nu. Sun: Permit me to say, in reply to
Convention of the 10th January next.
Respectfully,
JAS. F. BOZEMAN.
Vrtilvkrv. —Those persons who have in con
templation the formation of a Light Artillery
Corps in Columbus, are requested to meet at
the rooms of the Young America Fire Company
nt 7 o’clock, Friday evening, for the purpose of
organization.
Notice. —The members of the Mounted Rifle
Corps of Wynnton will assemble at the Male
Academy, in Wynnton, on Wednesday night,
tiie 28th inst., to elect oflicors and adopt a Con
stitution and By-Laws.
MAYOR'S OFFICE, Nov. 20,1800.
In accordance with the Proclamation of the
Governor of the State of Georgia, I would here
by request the citizens of the city of Columbus,
in view of the distracted state of our country,
to abstain from the usual avocations of the day,
on Wednesday next, and to join with the
Churches of every order to unite in prayer for
wisdom to direct us in this our great calamity.
Given under my hand this 21th day of Novem
ber, 1860. W. S. HOLSTEAD, Mayor.
‘ •
Mo Paper To-Morrow.
In accordance with the proclamation
of the Governor and the request of the
Mayor, that the usual avocations be sus
pended to-day in the city, no paper will
be issued from this Office to-morrow
morning.
The Meeting In Russell.
A meeting of the citizens of Russell
county, Alabama, was held on Monday
last to consult as to the proper course to
pursue in the present crisis, and to give
an expression of sentiment. We are in
formed by a gentleman who was present,
that resolutions favoring secession were
adopted by an overwhelming majority.
The Holman Opera Troupe.
We are informed that the above named
Troupe contemplate giving a series of
entertainments in this city commencing
on Thursday night of the ensuing week.
The papers where they have performed,
speak in very favorable terms of their
exhibitions. We append the following
certificate from Hon. Thoe. R. R. Cobb :
Athkns, Nov. 8, 1860.
I cheerfully state that the Holman
Troupe gave an entertainment in the
Concert Hall of the Lucy Cobb Institute,
for the benefit of the young ladies of that
school. I was present at the exhibition,
and pronounce it very amusing and en
tertaining to the young people, and chaste
and unexceptionable in itself.
TIIOS. R. R. COBB.
Hon. James Johnson.
“Possessed of great abilities and high
character, says the Eufaulal Spirit of the
South, he has for many years dedicated
all to the preservation of the Union, andhaß
fought its battles with a constancy and
courage worthy of a better cause. It is
a most significant and overwhelming in
dication when such a man, whose genius,
daring and ardent temperament united
to make him the very chief of Union
savers, comes out fairly and squarely for
the immediate and separate secession of
the Empire State of the South. Familiar
as we have been for many years with Mr.
Johnson’s opinions, as well as the zeal
and fidelity with which he has adherod to
them through good and through evil re
port, we feel as if the Union had lost its
best friend, and Southern Independence
had won its most determined enemy.”
To tbe Convention.
Eds. Sun: —l notice that Hon. M. J.
Wellborn has been mentioned, with others,
as a suitable delegate to the Convention.
Asa man of enlarged views, of conserva
tive, yet of strong Southern rights feel
ings—as a man thoroughly identified
with the South in interest, and who is a
Christian patriot, and not a partisan, he
is worthy of and will doubtless receive
the support of his fellow citizens, should
his name be placed before them as a
candidate. In this crisis of our political
affairs we need men of firmness, and yet
of firmness tempered with ‘‘wisdom,
moderation and justice.” To such men
we may safely commit the interest of
Georgia without any pledges, and such a
man is the lion. M. J. Wellborn. W.
Trading with Negroes.
Eds Sun : Patrol companies have been
attempting to do their duty in certain
localities, but meu who trade with ne
groes have offered them protection against
said companies, particularly in Utah.—
Utah ii located at the base of what is
known as Wamock’s hill. Its population
consists of free negroes and white peo
ple, some them rendered low by the in
dulgence of bad habits. In that famous
ville is to be found no edifices reared to
the living God, and what is worse, some
of itsinbabitants worship at no shrine, ex
oept filthy lucre, and that to be acquired
by corrupting our negroes, and inducing
them to steal to carry on this illegal
traffic. A patrol company was out in
that ville one night this month. They
saw three negroes go into one of these
groceries after the hour of nine o’clock,
p. m. They ran a negro to a house up
in that vicinity, and one of the company
went to the gate, and attempted to enter,
the woman of the houio came to the door
and said that that negro had protection
there, and that if he did not leave sbe
would shoot him, and fired her pistol in
the air. The negro did not belong to the
woman or her husband, but we suppose
he might have been a good customer. A
number of negroes were found on the
public highway with jugs of whisky in
and about the said Utah. Now these free
negroes are living in rented houses
or houses owned by them, this is all con
trary to a law now on your statute book.
All our laws ought to be enforced now
rigidly. Our safety is to be found not in
good laws only, but in the enforcement
of such laws as we have. The laws are
not defective, but they have not been en
forced ns they should have been ; a
crime among the blacks or whites would
have been less frequent, and we would
now hold our property by a much better
tenure, and our slaves much better sat
isfied. What is the penalty for trading
with slaves ? Why, the law is plain.—
The penalty for selling liquor to slaves
is a fine not less than fifty dollars nor
more than two hundred dollars, and
imprisonment not lesg than ten nor more
than thirty days. Are we furnished with
means to carry out this law? Most as
suredly. Then let the officers of the law
look to it. Citizens of Muscogee, be vigi.
lant. Your laws are being violated, I
may say every night, and all because
your officers have not done their duty.
These are troublous times, and demand
that we should be vigilant.

MAPE’S NITROGENIZED
SUPERPHOSPHATE OF
LIMP] !
Read the following Ijetter.
Newberry, 8. 0., October, 1860
Prof. .1. .1. Masss — Dear Sir: 1 bought twenty
bags of your Nitrogeniv.ecl Superphosphate of
Lime, of your Agents, Messrs. 11. k N. K. Solo
mon, Hamburg, S. G., (who solicited a statement
of its effects,) ami applied it to forty acres of my
poorest cotton laud.
This land isou tbo public road, where its effects
were seen. My neighbors, who uro acquainted
with the land, were astonished at the luxuriant
growth of the cotton where I used your Super
phosphate. It produced better cotton, and a larger
amount, than on my good land, loss work was
uuoded in making the cotton than on my other
land. Not a partich of rust was to be seen where
I applied jour Superphosphate, while the rust
prevailod over every other portion of my cotton
crop. Respectfully yours,
DAVID PAYNE.
Note.— Mr. Payne’s good land comparos favora
bly with the boat cotton lands on the Saluda river.
The Saluda bottoms are proverbial for producing
largo quantities of cotton.
