PROOFS 1 See what the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Missouri, says of Rhodes’ Fovet and Ague Cure, or An tidote to Malaria : St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 10, 1855. HAVING noticed the certificate of chemical analysis given by the celebrated chemist Dr. J. It. Chilton, Os New York city, la layer of Rhodes’ Fever and Aguo Cure, that it contained neither Quinine, Arsenic, Mor cuvp nor Strychnine, and having received numerous ap plications for it, 1 was induced to send to Dr. Rhoden for the medicine. Since then I have disposed of a large quantity, mostly to residents of this city, who have inva riably been cured by it, and to whorn 1 can refer. I am, therefore, satisfied in recommending it to be all that the proprietor represents. EDWARD S. WHEATON, Prosd't of Pharmaceutical Society of Missouri. TO Bottles Perform TO Cures. OoNsTANTINK, Mich., Sept. 24th, 1855. James A. Rhodes, Esq.—Dear Sir:—l have just sent an order to Ames (t Ilalliday for another half gross of your Fever aud Ague Cure. It Ims sold like “ llot Cakes,” and 1 have only two bottles on hand. One reason it has sold, is because when I have heard of a case of Aguo or Chill Fever, I have sent a bottle and told them to try it. and if it did not help them, they were not obliged to pay for it, auu they were all satisfied. I had one case of Chill Fever where it run four days, but the man came to see me on the sixth day well satisfied. Truly yours, JOHN P. GLADDING. Only Caution.—ln certain specified cases, pour the contents of one or more bottles of tho Cure into shallow vessels, (dining plates,) and place them in sleeping rooms ; for the vapor rising from the medicine, and also the air wafted across, or circulated over the dregs of it, after the liquid is evaporated, will counteract ami destroy, to a, deg.ee commensurate with its exp - sure, the miasmata or poison contained in the apartment. This mode of exhibiting the Cure should likewise be resorted to when very young infants are exposed to malarious situations. The bottles in which this medicine is put up have tho words, “Rhodes’ Fever axd Ague Cure” blown in the glass, and on the outside wrapper is tho name of the medicine, (the copyright of which is secured) and the signature of the proprietor. These precautions are taken to prevent counterfeits and imitations. The reliance for its success is entirely upon its votual merits, wherever introduced and used. These will be considered sufficient. October strews the woodland o’er With many a brilliant color; The world is brighter than before, Why should our hearts ho duller? Sorrow and the scarlet leaf. Sad thoughts and sunny weather— Ah me ! this glory and this grief Agree not well together. This is the parting season, this The time w hen friends are Hying; And lovers now, with many a kiss, i heir long farewells arc sighing. Why is eaitli so gaily dressed? This pomp that autumn benreth A funeral Seems, where every guest A bridal garment weareth. Each one of us may often here, On some blue morn hereafter, Return to view the gaudy year, lint not in boyish laughter. We shall then be w rinkled men, Our brows with silverJuden, And thou this glen may st seek lignin. But never more a maiden. Nature perhaps foresees that Spring Will tom b her teeming bosun, Aud thinks a few brief months will bring The bird—the bee—the blossom. Ah I these forests do not know, Or would less brightly wither, The virgin that adorns them so Will never more come hither. Potii-y of Commerce* The Hon. Edward Everett, whose bril liant genius gives a golden tinge of poetry to everything it touches, thus speaks of Commerce in his Jute beautiful speech at the Peabody Testimonial: Track its history for a moment from the earliest period. In the infancy of the world its caravans, like gigantic silk worms, went creeping through the arid wastes of Asia and Africa, with their in finitessimal legs, and bound the human family together in those vast regions as they bind it together now. Its colonial establishments scattered the Grecian cul ture all round the shores of the Mediter ranean, and carried the adventurers of Tyre and Carthage to the North of Europe and the South of Africa. The walled cities of the middle ages prevented the arts and refinements of life from being tram pled out of existence under the iron heel of the feudal powers. The Hanse Towns were the bulwark of liberty and property in the North and West of Europe for ages. The germ of the representative system sprang from the municipal franchi ses of the boroughs. At the revival of letters, the merchant princes of Florence received the fugitive arts of Greece into their palaces. The spirit of commercial adventure produced that movement in the fifteenth century, which carried Columbus to America, and Vasco di Gama around the Capo of Good Hope. The deep foun dations of the modern system of’ interna tional law were laid in interests and rights of commerce, and the necessity of protect ing them. Commerce sprinkled the treasures of the newly found Indies throughout the Western nations; it nerved the arm of civil and religious liberty in the Protest ant world- —it gradually carried tho colo nial system of Europe to the ends of the earth, and with it the elements of future independent, civilized, republican govern ments. But why should we dwell on the past? What is it that gives vigor to the civilization of the present day but the world-wide extension of commercial inter course, by which all the products of the earth and of the ocean, of the soil, the mine, of the loom, of the forge, of boun teous nature, creative art and untiring in dustry, are brought by the agencies of commerce into the universal market of de mand and supply? No matter in what region a desirable product is bestowed on man by a liberal Providence, or fabricated by human skill. It may clothe the hills of China with its fragrant foilage—it may glitter in the golden sands of California — it may wallow in the depth of the Arctic seas —it may ripen and whiten in the fer tile plains of the sunny South —it may spring forth from the flying shuttles of Manchester in England, or Manchester in America —the great world magnet of com merce attracts it alike, and gathers it all up for the service of man. The Limerick papers announce the death of tlie; dewater Lady O’Brien, mother of the present Lord Inchujuin and .Mr. AV. Smith O’Brien. By this event the latter gentleman obtains an in crease to his income from the famiiyprop erty of about $15,000 per annum, the de ceased lady having enjoyed a life-interest to that amount in art estate strictly settled on Mr. Smith O’Brien, and his heirs, after her demise. The London press, under the caption of “Literary Onion,” notice the marriage of Mr. John Forster, late editor of the Kx aminer, with Mrs. Colburn, widow of the late eminent publisher, by the Ilev. Whit well Klwyn, editor of the Quarterly Bo view. One of the Limerick papers states that, whether his consent he given or with drawn, no event is more probable than the election of Mr. Smith O’Brien by two if not three, of the great constituencies of the Province of Munster, when the next dissolution of Parliament occurs.
