Fn.U'Dti.KNT Imitations of Sufkkiok Commouiiiss,
Among the many dishonesties of trade which the mor
al sense of the community ia called upon to suppress, we
would particularly notice a most pernicious ami infamous
practice adopted hy unset uptilous deulersof imitating and
counterfeiting the exterior appearance and precautionary
labels of popular drugs, inedicamentu, and other articles
of personal consumption, and thus, hy seizing upon the
well acquired reputation of an enterprising trader, pal
niing off most destructive and worthless compounds, to
the sore detriment not only of the consumer, hut to the
character of tho man who lias expended thousands of
dollars in bringing the genuine article into esteem and
donumd. These petty larceny thieves are the peat of all
huuttrable dealer* ami traders, and the trade is as much
highway robbery as the violent appropriation of thoir
neighbor’s purse; in fact they are beneath the burglar
and highwayman indignity—for these latter felon* ex
hibit a bravery or recklessness of character iu nowise dis
tinguishing the mercantile assassin who stabs in the
dark. And ought they not la- rewarded with a punish
ment commensurate with the cowardice of their crime?
We were led to these remarks by accidentally observing
a spurious counterfeit of Udolpho Wolfe’s Scheidam
Schnapps. The labels were imitated perfectly, with the
slight addition of a few letters to plead technical avoid
ance of the law against counterfeiting: the bottles were
very similar, and every thing carefully prepared to im
pose upon a careless purchaser. Now is not the man who
perpetrated this fraud, a felon a robber? Assuredly he
is; for, as Mr. Wolfe has expended large sums to bring
his genuine imported schnapps, into popular demand,
that demand may he, justly considered a part of his cap
ital iu trade, ami a fellow stealing a part of his reputa
tion is as much of a thief as if lie had stolen a barrel of
his schnapps in hulk. And to this crime he adds a fur
ther one of defrauding the community hy giving them a
ruinous article for the money they intended to expend
for a commodity iu which they had confidence. And,
further, every limn who participates indirectly in the
fraud, by selling spurious articles is as much of an offen
der as the principal who plunned the imposition. Tue
remedy of Mr. Wolfe should lie ill his huidiug ull concer
ned up to the contempt of tho community thus swindled
by their operations, and unconsciously imposed upon hy
their noxious composition. We trust that Mr. Wolfe
will obtain names, not only of the coucoctore of these
counterfeits, hut of every man offering them forsale.aud
then publish them to the world ; for his ow n reputation
and the health of the community demand I iiat ull parties
should he nailed to the pillory ol popular execration.
From the New York Dispatch.
AN INFAMOUS BUNINKSg.
When an enterprising man strikes out u new business,
to tiic establishment of which he gives ids industry, time,
talents and pecuniary means, can anything he more con
temptible tluin to have another steal in, and, under spe
cious pretexts, hold out to the public an inferior article,
and endeavor to obtain their patronage? pray, what
difference Is there, so far us the, honesty of the thing is
concerned, bet weed purloining the business hy whirli a
citizen hopes to make his 1 1 read and steuling the bread
itself? A common thief, if he takes without leave, how
ever hungry, u loaf of bread from u baker’s shop, is appre
hended and condemned to the penitentiary for daring in
a surreptutiou* manlier to appease Ids appetite; hut put
a respectable looking coat on bin hack and u tew dollars
in Ids pocket, aud he may, with impunity, ny, even
with the applause of his fellaws, hy knavery, forgery or
other infamous means, take the business of hii honest
man from him, and go unscathed of justice. All this is
wrong. Some years since a gent. email of thiscity (Udol
pho Wolte) introduced to the citizens of the United States
a medicated article of gin, which was highly approved hy
professional gentlemen as a superior tonic and deohstru
ent, and the knowledge of which 110, hy advertisement
and otherwise, disseminated throughout tho country.
So soon as tricksters, who pass in tho business commu
nity as holiest men, saw that Mr. Wolfe was likely to
have handsome returns for the time and money which
he had expended, they set about forging Ills labels and
palming off upon the people detestable and poisonous
compounds which they have the hurdihood to call “Schie
dam Schnapps.” In some instances they hare gone so
far as to put Wolfe’s name to their villainous liquids.—
As this horde are growing hold in their rascalities, it is
time the public in town and country w ere put upon their
guard. Consumers should he sure that they purchase
the genuine article, or else their health may he irrepara
bly injured hy using the horrible stuff that unscrupulous
men, because they can buy it cheap, will offeras the gen
uine article. I'uro Scheidam Schnapps can only be ob
tained at the stores of respectable merchants and drug,
gists, in town and country, and ut the establishment of
Udolpho Wolfe, Nos. 18, 20 and 22 Beaver Street, in this
city, w here it is gotten up exclusively. We think it a du
ty which Mr. Wolfe owes to himself and the community
to publish, hy name, thu rascal* who are thus attempting
to defraud both him and those who would he hi* custo
mers. He should not permit his modesty to hold hltn
hack from making so righteous au expose.

PROF. O. J. WOOD—Dear Sir—l take ploasure in
bearing voluntary testimony to lbs magic eflects of
your wonderful Hair Restorative. Aa fat hack at 1836,
my hair commenced falling oil, until tha top of my aralp
became bald aud as smooth as glass, and It has continued
to fall for a great many years, notwithstanding I bavs
used many celebrated preparations for its lestoratioa.
Seeing your advertisement. I was induced to giva your
article a trial, and, to my utter astonishment, 1 found
after u few applications, that un.> Lair became firmly set,
aud assumed a glossy and beaul.ful appearance; and by
the time I had used a quart I ...lls, my bald head was
covered with a young and vigorous grow th if hair, which
is now from one to two inches In length, and growing
fast. Yours, truly, 11KN RY GOODRICH.

PROF. O. J. WOOD—Dear Sir—After reading th* ad

celebrated Hair Restorative, 1 procured a half pint bot
tle, ami was so much pleased with it, that 1 continued
its use for two months, aud am satisfied it is decidedly th*
best preparation before the public. It at once removed
all dandruff and unpleasant itching from th* scalp, and
has restored nty hair naturally, and, 1 kav* io doubt,
permanently so.
You have pet mission to refer to mo, all who entertain
any doubt of its performing all that ia claimed for it.
