Phillips, Mr. William S. Rockwell, of Georgia, was admitted an attorney and counsellor of thnt court. -♦ Tho editor of the Ncw # Vork “Old Spirit” went to see Adah Isaacs Menken llopnan act tho other night. He writes in bis paper that, “in professional lan guage she strips well.’’ ♦ A Mrs. St. Joheus, of Mt. The hoy levelled tho gun at his mother iu sport, not knowing lliut it was loaded, when to his inliuatc consternation, it Went off, killing her almost instantly. —. ♦ —— .fudge I. The Atlanta Intelligencer learns that this gentleman lias purchased property in, and has determined to become a per manent resident of that city. His pres ent place of icsidonco is Albany. • Sale of hlauurs, The Supreme Court of Mississippi has affirmed the validity of the law making it penal for retailers to sell liquor to a drunken man, und declaring that the owner of tho establishment is responsible instead of the bar keeper in this behalf. ♦ ■ Later from Trias. Tho whole amount of cotton received at Galveston, says tho Civilian, sincu tho Ist of September exceeds the whole amount sent to that port last year, for seven months ending April Ist, 14,806 bab a wcie received. So IV uni nail Nat uvnltzul 1011, A special dispatch to tho llultimore Sun from Washington, the Oth, states that Mr. Seward’s friends in that city, speak openly of plans by which Conuec ticutis to he assured to him iu Novem ber. The plans relate to tho imposition by the Legislature of additional restric tions upon naturalised citizens. Accident ally Sliot. The. Savannah News stales that a young sou of Mr. ltoullineau, of that city, acci dentally diet his mother Monday after noon. He was on tho point of leaving the bouse, with the pistol in his hand, and stopped a moment at the door to speak to his mother, when the weapon was accidentally discharged with such disastrous consequences. It is supposed that the pistol was cocked, without tho boy’s knowledge, and tlint liis linger came in contact with the trigger. —— ♦ Notional limot rii l l Committee. At a convention of the National Demo cratic Committee at Washington to con sider the expediency of changing tho place of holding the l’residentlal Conven tion, Alabama was represented by Hon. Henry l). Smith, and Georgia by llou. .lames Jackson. Tho former made a speech opposing the changing of the place, ami disputing the power of the Committee to do so. Mr. Smith has, for overa! sessions, represented Lauderdale comity in the Alabama Legislature. ■ a Augusta M uitlcl|ial KLclloii. The election held iu Augusta Monday for Mayor and Aldermen, as wo learti from our exchanges from that city, resulted iu the selection of Foster lllodget, Jr., loud er of tho Independent Ticket, over Robert 11. May, leader of the I’eople’s Ticket, by two majority. The candidates for Al dermen on the latter ticket wero elected. There wero six Democrats and six Americans on eaeli one, and no question of a political character was involved in the contest. We are pleased to know that lintli tickets were publicly commit ted to tho Macon liailroad. Suprt'mr Court Uicitimi. lit the onso of Urich U. Wilkinson, VlainlifT in I'.rror, rs. Jeffers & Cothran, from Coweta Superior Court, the Supreme Court, at its present session in Atlanta, aflirmei! the judgment of the Court below, anil held that a negotiable promissory note trasferred as it collateral security, is not subject in the hands of the holder to setts-off or demands by the market against the payee, and this whether the note be endorsed before or after maturity, when the demand does not growr out of tho original consideration of the note. ♦ The California Trlcgi-apli. A dispatch from St. Louis, the fith inst., says tho operator at Fresno City writes that they are extending the line Fast rapidly. It will bo iu operation to Visalia, over sixty miles this side of Fresno, in two weeks from March 17, and to Fort Tejon, which is within one hundred miles of Fort Yuma, by the mid dle of May. An ollice on the Missouri line will he opened at Springfield to morrow, and the lino will be extended toward Fort Smith as rapidly as possible, so that we may soon have another eight day express by the llutterlield route. hi a , - Mliii in on. The telegraphic dispatch that Mira iio*iihad an agent in New t Irleans endear oring to procure ammunition is confirmed. The correspondent of the Charleston Courier from that city says upwards of fifty kegs of gunpowder were seined by the police a day or two ago, in an open boat at the levee, and, as nobody eluimed them, they were turned over to the Uni ted States authorities. In fact they had been purchased liy Miratuon's agent, hut owing to the unpopularity of his cause, be did nut cure to risk claiming them. —.— ♦ - ■ ■liming of I lie *• I mjn iiilliig trial*,” The iireenvillo (lit. C.) l’atrlot states (hat several incendiary documents, con sisting principally of the ••Impending Crisis,” were admitted to the Hemes in that town on the 2VUh ult., in the pres ence of a large crowd in front of tho Court House door They had been cir culated in that District by one llarrold Wyilie, who had been convicted of the offense and sentenced to oDe year's im prisonment. Contribution* were made to the pile by citiieus of Laurens, Pick ens and Spartanburg, l'bc fuel was ar ranged and the pilo ignited by Bob, a colored boy who seemed to he as much in earnest as auy one present. The New -Vork Kdifora. “Rink,” the New Vork correspondent of tho Charleston Courier, in teresting gossip nboiit the editors of that city. Gerard Halloek, of the Journal of Commerce, is a rich man, his wealth be | ing estimated at $300,000. He und his two sons own three-quarters of the es tablishment, from which they realize ; $30,000 or $40,000 per year. Horace Greely is notrioli by any means. The Tiilmne is a stock concern, a tenth interest in which has been sold for $33,- 000. The Times is not u paying concern like the Herald und Tribune. The proprie tors, however, moke a good thing out it by its influence in stocks, und is an j thorily iu Wall street. The Jirookes of the Lxprcss, are hotii growing rich. They both married money, ■South, one near Richmond and the other in Washington. Jumcs Rrooks besides the estate of his wife, is worth SBO,OOO, and Erastus cannot he worth less than $45,000 to $50,000. The Courier and Enquirer makes con siderable money, hut docs not compare in its profits with the Journal of Com merce. liennutt, of the Herald, is the richest editor in New Vork, his wculih being es timated at $600,000 or more. Robert Rentier, as the world knows, is the journalistic Aladdin of the new world. He has only lo rub his Ledger und out comes tho gold. It is a tight race be tween Runner of the Ledger und Morse of tho Now Vork Observer —both being high in the Editorial financial graduated scale, and beating all the nabobs of the daily press hut Dennett and Halloek. Runner, if lie is not now ahead of Morse, will be soon, for he is not only a post, but a staging driver. The Anil I’lilygamy Hill. The Washington correspondent of the Charleston Courier states that tho bill for the prevention of polygamy in the Territories, and the punishment of it as a crime, originated with the Republicans, and (lie assault now made upon it may be considered as n precedent for a war upon its “ twin relic,” slavery. The hill passed by a majority of more than two tliinls, hut among the negatives were many members of good judgment whose opinions are entitled to respect. Every member from 8. Carolina voted against the bill, and Mr. Kcitt made some strong remarks in opposition to it. Whether it is a judicious measure is questionable. It is regarded us a violent interference with the domestic affairs of a community, and, besides, it is likely to be a dead let ter if it is opposed by the sense of the community. The people of Utah, only a small por tion of whom are practically polygamists, will unite in opposition to tho enforce ment of the measure. The law cannot he enforced without a standing army.— Dcsides, the immigration into the coun try, and the travel ami commerce upon the route through Pike’s Peak, SaULake and Carson's Valley will soon extinguish Mormoniam. What the Senate will do with the bill remains to he seen. It is remarkable that Congress has been so slow to manifest their abhorrence of the vico of polygamy. A nut lier Tornnilo, Tho Canton (Miss.) Citizen records the visit of a terrific and destructive tornado through that county Saturday night the Hist ult. Its course was from West to Fast, and the track was about three hun dred yards wide. It passed over several plantations, unrooting gin houses, mid blowing down negro cabins uud other houses. On the plantation of Judge Shackelford, the tire from the healths of tho cabins burnt ouo of his negroes, tin that of I)r. Money, the dwelling house of Mr. Wills, the overseer, was demolished, two lnrge trees being blown down on it. Avery valuable negro woman was killed ami another severely injured. On this place, also, a large tree was blown across a negro cabin, crushing in the roof, and a large limb penetrated through to tho ground. In this cabin there wore five negroes, and none of them wero injured. Those who visited thesoene of devasta tion, say that largo trees were wrung otl midway, and others were snapped off at the roots, and carried in some instances fifty yards. - P'urthpxr by tho Prince Albort. UPHAM SHEPARD, of the South Carolina Medical College, in a letter addressed to B. M. Rhodes, the proprietor, dated Charleston, January 3,1860, say*: “The two samples examined, as selected by my self front the warehouse of Messrs. Rhett & Rob son, of this city, appear to be. as nearly as possible, identical in their mode of preparation and com position, and the article cannot be too highly com mended for the uniformity of tho mixture in the several ingredients present, and the impalpable fineness of the Phosphate and the Sulphate of Lime. It is tho richest preparation I have yet seen for the Soluble Phosphate, and in this respect cannot well be improved upon. The insoluble earthly ingredient does not appear to be greater than is incident to tho most carefully prepared fertilizer.*-* THE MODE OF APPLICATION IS VERY SIMPLE : either broudeast or in the bill or drill— -100 to 200 pound* per acre. This Mannre does not fire, as is tho case with the Peruvian Guano; but being strictly nourishing, can be used any way tho convenience of the planter may suggest.
