Infidel Statesmen.
It is a remarkable fact that all the ad
vocates of ahsolutifcin, have been disbe
lievers in the authenticity of the Bible.
They have all been, cither materialists,
free-thinkers, or deists. Whether they
assigned absolutism to an autocrat or to
that terrible monster, a Mind and reck
less majority, they have been tinctured
with infidelity. Thos. Jefferson, 'hough
a professed democrat, was an advocate
of absolutism ; likewise, though a man
of irreproachable moral character, he
was an infidel The results of his teach
ings, and the extent of his hftHc<ul in
fluence, like that of the leaders of the
first French revolution, ib now before us.
He was a Jacobin in politics His theory
proved a failure in France, as it will in
America. No Government, however in
geniously devised, can he permanent, or
gurrantcc security to its subjects, that
is based upon that absurdly false and
infidel theorem that “all men are*horn
free and equal,” or which rficognizes its
corollary that “all governments derive
their power from the consent ot the gov
erned. ” » n miclj maxims are in direct an
tagonism with the Ltiblc, and therefore
not only false, hut mischievous.
It may take many years for the popu
lar mind in .America to divest itself ol
Jefferson’s dangerous heresies. The
present generation may never witness
such an event ; hut it is nevertheless cer
tain that Republicanism has been orer
donc, and that a reaction is now taking
place. It becomes us now to guard
against that other extreme in the science
of Government to which the Hebrews
resorted when they clamored for the abo- ,

is just now more formidable than it ever

Since there is not the remolcsf proba
bility of French intervention, so long as
the war continues at its present status,
the report of the Yankee military com
mittee cannot be presumed to contem
plate such an event. France has no
doubt already obtained all she wants.
She will doubtless make an easy con

Does he want to form an alliance with

assurance has the Yankee nation that
such a proposition would be accepted if
made ?
If, as Seward says, the rebellion is al

judging from the report ot' the Senate

The Richmond Dispatch makes up the
following summary from the New York
World and Herald, of the 10th :
JOHN VAN liURKN’s SPEECH. '
D. A. Mahoney, who succeeds Roileau
by appointment of the Democratic Cen
tral Club of Philadelphia, writes an ar
Hole in the New York World, of the 14th,
on John Van Huron's speech, in which he
says:
“It he (V. 15.) represents the Democ
racy in New York, lliero is a vast chasm
between them and the democracy of the-
Northwest, who ‘arc J'or a riyaruu* prose
cution of peace,’ who believe lhe war is
prosecuted for the purpose of perpetuat
ing the existence of the Abolition Repub
lican party, and as one means for the
subjugation of the Southern Slates and
people. Woof the Northwest are not in
tavor of such purposes. We of the
Northwest, especially those of Illinois,
Indiana, and lowa, are opposed to furth
er prosecution of the existing wav.—
Some of us never believed the object of
llie war was the restoration of the Union.
Why should that.parly become the spe
cial guardian of that compact, which is
denounced as a covenant, with death and
a league with hull 7 My object is to
produce harmony between the conserva
tive element of New York and the North
west. Does not Mr. Van lim-en repre
sent the conservative sentiment of New
\ ink in lav or of a vigorous prosecution
of the war for the purpose indicated by
ilie emancipation proclamation, acts of
confiscation, and eom-nmita lit note of
plunder, which have become character
istic of almost every Abolition am Re
publican office holder and contractor ?
The World, commenting on this article
or communication of Mahoney, says:
"The West, is undergoing an entire revul
sion of feeling, and it is the most, alarm
ing sign of the times.” It, thinks the
West despairs of success of the Union
arms, and has no heart for the interniin.
aide war. The pressure of pecuniary
interests has caused this powerful reac
tion. It' Abolition policy is successful,
the resulting prostration of Southern in
dustry would dry up the main source of
Western prosperity. TUo West "went in"
f,,v n short, vigorous, and successful war,
which would permanently restore, not
destroy, their best market After sacri
ficing the value of their crops for two
years, and seeing less chance than ever
of restoring the Union as it was, large
masses of her people have become advo
cates of peace. Feeling is vigorous and
earnest, and is rapidly spreading over
all that portion on the great, rivers,—
I I 1 e World fears, if the administration’s
policy is not speedily changed, the ca
lamities of the next six months will be
more serious and potontous than any the
country has yet experienced.
The World lias the following editorial
roiunrks about Van Huron's speech :
Uet the umaueipation proclamation,
which is already a demonstrated failure,
be revoked ; let the door be kept open
lor a return of rebels by a standing of
fer of amnesty whenever they will sub
mit to. the Constitution; let meu of ca
pacity be put in the War and Xavy
t'epavlmonts, and the great body of the
democratic party will cheerfully support
the Administration until it can be con
stitutionally superseded by anew I’resi
dent i;d elect ion; if it will put llanks in
the War Department and restore MeClel
lan to his position ns General in Chief;
discard the Abolition scheme and place
the direction of the war in the most ca
pable hands. The doom of the Union is
scaled unless the above policy is re
nounced : for, if there is anything abso
lutely m*rtain. it is that the democrats
who will cheerfully tight for the Union,
wilt not support nil Abolition war.
