FR.trnfi.KNV Imitations or Sit-kriof. CommoMtus,
Among tlie many dishoueslies of trade which tin- mor
al sense of the community is called upon to suppn-ss, w e
would particularly notice a most pernicious und iul.iuious
practice adopted by unsci upulotis deulersof imitating and
counterfeiting the exterior appearance uudpreciiulioiiary
labels of popular drugs, medii amenta, and other articles
of personal consumption, and thus, by seizing upon the
well acquired reputation of un enterprising trader, pal
ming off most destructive aud worthless compounds, to
tho sore detriment not only of the consumer, but to the
character of the. man who lias expended thousand* of
dollars in bringing the genuine article into esteem aud
demand. These petty larceny thieves are tho pest of all
lionartible dealers und traders, and the trade is us much
highway robbery as the violent appropriation ot their
neighbor’s purse; in fact they are beneath the burglar
and highwayman in dignity—for these laller felons ex
hibit a bravery or recklessness of character in unwise dis
tinguishing the mercantile assassin who stubs iu the
dark. And ought they not he rewarded with a punish
ment commensurate with the cowardice of their crime ?
We were led to these remarks by accidentally observing
a spurious counterfeit of Udolplio Wolfe's Fcheidaiu
■Schnapps. Tho labels were imitated perfectly, with the
slight addition of u few letters to plead technical avoid
ance of the law against counterfeiting; the bottles were
very similar, and every tiling carefully prepuce I to im
pose upon a careless purchaser. Now is not tlie man who
perpetrated this fraud, a felon a robber '! Assuredly In
is: for, as Mr. Wolfe has expended large sums lo bring
his genuine imported schnapps into popular demand,
that demand may be justly considered a pin t of his cap
ital in trade, and a fellow stealing a part of his reputa
tion i* as much of 11 thief as if lie hud stolen a barrel of
hisHi hnapps in bulk. And to this crime lie odds a fur
ther one of defrauding the comm unity by giving them a
ruinous article fin- tlie money they Intended to expend
for 11 commodity iu which they hud confidence. And,
further, every man who participates indirectly in the
fraud, by selling spuriou.- articles is ns luucli ol an offen
der as tlie principal who planned the imposition. Tne
remedy of Mr. Wolfe should lie in bis holding all concer
ned up to the contempt of the community thus swindled
by their operations, ami unconsciously imposed upon by
their noxious composition. We trust that Mr. Wullv
will obtain names, not only of the conroctors of these
counterfeits, but of every man offering them (<>r sale, and
then publish them to the world ; for his own reputation
and (lie health of the community demand that all parties
should lie nailed to the pillory of popular execration.
From the New York Disputch.
AN INFAMOUS BUSINKM.
When an enterprising man strike* out anew business,
to the establishment of w hich lie gives his industry, time,
talents and pecuniary means, can anything be more con
temptible than to have another steal in, and, under spe
cious pretexts hold out to the public mi inferior arti- le,
ami endeavor to obtain their patronage’ pray, what
difference is there, so far us the honesty of the thing is
concerned, Is tweed purloining the business by which a
citizen hopes to make his bread and stealing the bread
it sell! A common thief, if he takes without leave, how
ever hungry, a loaf of bread from a linker’s shop, ie appre
hended and condemned to the penitentiary for daring iu
a surreptatiuiis manner to upuease his appetite ; but put
a respectable looking coat on III* back and a few dollars
in his pocket, and he may. with impunity, nay, even
with tlie applause of his felWws, by knavery, lorgery or
other infamous means, take the business ol an honest
man from him, and go unscathed of justice. All this is
wrong. Home years since a gent. email of this city (Udul
phu Wolle) introduced to the citizens of the l ulled States
a medicated article of gill, w hich was highly approved by
professional gentlemen as a superior tonic and di-obstru
eut. uml the knowledge of which lie, by advertisement
and otherwise, disseminated throughout the country.
So soon as tricksters, who pass iu the business commu
nity in liuiii-.it lilt'll, saw Glut Mr. Wolfe was likely to
have handsome returns for the time und money which
he had e.vpcuded, they set uhout forging his labels slid
palming off upon the people detestable and poisonous
compounds which they have the hardihood to call “Schie
Jam Hshnapps.” In some instances they have gone so
far ns to put Wolfe’s name to their villuiuous liquids.—
A* this horde are growing bold iu their rascalities, it is
time tin- public in town aud country were put upon their
guard. Consumers should be sure that they purchase
the genuine article, or else their health may be irrepara
bly liijuicij by using the horrible stuff that unscrupulous
men, because they can buy it cheap, will offer as the gen
uine article. Pure Sehefdnrn Schnapps can only be ob
tained at the etores of respectable merchants and drug,
gists, iu town und country, ami at the establishment of
Udolplio Wolfe, Nos. IS, 20 and 22 Heaver Street, in this
city, where it is gotten up exclusively. We think It a du
ty which Mr. Wolfe owes to himself and the community
to publish, by name, tin* rascals who are thus attempting
to defraud both him anil those who would be bis custo
mers. He should not permit his modesty to hold him
back from making so righteous au expose.
