Frai'mji.knt Imitations or SirraioK CoMMoiunrs,
Among the many dishonesties of trade which the mor
al sense of the community is called upon to suppress, we
would particularly notice a most perniciuusnml infamous
practice adopted hy unscrupulous dealers of imitating and
counterfeiting the exterior appearance ami precautionary
labels of popular drugs, raediesmentu, and other articles
of personal consumption, and thus, hy sei/.iug upon the
well acquired reputation of an enterprising trailer, pal
ming off moat destructive aud worthless compounds, to
the sure detriment not only of the consumer, hut to the
character of the man who lias expended tliousunds of
dolhtre iu bringing the genuine article into esteem and
demand. These petty larceny thieves are the pest of all
houurable dealers and traders, and the trade is us much
highway robbery as the violent appropriation of their
neighbor's purse; intact they are beneath thu burglar
and highwayman in dignity—for theae latter felons ex
hibit a bravery or reck leanness of character in unwise dis
tinguishing the mercantile assassin who stabs in the
dark. Aud ought they not lie rewarded with a punish
ment commensurate with the cowardice of their crime?
We were lod to those remarks hy accidentally observing
a spurious counterfeit of Udolpho Wolfe’s Scheidam
■Schnapps. ‘The labels were imitated perfectly, with the
slight addition of a few letters to pleud technics I Hvoid
unce of the law against counterfeiting ; the bottles were
very similar, and every thing carefully prepare! to im
pose upon a careless purchaser. Now is nutthe man who
perpetrated this fraud, a felon a rubber! Assuredly lie
is; for, as Mr. Wolfe has expended large sums to bring
iiis genuine imported schnapps into popular demand.
Hint demand may he justly considered a part of his cap
ihil in trade, and a fellow stealing a part of his reputa
tion is as much of a thief ns if he hud stolen a barrel ot
Ills schnapps in bulk. Anil tn this crime he adds a fur
ther one of defrauding the community hy giving them •
ruinous article sot the money they intended to expend
for a commodity in which they had confidence, Aud,
further, every man who participates indirectly in the
fraud, hy selling spurious articles is as much of an uflell
der as the principal who planned the imposition. Tm
remedy of Mr. Wolfe should lie iu iiis holding all concer
ned lip to the contempt of the community thuswii.dled
by their operations, and unconsciously imposed upon hy
their noxious coui|K>Uinri. We trust that Mr. Wolfs
will obtain names, not only of the coucoctors of these
counterfeits, hut of every man offering them for sale, and
then publish them to tin- world ; for his own reputation
and tlie health of the community demand thstall parties
should he nailed to the pillory of popular execration.
From the Now York Dispatch.
AN INFAMOUS MUSINKSS.
When an enterprising man strikes out u new business,
to the establishment of which he gives his industry, time,
talents anil pecuniary means, can anything be more con
temptible than to have another steal in, aud. under spe
cious pretext*, hold out to the public an inferior article,
amt endeavor to obtain their patronage? I’rsy, wha’
difference is there, so far ns the honesty of the thing is
concerned, betweed purloining tlie business hy which a
citizen hopes to make his bread and stealing the bread
itself? A common ttiief, if tie takes without leave, how
ever hungry, a loaf of bread from a baker’s shop, is appre
hended and condemned to the penitentiary fur during in
u suneptatiuiis manner to appease his appetite ; but put
a respectable looking coat on his hack and a lew dollars
ill his pocket, and lie may. with impunity, nuy, even
with the applause of his fellew*, hy knavery, forgery or
other infamous means, take the business of an houeat
man from him, amt go iiuecathed of justice. All this is
wrong. .Some years since a gent email ofthiscity (Udol
pho Woltej Introduced to the dtlxensof the United States
a medicated article of gin, which was highly approved hy
professional gentlemen as a superior tonic and deobstru
ent, and the knowledge of which he, liy advertisement
and otherwise, disseminated throughout the country.—
So soon us tricksters, who pass in the business commu
nity as honest men. saw that Mr. Wolfe was likely ti
have handsome returns for the time and money which
he hail expended, they set about forging Ills labels and
palming off upon the |ieople detestable aud poisonout
compound* which they have the hardihood to call “fichie
dam Suhnupp*. ’ In some instances they have gone so
far as to put Wolfe’s name to their villainous liquids.—
As this horde are growing bold ill their rascalities, it is
time the public In town and country were put upon theii
guard. Consumers should he sure that they purchase
the genuine article, or else their health may be irrepara
bly injured hy using the horrible stuff that unscrupulous
men, because they can buy it cheap, will offer as tlie gen
nine article. Pure Scheidam firhuapps cun only be ob
tained at the stores of respectable merchants and drug,
gists, hi town imd country, and at the establishment of
Udolpho Wolfe, Nos. 18, 2o and 22 Beaver Street, in this
city, where it is gotten up exclusively. We think it adu
ty which Mr. Wolfe owes to himself and the community
to publish, hy name, the rascals who are thus attempting
to defraud luitli him and those who would be his rusto
msrs. He should not permit his modesty to hold him
back from making so righteous an expose.
