OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF tH* CITY -
Monday nuriitngi Nov- kli, ‘
To Advertlaer*.
Our friends will please hand in their favors as
early in the day as possible, to have them ap
pear the following morning.
sup lr Court.
The fall term of the Superior Court for
Muscogee county will commence its ses
sion to-day. His Honor, Judge Worrell,
will preside, and has arrived in the city.
Death of T. W. Tollman.
We regret to record the death of Mr.
Tbos. W. Tallman, which occurred at his
residence in this city last Saturday after
noon, after an indisposition of two or
three months, by which he was confined
to his house. He was an old citizen of
Columbus, and was connected with the
St. Mary’s Batik during its existence, in
the capacity ofTeller. Mr. lallman was
an honest, upright and most efiicieDt bu
siness man, and by his death the com
munity has lost a useful and public
spirited citizen.
Hon. Jtmei Johnson for Secession,
In the Book of Books we are told that
there is more rejoicing in Heaven over
one sinner that repenteth, than over
ninety and nine righteous persons that
need no repentance. Making due allow
ance for the importance of things tempo
ral compared with things spiritual, and
with the hope of being pardoned the ap
parent irreverence of the comparison,
the rejoicings of a righteous man over
the repentance of ninety-nine sinners
could not have surpassed the gratifica
tion excited Saturday when the presi
dent of the mass meeting announced that
the Hon. James JohnsoD, of this city,
had espoused the cause of secession, and
with Col. Cochran and others, would ad
dress the people at night, and define his
position at length.
Pursuant to the announcement, he
made the opening speech, taking bold
and unequivocal ground in favor of
unconditional secession ; and urged bis
former parly associates to sacrifice their
convictions, as be bad done, for the sake
of union among the people, and the ao
complishment of that desideratum, an in
dependent Southern Confederacy which
would secure to us the equality which is
denied us under the present government.
We regret our inability to present a full
stenographic report of his speech. Dur
ing its delivery someone of the audience
sent him a blue cockade, which an en
thusiastic gentleman pinned to the lapel
of bis coat.
Since the question of secession was
first agitated, Mr. Johnson has been re
garded as the bell-wether of the Union
party in this section of the State, if we
may be allowed the expression. Indeed
his sentiments at one period were re
garded by some as obnoxious and even
dangerous ; and his espousal of the cause
of secession at this time is as surprising
as it is gratifying. He was frequently
interrupted during his remarks by loud
cheers, the waving of hats and handker
chiefs, and other demonstrations, which
evinced the esteem in which he is held as
a citizen of the community. The eloquent
tribute paid by Col. Cochran at the con
clusion of his speech, to the sincerity,
boldness, and the integrity of bis opin
ions, was received with loud cheers by
the audience. Besides the gratification
experienced by Mr. conversion
as a gentleman of talent and ability, it is
especially satisfactory on account of tho
impetus it has given, and will continue to
give, to the glorious cause of the secession
party in Georgia. Y.
‘ Stake a Claim for 91e I”
The following anecdote was related in
substance, by Mr. Yancey, Saturday,
illustrating the nature of the rich terri
tory of which the South has been des
poiled by the North:
Among the deep defiles of the l!oeky
mountains, lately, a small company of
men stood around the new made grave of
a dead companion. With heads uncovered
they listened attentively lo the words of
the preacher as he offered up a prayer.
While in the midst of it, one of the corn
pauy discovered “the color” in the earih
at his feet thrown up to make room for
the remains of the deceased. In a loud
whisper he communicated the rather ex
citing intelligence to his companion. All
heard it, even the clergyman, who, sus
pended his prayer, opened his eyes to sec
the auditory scatter in every direction to
stake olf gold claims. Calling in a loud
voice to stake him off a “claim,” ho re
olosed his eyes, hastily concluded his
prayer, and started off on a run to join
his fellows in securing a claim.
Columbus Soutliei-a Orders,
The Richmod Dispatch says the large
manufacturers of that city are constantly
reoeiving orders from the South for Rich
mond made machinery.
While we rejoice at the withdrawal of
Southern patronage from those who have
enriched themselves at our expense, and
the inoreased prospect of the Richmond
Foundries ; we would at this juncluro be
speak attention to facilities in this re
spect which “Columbus affords. Wo arc
behind no southern city to the extent of
our manufacturing facilities, and, like
Richmond, all wo need are a few of
orders that have hitherto been sent to
the North. We rejoice that there is am
ple patronage to sustain every Foundry
and Manufactory in the South and they
should and will not entertain any other
feeling against each other, than that of
generous rivalry.
From tho Atlanta Intelligencer.
Gen. Semmea.
“ Dulce f.t Decorum est pro Patria
Mori.”—“ It is sweet and glorious to die
for one’s country ” is the prominent sen
timent of the most important political
Ode of the great lyric bard of the Ro
mans. Its spirit huß been caught up by
Oen. Semmes in the letter we publish
below, and its coho will be a sweet note
of sacred musio from one end of the
Southern States to the other. Let us
hope that the right arm of Omnipotence
will protect the gallant aud patriotic
General, and be a tower of defence to our
noble South. Instead of the pleasure of
dying may the patriotic General long en
joy the glory of living under the banner
of our independent Southern Confed
eracy.

bags of your Nitrogonl/.od Superphosphate of
Lime, of your Agents, Messrs. 11. A N. K. Solo
mon, Hamburg, S. C., (who solicited a statement
of its effects.) and applied it to forty acres of my
poorest cotton laud.
This land ison the public road, where its effects
were seou My neighbors, who are acquainted
with the land, were astonished at the luxnriaut
growth of the cotton where I uicd your Super
phosphate. It produced better cotton, and a larger
amount, than on my good laud. le*s work was
needed in making the cotton than on my other
land. N<ot a particle of rust was to be seen where
I applied your Superphosphate, while the rust
prevailed over every other portion of my cotton
crop. Respectfully yours,
