Remote to the Country.
It is a principle, apparent to every
mind, that, when any article is much in
demand, its price is greatly enhanced.
Wherever, too, large numbers of people
congregate, there is a pressing liecd for
provisions, lienee, in cities, articles of
-food alwayß obtain a higher price than
in the country. The scarcity of produc
ers, and n large multitude of consumers,
also largely increases the cost of every
necessary of lift. These are truths,
patent to every mind that, for a moment,
can reflect.
Every one must see that our cities arc
too much crowded. The fabulous prices,
offered here lor labor, possesses a fasci
nation which few can resist. The poor
dream of fortunes won by a few hours of
toil, and thither they wend in crowds.
They heed not tho fact that in towns the
superior value of all that supports lift
will fast consume every cent of their
hard earned wages.
Slight thought will convince any ouo
that provisions arc cheaper in the coun
try than in town, that residence mid
pure and bracing airs is far more pleas
ant and desirable, and that in proportion
labor is much more remunerative ir. tho
former than the latter locality.
We must have more producers, if we
would buy cheaply. Then let all, who
can, seek the refreshing haunts of coun
try life. Take your negroes from town,
where they loaru naught save vice and
corruption. Every acre ofland planted
this year will add so much to our coun
try’s strength, aud your negroes will
make far more iuthe corn held than they
possibly can, acquiring the meanness of
the vilest of the vile. Let agriculture be
vigorously pushed forward aud we’ll no
longer complain of a dearth and scarci
ty. Public utility, and private good
alike require that all the labor possible,
and every person who can, should re
move from our towns and cities.
Our land forces made an attack, on
the 25!1i Dec., on the ship of war Mar
blehead, iu Stono river. The Marblehead
has ten heavy guns, mostly 11-inch ri
fles. Yankee official dispatches say,
“we were struck !’>o times, every shot
pftHHing through the ship or masts, cov
ering the deck with splinters and blood.
* * * This is the severest light ex
perienced since the taking of Port Itoy
nl. Our proporlion of killed and wound*
ed is one in twelve.”
——■ ♦
At the request of the Commissary of
that district, that the people should as
semble aud determine at wlmt prices
llioy were willing to sell tlicir surplus
provisions to the government, the plan
ters of Monroe county held a large
meeting iu Forsyth, and determined that
the people of said county ought to sell
their leading products at the following
rates, (o-wit:
Corn, at $2 50 per bushel,
Wheat, at 5 00 “
Bacon, at 1 00 per pound,
Butter, at 40 cts “
l.ard, at I 00 “
Fodder, at 2 00 per hundred,
Oats, at 1 00 per bushel.

A Gallant CoNEKUKHA i't:. --Tho Rock

Private James Shryock, of McNeill’s
Partisan Rangers, had a bout with three
Yankee troopers, on the Valley Turn
pike, about a mile south of Harrison
burg, on Sunday morning, the 20tli of
December, which handsomely illustrated
his bravery and daring. Shryock had
shot a Yankee at tho north end of the
town, when he was pursued by Ihree
other Yankees, who overtook him at the
101 l gate south of Harrisonburg. At Ihis
point he made a stand, solitary and
alone, nml determined to give tho odds
agaiust which he had to contend the
best light that was in him. lie here
discharged live shots in the face of (he
three who were after him, and then suc
ceeded in escaping from their grasp,
although they wore sure lie was tlicir
prisoner. Ho made an effort to rally
four other Confederates to the rescue, in
which case he thinks he could have turn
ed the tables upon the pursuers; but the ,
others, too intent upon securing their
own safely, tied and left Shryock alone.
Previous to this engagement with the
enemy, Shryock had been scouting for
twenty-four hours without being out of
tho saddle; and side by side with his
commander, Capt. McNeill, when that
daring chieftain was pressing the enemy
in flight through Harrisonburg. Shryock
is a native of Winchester, and ns this
passage at arms with the Yankees proves,
a very gallant soldier.

A Desi'eratk Struggle for Lint.—-
A lew days ago a frightful accident oc

some mischance his coat caught one of
tho cog wheels, and, but for tho rare
courage and self possession he showed,
he would have been dragged bodily be

death. As it. was. ho pulled with all
his might to resist tho power of tho ma

not give away, and tho arm was, there
fore, drawn iu among the machinery,
and was ground and crushed above tho
elbow. The only person in the mill,
besides Mr. Saddington, was his appren

works. This was done instautly, and
tho courageous man then called for a
knife, and, on its being brought to him,
lie attempted lo liberate himself by bev

but the knife was tuu dull and jagged
for the work, and it had to bo given

It was then handed hack, and llie heroic

All men ate philosophers—says

acting to Mademoiselle de I.ivry, but
who soon returns his lessons. Every

is not a man. A poet has said : “ God

Btsif" The following paragraphs from a
Memphis paper of an old date are very
refreshing, as far us they go :
The Fanny and Welcome both came
up from New Orleans, and proceeded to
St. Louis. They were both fired into by
gueritlasp-ihe Welcome, three limes —
aod their appearance indicated that the
firing was quite accurate, but fortun.
ately no one was injured on the Wel
come. Two persons were Bligbtly wound
ed on tbe Fanny. They were attacked
at Waterproof. The Brazil was fired
into at the same place, aud one man
severely wounded. The Fanny had quite
a quantity of sugar and a tew bales of
cotton.
The .(. Cv Swan was tired into on her
recent passage to New Orleans, half a
mile below the mouth of Red river, al
though she was in range of the gunboats
lying at the mouth of tho river, and also
convoyed by a gunboat. It is said that
the guerrillas paid no attention to the
gunboats. Several bullets struck the
boat, and an ox was killed on the lower
guard, but fortunately no person was
injured.
The Emerald, which came up yesler
day, bore several marks made by shells.
—She anchored Immediately in tront of
the battery before they opened upon
her. But one man was slightly injured
by a piece of shell.
