Hurned its regular rounds.
Members of the Columbian Lodge see
Jiotico of the Secretary,
Mis. Dessau makes an announcement j
us interest to the ladies. Her new sup- i
ply of Bonnets &c., merit au early in
appetion.
Personal.
Capt. J. M. Cary and Lieutenant Wm.
Welborn of Barbour county, Alabama,
passed through here yesterday, for Mont
gomery. They have been engaged for
some time past in the recruiting service
and received orders to discontinue and
report themselves at headquarters.
Tlie Colors Fljlug.
The “broad bars” of the colors of the
Confederate States were hoisted over the
Eagle Factory yesterday, in honor of the
reported bombardment of Fort Sumter,
and are floating proudly and gracefully
in the breeze. It is a magnificent flag,
being twenty-five by fifteen feet, the
largest dimensions.
Col. Thompson Karle.
The announcement of this gentleman
of Bussell county, for Brigadier General,
will be found in this issue. lie is one of
South Carolina’s most chivalrous sous
and removed to Alabama several years
since. He has the advantage of consid
erable military experience and is well
qualified for the position lor which he is
announced as a candidate.
Lecture on China.
Rev. A. B. Cabaniss, returned Mission
ary from China, is announced to preach
to-morrow, at the Baptist Church in the
forenoon, and at night deliver a lecture on
the religious condition of the Chinese,
and exhibit a number of their idols.
Mr. Cabauiss recently delivered several
lectures iu Montgomery, which were
highly spoken of by tho press of that
city. Judging from their notices, we
feel confident that the lecture as well as
the forenoon service will be highly inter
esting and instructive.

The Columbus JSkilitarj-.
The City Light Guards and Columbus
Guards held meetings yesterday, and
tendered their services to Gov. Brown
under the new requisition made by Presi
dent Davis. The tender we believe, was
made by telegraph. Columbus has fur
nished one company for active service,
aud the remainder have renewed more
than once the proffer of their services.
As we understand it, the requisition
of the President is conditional, and the
contingent furnished by each State, will
not be called immediately into service,
but hold themselves in readiness to move
at the earliest notice from the Govern'
incut.
Excitement Yesterday.
The community were startled yesterday
morning by tho firing of canuon three
successive times, which was the signal
agreed upon the day previous, of the com
mencement of the attack on Fort Sumter.
It had also been agreed that seven guns
be fired if it should be evacuated. The
long pause after the third report soon
relieved the public suspense and confirm
ed the prevailing opinion that an attack
was made.
Groups of individuals might be seen
gathered at the corners of the streets and
places of public resort, discussing the
all-important topic. And all we believe,
relished the news not a little, and rejoiced
rather than otherwise, that a period had
been put to the treacherous course of the
Lincoln Administration towards the Con
federate States.
Want No. 5,
Who is there amongst us so devoid of a
proper appreciation of delicacies, and
who has not often wished for an eatable
bit of Mutton or Kid ? If any such thero
be in our midst, let them speak and say
how often they get any from our butch
ors. Mind, Ido not blame them for not
selling it, for they would gladly furnish
us, if they could but buy the live mate
rial. How simple a thing is it for a small
farmer to raise a few head of Sheep or
Goats, and fatten them for market, and
then how easy the shearing off the sur
plus Wool from the Sheep, drive them to
our nearest butcher pen and receive from
$8 to $4 cash per head for them, and
possibly more. The same of Goats, which
grow up around the farm, seemingly by
“spontaneous combustion,” easier raised
than hogs, yet hardly a Kid do we ever
find in market. Here is a line for prof
itable labor for the farmer of small means.
QUID NUNC.
Meadows.
Somehow the impression has gotten out
amongst our people that the various
Meadow Grasses, Clover particularly,
cannot be successfully grown in this lat
itude. If any one who has indulged in
this opinion will take the trouble to visit
the grounds of the Baptist Church, in
this city, fhey will have practical demon
stration that such an opinion is unfound
ed, and be convinced that as fine clover
fields may be grown in Muscogee county
as any where. The clover and other
meadow grass growing on these grounds
are in the main from seed sown the past
winter, and are up to this time growing
beautifully, and exceedingly tempting to
the poor half-starved cows of our city.
A good coat of plaster as suggested by
the reverend gentleman who has super
intended the sowing of this grass, would
have made these grounds rival the famed
meadows of Kentucky. Consider what a
luxurious pasture our large commons
would make if sown iu red or white clo
ver, and then decide, ye cow owners, if
it would not pay for each of you to buy
and sow at random thereon a half bushel
of clover and other grasses.
Lovell, tho Animal Trainer, aud Haller,
the Magician, will visit this city in a few
days Due notice of their arrival will

Mr. Pieston’s Resolution.
The following is tho resolution adopted
by the Virginia Convention, appointing
three commissioners to wait upou the
President at Washington':
Whereat, in tho opiuiou ot this Con
ventiou, tho uncertainty which prevails
iu the public mind as to tbe policy which
the Federal Executive intends to pursue
towards tho seceded States, is extremely
iujuriousto the industrial and commer
cial interests of tho country, tends to
keep up au excitement which is unfavor
able to the adjustment of pending ditli
culties, and threatens a disturbance of
the public peace : Therefore,
Resolved, That a committee of three
delegates be appointed by this Conven
tion to wait upon the l’resident of the :
United States, present to him this pre
amble and resolution, and respectfully :

vention the policy which the authorities
of the Federal Government intend to pur

from Pensacola.
A letter to the Daily Times, of the 12th,
says :
Geu. Bragg contemplates erecting three
more sand batteries, in which event the
cannon from Fort Mcßao will be tugged
along at the rate of six hundred yards a
day, aud a distance of two miles to go
over. This work requires patience, us
well as strength and energy, to endure
it.
Slemmer is cut off from receiving sup
plies at our hands, and he now sends to
Havana. The Federal troops have poor
fare on board tbe steamers, as well us
Pickens, aud now aud then we hear of
their men complaining aud being dis
couraged.
For Brigadier General.

As n general altorativi and blood purifier,it bus
no equal, and does not fail to cure Scrotum,
Secondary Syphilis, Glandular Swellings, Mano
