PROOFS J See what the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Missouri, says of Rhodes’ Fevei and Ague Cure, or An tidote to Malaria: St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 10, 1855. HAVING noticed the certificate of chemical analysis given by the celebrated chemist Dr. J. H. Chilton, of Now York city, in laver of Rhodes’ Fever and Ague Cure, that it contained neither quinine, Arsenic, Mer cury nor Stryohuine, and having received numerous ap plications for it, I was induced to send to Dr. Rhodes for tlie medicine. Since then I have disposed of a large quantity, mostly to residents of this city, who liuve Inva riably been cured by it, and to whom 1 can refer. I am, therefore, sathffitd in recommending it to be ail tliut the proprietor represents. EDWARD S. M IIEATON, Presd’t of Pharmaceutical Society of Missouri. 70 Bottles Perform 70 Cures. Constantine, Mich., Sept. 24th, 1855, James A. Rhodes, Esq.—Dear Sir:—l have just sent an order to Ames & lialliduy for another half gross of your Feverand Ague Cure. It has sold like “ llotCakes,” and I have only two bottles on hand. One reason it has sold, is because w hen 1 have heard of a case of Ague or Chill Fever, I have sent a bottle und told them to try it, and if it did not help them, they were not obliged to pay for it, and they were all satisfied. I had one ease of Chill Fever where it run four days, but the man came to see me on tho sixth day well satisfied. Truly yours, JOHN P. GLADDING. Only Caution. —In certain specified cases, pour tlie contents of one or more bottles of the Cure into shallow vessels, (dining plates,, and place them in sleeping rooms; for the vapor rising from tlie medicine, and also the air wafted across, or circulated over the dregs of it, after tho liquid is e\ aporatod. will counteract aud ■ estroy, to a dcgiee commensurate with its exp - sure, the miasmata or poison contained in tho apartment. This mode of exhibiting tlie Cure should likewise be rifoorted to when very young infauts are exposed to malarious situations. The bottles in which tiiis medicine is put up liavu the words, ‘‘Rhodes’ Fever and Ague Core” blown in the glass, and on the outside wrapper is tho name of tlio medicine, (the copyright of which is secured) and tlie signature of the proprietor. These precautions arc taken to prevent counterfeits and imitations. The reliance von its success is entirely upon its actual merits, wherever introduced and used. These will be considered sufficient. The Last Scene. BY WILLIAM L. VINCENT. On one of those autumnal days. Si sad, yet lovely still to view, Win n softly fall the duv-god's rays, And softer still the evening dew; 1 wakened from a glorious dream, M liioh o’er me came in gulden morn, To see that duy-god’n farewell gleam, Fall o’er a country rent and torn. I stood, it chacccj, upon a hill. Whence 1 could throw my gaze afar— But what 1 saw returned a thrill Might well the strongest spirit jai lor wide upon the plain below Were two opposing armies met, Whose crimson life-blood yet must flow Before the evening mm should set. As yet no battling could I view. For tvvixt those war-imid armies then Were knelt the last, remaining true, Whoso lips wefe upward movud in prayer— That prayer was for their country's good— Imploringly they raised ouch hand. And cried —“Oh, brethren shed no blond 1 Oh, heaven, preserve bur native lane!” But all in vain ! War's shout arose— The father ’gainst ids only son ; Tlie soil returned his father's blows— Tho battle was indeed begun ! And so all powerful was the shock. Itseemed that (lod from Iloavt n had hurled Upon the earth a mountain rook, That shook the universal world! And still, ns there they madly met. Tho fair earth trembled in ass right. While bloodily the sun did set Upon a bloodier scene of war. And leave behind adisninl night— A night Without a single star. At morn I saw the dead and dying, And round and o'er them, gleeful flying. A flock of birds bedim tlio air : For each was dark, though bright his crown, And when those ravens settled down, They dined upon the bodies there. A Cuban Love Incident. A Havana correspondent relate* the following piece of gossip, which, he cays, has been the chief topic of conversation for some days among his lady acquaintan ces : One of our wealthiest Creole planters is a widower, named A . He has resi ding with him a married son, whose Chris tian name begins with the letter M. — There was also in the widower’s family an English lady, of irreproaehible character, who filled the position of housekeeper. The widower, it appears, had become smitten with the charms of this lady, and made her an offer of marriage; which of course was not refused ! The son JI. ob taining a glimpse of his father’s Intention to marry his housekeeper, proposal to the lady to make a visit to one of his father’s estates for a week or two, which offer was gladly accepted, and arrangements were made for their departure on a subsequent day. The son M. then slily proceeded to procure the requisite passport for the lady housekeeper to leave the island, and on the appointed morning for the pretended trip to the country, accompanied by M., in tlie volante, the housekeeper found her self, much to her surprise, driven to the wharf. Here M., leaving the carriage, politely handed the lady out, gave her the passport and said : “Madam, your passage is paid to England in that packet,” point ing to the English steamer. The lady objected to go on board, referring to the terms of her engagement for a scries of years, and to the amount of wages due her. “I have provided for that madam,” replies M., handing her a purse of gold, Which from its size and weight, fully as sured the lady that it contained a sufficient sum to defray her just demands. She stepped into a boat, M. still accompanying her, and they were rowed on board the English packet, where M. bid the lady “bonne voyage.” Our wealthy widower missed the lady, hut permitted the day to pass without making any inquiries after her; but next morning, tit breakfast, he did so, (the English packet having, in the interim, departed for England). M. de murely replied, “She has gone to England, father.” “Caramba !” exclaimed the old gentleman. “Hone to England, eh ? Thus you think to baulk mo, do you ?” and here the breakfast table was nearly overturned. “Hut i ’ll show you I’ll mar ry who 1 d—d please, and next year I’ll go to England after her, and marry her there.” Whether the old gentleman will do so, is, of course doubtful, but should he do so, it will not be tho first occasion in which an elderly gentleman, forgetting his wealth and position, lias married his housekeeper. ♦ A Lively Time Expected. The Richmond correspondent of the Danville Republican, closes a brief, but i spirited letter as follows : The Agricultural Fair, the Synod of the Presbyterian Church (Old School) on 1 the ild Wednesday in October, and the 1 Methodist Conference on the ”xth of No vember, together with other conventions will bring many of our friends from a dis tance to our city this fall. If the Union is not dissolved by the election of Fremont,, wo hope to have a good time. Cool Shooting. Umlef this heading, tho Crockett (Toxitrt) Printer, of the 20th ult,, hits the following: “Two men named lligohy and Kobbins ut a whisky Bland in tho north-eastern portion of Grime* county, got to quarreling: Loth had rificß : Rigehy up witli Ills and shut Robbing, wlio fell mortally* wounded ; but u:t lMgcby turned off cursing liim, Robbins tool: an aim us he lay dying on the g*ound, and shot Kige hy tiiough the heart.
