Variola, Varioloid, llubeolu anil Scarla
tina) or Small Pox, Varioloid, Measles,
and Scarlet Fever.
As all of these diseases are attended w ith fever, which
iu fact is the must prominent symptom, the treatment
differs bue little from that of common fevers, ltemeinber
never wait to learn the ” name,'’ whether it is one or the
other, or ntiUtef, us they all cuiniuence with fetter, but
treat it at once; govern the fever aud there will be no
trouble; there will lie Out little eruption even iu sinuil
pox. Tills, to must lnilids, is a uev, idea, and doubtless
will be regarded with ridicule by many. 1 nevertheless
huldly muke the assertion, that small pox, if treated as
I direct, will bo cat short; attended with but little ertije
tiou; little or no jutting, and that there is no nevetiitg id’
its ruuuiug its ordinary course. On this i will stake
uot only my reputation, nut ad that I hold most dear;
besides, on this subject, 1 have good authority; that of
Frol. Watson, previously quoted, lie says, page 874;
“You may abate the force of the eruptive fever, aud
keeji dow u, it is believed, the number of the pustules by
spline purges, Ac.” Here Is the admission Unit it may
be done, i nave not only proven il mug be., ImL has
hem done in kuuiuious cases that occuricd “It hoard
ship. Sec the account appe.uduil.
Uive a Inusjioonful or mure, according to tin- urgency
of tiie case, with a dose of salts or castor oil; repeat the
Fluid once iu two hours if necessary, until the lever sub
sides—though one or two doses is gcueru.ly sufficient;
but It should be given aud repeated sufficiently to keep
the under control. When the throat is affected,
any of the ordinary gargles may lie used, aud the
surface butlieil, as thought ad usable.
In one case, on tiie ship Duchess d'Orleuns, the tongue
and fuuciM were so much swollen that the patient could
not swallow or apeak, and he was cured hy dropping the
Fluid on Ins tongue, drop hy drop, till In*could swallow,
when il was given iu teaspoonful dose* ererg hour, till
all alarming symptoms disappeared. The swelling of
llte throat whs reduced so as to enable him to take nour
ishment in about twelve hours hy tin* Fluid alone.—
Used to wet the throat frequently, il is doubtless the
best gurgle in all such cases.
Puerperal or Childbed Fever.,
This heretofore painful, dangerous and alarming
malady to which the mother Is liable, will yield tu the
Negative Klectric Fluid with such nailincss, as to seem
to tie of little consequence. A single dose or two of a
teaspoonful, utmost invariably giviug entire aud per
maueut relief; uo alarm Heed he entertained, as tin*
Fluid will arrest it ill a abort time, ltshonld lie re
peated as long as the fever continues, as in other cases.
Tin* bowels ot course should he attended to.
In connection with this subject, 1 cannot retrain from
making a few general remarks, which, if regarded by
ilia ladies, will save them in nidi pain and suffering, it
is to inform them of tiie happy effect of the Fluid in
many of their trials. In cliild-hirth, its relaxing and
soothing effect deprives Hid labor of much of its pains
aud dim. ullies; it must lie tried to be appreciated.—
I'aiuful menstruation will Ihi relieved at once by a com
mon dose aud retiring. KesllefcaiieNi', nervous irritability,
ora cold taken at a delicate lime, is easily relieved by
Its use; iu short, it is one of the most convenient aud
effectual remedies for many of the ills of females, if not
the most so of any medicine known. Its effect is uniform,
relaxing tho whole system, rumoring all excitability
and irituliility of the nervous as well as the circulatory.
It will not force Aleepi like nplnlen, hut it will south and
quiet the system so ttiat out: can aletqi naturally aud
healthy; hence its use in so many cases.
Synopsis,
To avoid constant repetition, and Condense tin: treat
ment tvs luoeli as possible, 1 give uudnr tins head general
directions for alt cases. As tin: Negative Klectric Fluid
will change Hie condition called fever, or subdue auil
coutrol It uiuler ull circumstances, without regard to the
name it may be or ought to las culled, it should be given
wherever of whenever it exists; yet it cannot hex
pected to control ull organic or local causes, which,
when such exist, must fie removed il) order to effect a
permanent cure.
When such indications occur in any case, they should
be appropriate ineuus, uud these boiiuid he given w hile
giving tiie “ Fluid,” ami in connection with it, when
occasion requires, as they will then more readily act,
producing inure general effect, besides no unnecessary
lime will then he lost. As the ‘, Fluid” alone will sub
due the fever, l call all else auxiliary treatment.
If the bowels are costive, give a cathartic (see auxili
aries) witli tiie first duHe, or soon after, and should it
fail to operate in due time, repeat the dose; if attended
with diarrhoea, give something known to bp good for
Hint complaint, though if caused by irritability, the
“Fluid” will scon relieve that condition; if severe local
pain or infiHinmatioß, aiqdy some stimulating liniment,
a mustard plaster, a blister, fomentations of hitter herbs,
or, perhaps, cloths wet in cold water, to tiie part; if
violent pain in tho head, apply cold water, ice water,
if convenient, or some cooling application, and bathe
the feet iu hot water; if the fever is very high, skiu
dry and hot, with grout suffering, sponge or bathe the
whole surface with water at uu agreeable temperature;
“ the saline wash,” vinegar and water or spirits aud
water, either will afford great relief ami aid the medi
cine in taking effect, ufter which there will be uo trou
ble; if tint patient has been reiluced or is much prostra
ted, give tonics aud stimulants, particularly in low
fevers, iu abseuce of fever or when indicated; also,
during convalescence, when the patieut has become re
duced ; if there is nausea and vomiting, that must be
allayeil before any medicine will remain on the stomach
todouny good; for this jnirpose I generally give settle
gedUe emetic to cleanse the stomach; warm water, if
given plentifully, will answer every purpose; when the
stomach lias settled, give tiie “ Fluid” uud u cathartic if
necessary; in short, treat all the prominent symptoms
as you wottlil under tiny other circumstances, giving tho
“Fluid” at the same time ns directed, hiul success will
crown your efforts; indeed, you canuot realize it till you
have seen, and then you will be astonished at the ease
with which you can control till febrile excitement.

Parties may feel a! a loss to know what is meant hy
cathartics, Ac., us physicians are usually particular
about what is useil. 1 have found uo such necessity
when using the Fluid, ami to tie tally understood by
all, I will name a lew of tho different articles of medi
cine 1 have referred to, viz:—
flat Hart tea.—Articles that purge or operate on tlio
bowels, such as castor oil, salts, sou mi, tiny of tho routs
or barks, and many pills, autibilimis, Ac.; anything
known to be gooil for such purposes.
Hepatic*.—Anything known to act on the liver
particularly, portal circulation and secretions generally.
Any of tiie articles depended on by the different schools
for tills purpose, will answer when used In connection
willi Hie “Fluid” or while the system is under its in
fluence. And one may choose calomel—another, blue

root, and so on; each may take Ids choice ami Is: suc

Tonic*.— Articles that give tone or streugth, such
as quinine, various barks, roots ami bitter herbs. Bone
lei or tboroughwort is oue of the best used in level s.
A*t rluK<-nt *.—Such as check the action of the
bowels. Laudanum uud oilier preparations of opium at e
used; also, insuy mixtures, uot properly astringent*,
which have tiie effect.
Stimulant*.—Articles that raise or excite the
system. Cupsicnw (Cayenne pepper) is oue of the beet;
ginger, spirits, liurtsboru, Ac., the esesnres are all more
or less stimulating. These are tho only classes neressa
ry in treating fevers, though tunny others are generally
used, but the Negative KleCtrio Fluid is it bet'er “dia
