THE DAILY SUN. The Cotton Trnilv, Upwards of 600,000 workers are now employed in our cotton factories, and it has been estimated that at least 40,000 persons in this country are dependent upon the cotton trade for subsistence. A century ago Lancashire contained a pop ulation of only 1100,000 persons; it now numbers 2,1100,000. In the same period of time this enormous increase cxccods that on auy other equal surface of tho globe, and is entirely owing to tho devel opment of tho cotton trade. In 1b5(5 there were in tho United Kingdom 2,210 factories running 28,000,000 spindles and 220,000 looms 97,000 horse power. Since that period a considerable number of new mills have been erected and ex tensive additions have been made to the spinning and weaving machinery of those previously in existence. The amount of nctunl capital invested in the cotton trade of this kingdom is estimated to bo be tween .£00,000,000 and £170,000,000 ster ling. The quantity of cotton imported into this country in 1850 was l,lßlj million pounds weight, tho value of which, at Od per lb, is equal to £1110,000,000. Out of 2,820,100 bales cotton imported into Great Hritain America has supplied us with 2,080,1141, that is 5-7th, of the whole. In other words, out of 7 lbs im ported from all countries into Great llrit ain, America lias supplied 5 lbs. India has sent us about 500,000 bales. Eg*pt about 100,000, Mouth America 124,000, and other countries between 8,000 and 0,000 bales. In 1859 the total value of the exports from Great Britain amounted to £1130,613,185, of which £17,920,720 consisted of cotton goods and yarns. Thus, more than one third, or .Cl out of every £3 of our entire exports consists of cotton. Add to this the proportion of cotton which forms purt of tho twelve millions more exported in the shape of mixed woolens, haberdashery, milinery, silks, apparel, and slops, ‘tireat Britain alone consumes annually 21 millions’ worth of cotton goods. Two conclusions, therefore, may safely be drawn from tho facts and figures now cited—first, that the interests of every cotton-worker are bound lip with a gigan tic trade which keeps in motion an euor mous mass of capital, and this capital, machinery, and labor depend for live sevenths of its employment upon the slave States of America for prosperity and continuance; secondly, that if a war should at any time break out between England and America, a general insur rection would take place among the slaves, disease swoop of!’ those slaves by death, the cotton crop fall short in quality, whether from severe frosts, disease of tho plant, or other possible cnusc—our mills would bo stopped for want of cotton, em ployers would be ruined, and famine would stalk abroad among the hundreds and thousands of working pcoplo who are at presout fortunately well employed. Calculate the consequences for yourselves Imagine a dearth of cotton, and you may picture the horrors of such a cnlainity from tho scenes you may possibly have witnessed when the mills have only run on “short time.” Count up all the trades that are kept going out of the wages of tho workiug classes, independent of build ers, mechanics, engineers, colliers, Ac., employed by the rnillowncrs. Railways would cease to pay, and our ships would lie rotting in their ports, should a scarci ty of the raw material for manufacture overtake us. —Cotton Supply Iteportrr. Giving health and vigor to the frame, and bloom to the pallid cheek JOY TO THE AFFLICTED! It cures Nervous and Debilitated Sufferers, and removes all the symptoms, among which will be found— Indisposition to Exertion, Less of Power, Loss of Memory, Difficulty of Breathing, Gen eral Weakness, Horror of Disease, Weak Nerves, Trembling, Dreadful Horror of Death, Night Sweats, Cold Feet, Weakfulness, Dimness of Vision, Languor, Universal Lassitude of the Muscular System, Often Enormous Appetite with Dyspeptic Symptoms, Hot Hands, Flushing of the Body, Dryness of tli© Skin, Pallid Countenance and Eruptions on the Face, Pain in the Back, Heaviness of the Eyelids, Frequent Black Spots Flying before the Eyes, with Temporary Suffusion and Loss of Sight, Want of Attention, Great Mobility, Restlessness, with Horror of Society—nothing is more desira bleto such Patients than Solitude, and nothing they more Dread for fear of themselves; no Repose of Manner, no Earnestness, no Speculation, but a Hurried Transi tion from one question to another. These symptoms, if allowed to go on (which this Medicine invariably removes), soon follows Loss of Power, Fatuity, and Epileptic Fits —in oneof which the patient may expire. Who can say that those excesses are not frequently followed by those dire ful diseases, Insanity and Consumption ? The re cords of the Insane Asylums, and the melancholy deaths by Consnmption, bear ample witness to the truth of these assertions. In Lunatic Asylums the most melancholy exhibition appears. The countenance is actually sodden and quite destitute —neither Mirth or Grief ever visits it. Should a sound of the voice occur, it is rarely articulate. “With woeful measures wau despair Low sullen sounds his grief beguiled.” Debility is most terrible! and has brought thou sands upon thousands to untimely graves, thus blasting the ambition of many noble youths. It can be cured by the use of this lufalliblo 3Ft.oxi3.ociy. If you are suffering with any of the above dis tressing ailments, the FLUID EXTRACT BUCHU will cure you. Try it and be convinced of its efficacy. BEWARE OF QUACK NOSTRUMS and QUACK DOCTORS! who falsely boast of abilities and re ferences. Colnmhns, May 14,1859. ts AROMATIC^VALLEY WHISKY. IN this age of adulterated and deleterious Li quors, it is a source of satisfaction to be able to introduce to public notice the above article---an article of unquestioned purity, and possessing no qualities except such as have the most favoiable influence on the human constitution A few rods of soil on the banks of the Rhine produces the grape which will flourish nowhere else, from whose juico proceeds the “Johaunis berg.” the choicest wine in the world. A few acres of land iu Cuba produces a tobacco, the flavor aud quality of which, when manufac tured iuto cigars, ate incomparably superior to that of any other soil. Aud a uarrow strip of land in the parish of Natchitochee, iu Louisiana, has long supplied the world w ith a super-excellent article of snuff, from such tobacco as cannot be induced to grow else where. In like manner it has long been known that a limited territory, lying in the valley cf the Mo nongaliela river, exclusively brings forth a rye of properties so marked and peculiar that its distilla tion produces a Whisky of such superlative char acter as places it beyond rivalry. By a process recently discovered, and now known only to my manufacturer, the graiu from the choicest spot of this favored locality is made to yield the Aromatic Valley Whisky, with which no other can stand au instant s com parison. I have no apprehension of being accused of pub lishing unwanantalde, or even exaggerated enco miums, to any who will first subject my Whisky to test. It is now the standard article at all the first class Hotels and Clubs iu the city of New Y T ork, and wherever it is introduced it at once assumes its leading positiou, is AWARDED THE PALM OF SUPERIORITY, and the demand forit becomes a thing established. Its medicinal properties are such, that while its immediate effects are pleasuut aud grateful, it ex ercises the happiest permanent influence upon the constitution. I have analyzed a sample of “Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky,” and find it to be a pure article, of flue flavor, and without auy deleteiious admix ture. JAMES B. CHILTON, M. D , Chemist.
