For Statesmen, Judges, Clergymen,
I ADI Erf AND GENTLEMEN, iu all part* of the

Wood’* Hair Restorative, and gentlemen of the
Press are unanimous iu its praise. A few testimo

47 Wall Street, New York,)
Dec 20th,1868. /
Gentlemen: Your note of the 16th iust.has been
received, saying that you had heard tlint I hud
boon bench tied by the use of Wood’s Hair Restora
tive, and requesting my certificate of the fact if 1
had no objection to give it.
1 award it to you cheerfully, because I think It
due. My ago is about 60 years; the color of my
iiair auburn, and inclined to curl. Some five or
six years since it began to turn gray and tho scalp
on the crown of my bead to lose its sensibility and
dandruff to form upon it. Eacli of these disagree**
bilities increased with time, andaboutfour months
since a fourtli was added to them, by hair falling
off the top of my head and threatening to make
me bald.
In tiiis unpleasant predicament, I was induced
to try Wood’s Ilair Restorative, mainly to arrest
the falling off’ of my hair, for I had really no ex
pectation that gray hair could ever be restored to
its original color, except from dyes. 1 was, how
ever, greatly surprised to find, after the use of
two bottles only, that not only was the falliug off
arrested, but the color was restored to the gray
hairs aud sensibility to the scalp, aud daudrutl
ceased to form on my head, very much to the
gratification of iny wife,at whose solicitation I was
induced to try It
For this, among the many obligations 1 owe to
her sex, 1 strongly recommend all husbunds who
value the admiration of their wives, to profit by
my example, and use it if growing gray or getting
bald. Very retpectfully,
BEN.I. A. LAVENDER.

Fire*.
The Norfolk Day Book lcurns from u
Southern traveler that on Saturday
there were a tremendous fire raging in
tho Turpentine YVoodß, in Georgia, about
sixty miles this side of Augusta. The
roaring of the flames, it ig said, could be
heard several miles. About half way be
tween Goldsboro’and Weldon, N. C., on
tho Wilmington Hail Road, another fire
was raging on Friday night, in the woods,
and that extended about two miles in
length.
Cowardly Assault.
The Nashville Union states that aa Hon.
Solan Borland and Mr. L. 1). Stickney,
of the Memphis Enquirer, wero standing
in front of their office on Shelby street,
late Tuesday night, they were assaulted
by throe rowdies, who, after knocking
them down, sucocoded in making their
escape, ono of thorn struck Mr. Stickney
a severe blow in the face ; another of
the villains then struck Mr. Borland,
probably with knuckles, for llio face was
cut in two places and a tooth knocked
out. Mr. Borland fell from the violenca
of the blow.

Drowning.
The Memphis Avalanche states that on
Wednesday evening ayouug man residing
in South Memphis attempted to cross to
the Arkansas sido of the river in a skiff.
After proceeding about haifthe distance,
the violence of the wiud caused his frail
hark to upset, and he was precipitated
into the water. Ilis friends on the Mem
phis side witnessed his unavailing efforts
to right the skiff, aud two of them imme
diately proceeded to his relief. They
cast loose another skill', but had proceed
ed only a little way wheu they, too, were
overturned, and reached the shore with
difficulty. Thu youug man, seeing the
hopelessness of the efforts put forth to
savo him, abandoned the skiff, and boldly
struck out for land. By this time a large
crowd had gathered on the bluff, and no
craft being at baud that could be sent for
the unlucky voyageur, his efforts to reach
the shore were witnessed with the most
intense interest. The wind was pretty
stiff, to use a nautical phrase, and as the
white-coped waves would swell up and
conceal the struggling man from view, it
was thought that ho hail given up in des
pair—but, ever and anon, he would rise
to the surface, ns it were, and strike out
again, taking a diagonal course for the
Tennessee shore. For an hour and three
quarters lie breasted the waves, stopping
at intervals to “float” and rest himself,
and fmally reached the land almost ex
hausted, two miles below the place he
had started from.

Decrease of Slaves Iu Delaware.
An cxchaDgo says Delaware is rapidly
getting rid of her slaves. She had 8,000
at the first census, and but 2,200 at the
last one. Their owners find it more
profitable to sell them at the South tliau
to keep them. Sussex county alone ships
to the South, on an average, six per
week, or two hundred and twelve a year.
Kvery census shows a decrease of ten
per cent, in tho slave population.
