Sun: To have listened to the
boastful and vengeful threats of our
Northern foe, otic would have thought
that all our cities from the Potomac to

been laid in ashos, or reduced to sorvi

bones, neither do threats always conquer.
Consequently few have yet yielded up

Serr<*t Sessions—Emmtssarles from
the North-West. Ac.
The Richmond correspondent of the
Savannah Republican, under date of
February, 10th,says:
The Congress has spent a good deal
of time recently in secret session. The
subject of consideration is reported to
be, in part, our relations with the North-
Western States, but with what truth, ,
aut unable to say. there tin ano j
doubt that emtnisaaries have be. n sent ,
into the Confederacy by persons connec
ted with the I'cace party in the In.ted
I Stoles One at least from the Norfh
; W est is known to have visited Richmond
j lately. Boon after the departure of this
individual, Mr. Sparrow", Chairman of
the Committee on Military Affairs in
the Senate, introduced a preamble and
resolution, in which the declarations -et
forth in the act of the Provisional Con
gress, approved Feb. 20th, 1861, is reit
erated, to-wit : that “the peaceful nav
igation of the Mississippi River shall be
tree to the citizens of any of the .Stales
upon its borders, or upon the borders of
its tributaries.” This action of the
Chairman of Military Committee is sig-
nificant.
If what we hear in relation to the ac
tion of the Legislatures of Ohio, Indi
ana and Illinois, he true, then the war is
approaching its end. One or more hat
ties may lie fought near \ ieksburg, Sa
vannah and Charleston, and a Mate of
hostilities may contiuueto exist lor some
time to come; but it the .States just
named arc really determined to with
draw from the contest, and to form 1 1
treaty of allianco with us, offensive and
defensive, ad the telegraph announces to
be true, then the heavy lighting will
hoou be over, and speculators bad better
dispose of their wares; for the dove is
already returning to the ark with the
"olive leaf in her mouth.” And yet this
consoling fact, if fact it. be, should not
induce the Government or the people to
relax in the least their efforts to defeat
ami drive back the invaders. The faster
and harder our blows fall, the quicker
and more satisfactory will be the action
of the North-West. If we become su
pine and indifferent, and are defeated.in
battle, wc shall not only weaken our
selves, but strike down the hands of the
advocates of pence beyond the Ohio and
indefinitely prolong the war. Whatever
be the intentions of the people of the
North-West, therefore, and whatever the
result of the movements they are repor
ted to have initiated, their success, if
they be our friends, and their failure, it
they be our enemies, depend alike upon
tin' vigor and resolutions with which we
act.
It would seem, in view of the late in
telligence, that the prediction that the
success of Democrats and conservatives
in the late Federal elections would par
alyze the Government and demoralize the
army, is about to be verified. It is not
probable, under any' circumstances, if
wo do our duly and foreign powers do
not interfere in behalf of emancipation,
that the war will last beyond the year.
The secession of Ohio, Indiana and Illi
nois, if ,iesolved upon, will be followed,
of necessity, by the withdrawal of Michi
gan, lowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and
Kansas. The geographical position of
the latter States will determine their
political relations in the future.

I’i.ni JirosoN, Feb. 17. —Capt. Den
son, From lied river, brings the informa
tion of the capture of the Federal steam
er Queen of the West, at Gordon’s Land
ing. (Fort Taylor.) on Ked river.
Ihe Queen of the West had captured
the Fonfederale transport Fra, No. 5,
and forced her pilot, John Burke, to
take tho wheel, ordering him to take tho
gunboat t o our batteries. Burke feigned
fear, but finally took the wheel under
guard. Upon nearing our batteries, he
told the Vunkees they were fifteen miles
below them, and immediately putting
close in, she received a shot, which
broke her steam pipe, disabling the boat.
The Yankees were totally unprepared for
a fight, and suspected no danger. Burke
jumped overboard and swam ashore, and
the crew made their escape, with the ex
ception of thirteen, who fell into oui
hands. The crew subsequently got
aboard the Yankee boat DcSota, and
with two hundred stolen negroes effected
their escape.
The Queen of the West is now in the
poscessioii of the Confederates, and will
be towed to a place of safety for re
pairs.
li is reported that the \ nnkee gunboat
Indianok hail gone up Ked river to re
capture the Queen of the West.
The conduct of Burke elicits the high
est encomiums.
Later intelligence states that the 0. S.
steamer Webb is closely pursuing the
captured steamer Fra. The Fra is dis
abled in one of her wheels.
The Queen of the West is but slightly
injured, and will soon be in lighting trim
under Confederate colors.
There is positive information that the
transport DeSolo was burned by the
Fed era Is to prevent her falling into the
hands of the Confederates.
