Fraudulknt Imitations of Sitkiuor Commodities,
Among the many dishonesties of trade w hich the mor
al sense of the community is called upon to suppress, we
would particularly notice a most pernuiousand intuitions
practice adopted by unscrupulous dculcrsoHinitutinguiid
counterfeiting the exterior appearance and precautionary
labels of popular drugs, tnedicuincntn, and other articles
of personal consumption, and thus, by seizing upon the
well acquired reputation of an enterprising trader, pal
ming oil mosr destructive and worthless compounds, to
the sore detriment not only of tho consumer, but to the
character of the man who has expended thousands of
dollars in Wringing Me* genuine article into esteem and
demand. These potty larceny thieves are the pest of ail
linmirahle desiters and traders, and the trade is as much
highway robbery as tlie violent appropriation of their
neighbor's purse; intact they are beneath the burglar
and highwayman indignity—for these latter felons ex
hibit a bravery or recklessness of character‘in nowise dis
tinguishing tie- mercantile assassin who stabs in the
dark. And ought they not le rewarded with u punish
ment commensurate with the cowardice of their crime?
We were led to these remarks by accidentally observing
a spurious counterfeit of Udolpbo Wolfe’s Seheidam
Schnapps. Tho labels were imitated perfectly, with the
slight addition *f a few letters to plead technical avoid
ance of the law against counterfeiting; the hot ties wore
very similar, and every thing carefully prepared to im
pose upon a careless purchaser. Now i* mt the man who
perpetrated this fraud, a felon a robber? Assuredly hr
is: for. as Mr. Wolfe lias expended large sums to bring
bis genuine imported schnapps into popular demand,
that demand may be justly considered a part of his cap
ital in trade, and n fellow stealing a part of his reputa
tion is as much of h thief ns if lie had stolen n barrel of
his schnapps in bulk. And to this crime he adds a fur
ther one of defrauding tin* community hy giving them a
ruinous article for the money they intended to expend
for a commodity in which they hud confidence. And,
further, every man who participntea indirectly’ in the
fraud, by selling spurious articles is as much of an offen
der as tite principal who planned the imposition. Tne
remedy of Mr. Wolfe should lie in Ids holding all concer
ned up b* the contempt of the community t hits swindled
by their operation*, and unconsciously imposed upon by
tlndi noxious composition. We trust that Mr. Wolfe
will obtain names, not only of the concoetors Os these
conn tui frits, but of every man offering them for sale, and
then publish tlie in to the world; for Jds own reputation
and the health of tbe community demand that all parties
should be nailed to tile pillory of popular execration.

AN INFAMOUS DUSINKMS.
When an enterprising man strikes out anew business,
to the establishment of which he gives his industry, time,
talents and pecuniary means, cun any thing lm more con
tomptihle than to have another steal in. and, under spe
cious pretexts bold out to the public an inferior article,
and endeavor b> obtain their patronage? Pray, what
difference is there, so far as the honesty of the tiling is
concerned, betweed purloining the business by which 11
citizen hopes to make ids bread and stealing the bread
itself? A common thief, if he takes without leave, how
ever hungry. i loaf of bread from a baker’s shop, is appre
hended and condemned to tlie penitentiary for daring in
a surreptatiotU manlier to appease his appetite; but put
n respectable looking coat on liis back and a lew dollars
in his pocket, and lie may, with impunity, nay, even
wit la tin* applause of his fellows, by knavery, forgery or
other Infamous means, take the business of an honest
man from him, and go un scathed of Justice. Ail tills is
wrong. Some years since a gentleman of tliiscity (Udol
pho Wolfe) Introduced to tho citizens of the United States
a medicated article of gin. which was highly approved by
professional gentlemen as a superior tonic and deobstru
ent. and the knowledge of w tiich be, by advertisement
aud otherwise, disseminated throughout the country.—
So soon as tricksters, who pass in the business commu
nity as Iwnie-t men, saw that Mr. Wolfe was likely to
have handsome returns for tlie time and money which
he bad expended, they set about forging his labels and
palming off upon the noople detestable and polfonout
compounds which they have the hardihood to call “tfchln.
• lain FaHiiapps.'* In some instances they have gons so
far as to put Wolfe’s name to their villainous liquids.—
A a tills horde are growltig bold in their rascalities, It ia
time tin* public in town and country ware put upon their
guard. Consumer* shouid be sure that they purchase
the genuine article, or else tlielr health may be irrepara
bly injured by using the horrible stuff that unscrupulous
nun. because they can buv It cheap, will offer a* the gen
uine article. Pure ttehnappM can only be ob
tained at the stores of respectubb* merchants aud drug,
gtet*. in town and country, and at the establishment of
I’dolpho Wolfe, Nos. IH, 2t> and TZ Heaver Street, in this
city, where It is gotten up exclusively. We think it u du
ty which Mr. Wolfe owe* to himself and the community
to publish, by name, the rascal* who are thus attempting
to de.frnud both him and those who would be hia custo
mers. He should not permit his modesty to hold him
back from making so righteous an expose.
