlie
whole surface with water at an agreeable temperature;
“the saline wash,” vinegar and water or spirits and
water, either will afford great relief and aid the medi
cine in taking effect, after which there will ho no trou
ble ; If the patient has been reduced or is much prostra
ted, give tonics and stimulants, particularly in low
levers, iu absence of fever or when indicated; also,
during convalescence, when tlie patient lias become re
duced; if there Is nausea and vomiting, that must be
allayed before any medicine will remain on the stomach
to do any good; for this purpose I generally give some
gentle emetic to cleanse the stomach; warm water, if
given plentifully, will answer every purpose; when the
stomach has settled, give the “ Fluid” and a cathartic if
necessary; in short, treat all the prominent symptoms
as you would under any othercireumstauces, giving the
“ Fluid” a( the same time as directed, aud suoccss"will
crown your efforts; indeed, you cannot realize it till vou
have seen, and then you will ho astonished nt the ease
with which you can control all febrile excitement.
Auxiliaries.
Fat tb-s may feel at a loss to know what is meant by
cathartics, Ac., as physicians are usually particular
about what is used. 1 have found uo such necessity
when using the Fluid, and to la- fully understood by
all, I will inline a lew of the different articles of medi
cine 1 have referred to, viz:—
Tatliarltes.—Articles that purge or operate ou the
bowels, such as castor oil, salts, senna, any of the roots
or harks, mid many pills, antibiHous, Ac.; anything
known to he good for such purposes.
IlepaticM.—Anything known to act on the liver
particularly, portal circulation and secretions generally.
Any of tho article* depended on by the different schools
for this purpose, will answer when used in connection
witli the -Fluid” or while the system is under its in
fluonee. And one may choose calomel—another, blue
mass—the third, podopliyllin—the fourth, mandrake
root, and so ou; each tu ay take his choice and ho suc
cessful.
Tollies.—Articles that give tone or strength, such
as quinine, various balks, root* and bitter herbs. Hone
set or thorough wort is one of the best used in levers.
Astringents.—Fnclt as check the action of the
bowels. Laudanum and other preparat ions of opium are
used; also, many mixtures, not properly astringents,
which have the effect.
Stimulants.—Articles that raise or excite the
system. Capsicum (Cayenne |>opper) is one of the best;
ginger, spirits, hartshorn, Ac., the esseuees are ail more
or less Stimulating. Those are the only classes accessa
ry in treating fevers, though litany others are generally
