By direction of Quartermaster General I have
chartered the steamboat Marianna, to run between
this city and obstructions.
Officers of this and other departments having
Government property to ship, either up or down
the river, will make known the fact to Capt. 11.

by Government boat.
Transportation for Soldiers, us tor as practicable,
will be tarnished on steamer Marianna.

Attack on Mobile.—An attack on
Mobile is confidently expected. With an
entrenched camp at Pascagoula, and n
depot of supplies r»t Ship Island, only
40 miles intervene between the point of
attack and base oi supplies. The sailing
of a’large “fleet aloug the Southern coast,
and extensive preparations at Ship Is
land, show that danger is imminent. —
Both the Advertiser and the Tribune ad
vise the withdrawal from the city of all
non-combatants. Maj. Gen. Maury, and
Brig Gen. Cockrell, reviewed the troops
on the 18th. The people are buoyant,
hopeful aud confideut.

Substitute Men — Beauregard's Com
missary—Meat Short in the Enemy's
Camp — Gen. Jlenninysen, and c., ,j c.
Richmond, Jan. 16, 1864.
While Congress is piddling and pro
crastinating over the currency bill, Mr.
Memmingcr is employing additional
presses to print the dates in red ifik on
his notes, which are now issued at the
rate of nearly four millions a day. This
morning the job presses of the newspa
per offices were called into requisition.
This looks more like repudiation than
redemption.
The--gentleman from Georgia, who,
according to Mr. Foote, “adores the
President,” wants him to have the power
of suspending the habeas corpus in all
the cities, towns nnd military districts—
that is to say, over the whole country—
precisely the despotic power Linooln
now lias. The measure will be misera
bly defeated. Mr. Uartrell’s friends, at
least such of them as have any sense or
patriotism, must feel intensely sorry and
ashamed.
Some conscripts are bejng gathered
in, but the way of the substituted men is
being smoothed. Numbers of them here
have found soft places in the newly
organized “mounted guard,” intended
for city defence, aud which, it is to he
hoped, will check the reign of terror the
burglars have inaugurated. Other sub
stituted men have had a meeting and
made a pony purse of $26,000, with
which Cramp, Lyons and Randolph arc
to be employed to test the legality of the
matter.
Beauregard telegraphs ilmi some of liis
troops have been without meat for five
days, and lays Uie blame on his Commis
sary, a relative of Northrop or his wife.
This person, who has even less fitness
for his ollice than Norlhrvp, has been
guilty of the gravest corr uption. Charg
es preferred against him by Beauregard
were hid away in the pigeon holes oftllo
war office and no notice taken of them.
When Senator Orr inquired for them, he
was told lie could not see them without
a special order front the Secretary of
War. S6 outrageous was the transaction
that one of Northrop’s own men, who is
personalty very friendly to him, has been
hoard to declare that history never
furnished a more decided instance of
official protection of a convicted crimi
nal. .
If our troops suffer, it is a consolation
to know that the enemy are little better
off. Two Generals now here, one from
Lee’s army, the other from Lougstrect’n,
unite in affirming that prisoners lately
captured confess they rarely get meat.
This is confirmed by the report of a ser
vant captitfled in the retreat from Knox
ville and confined there for some weeks
before he escaped and returned to bis
master, a colonel in Longstreei’s com
maud, lie Bays he liad no meat the
whole time he was with the Yankees,
hut coffee and sugar three times a day.
Os the hundred wagons captured at
Beau's fruition, not one coutaiued uny
meat. Ho we need not be scared, for
our enemies have troubles as well as our
selves.
Qen. llenuingseu, who had the mis
fortune to send in an estimate of the
material of war which would be necessa
ry to begin our first campaign with, and
which Mr. lfavis sneered at, has joined
Morgan’s cavalry a* a private, For some
time past he has been engaged in writing
a history of the war, a task for which he
is eminently competent, being one of the
best writers in the Confederacy, l’ity
his military experience and taieat are
despised by the authorities. I’an.

The steamer Wm. Wallace, which ar
rived lit Memphis on the 16lh, brings
later and interesting news from below.
She reports that tho Confederates,
4,000 strong, with six pieces of artillery,
under Ross, have been committing dep
redations aloug the Mississippi river;
aud 2,000 tnoro, under Bowie, on the
Arkansas side, acting in concert. Both
banks are picketed by them For the pur

some instances their pickets extend
within half a mile of tho Union troops.
Hess had a fight near Bolivar I.ending
on the Ist iust., with Iho (Yankee) Mis
sissippi Colored Regiment, under Col.
Osband. The result of the fight is uti.
known, but the writer predicts that tlic
negro regiment came out second
best, as they crossed the river to the
Arkansas shore.
Several boats have been fired into
lately. On tho 6th, thirty shots were
fired at the steamer Delta, three taking
effect. One tore otf the rudder ; one
exploded in the cabin, wounding a nig
ger, and doing considerable damage.
The boat escaped.
Several shots were fired at the ram

The Nashville Dispatch contains a
terrible account of the suffering of the
citizens south and east of Murfreesboro,
without food or clothing, and suggests
to the military authorities the establish
ment of a home for llte destitute in the
neighborhood of Stevenson.
The New Y’ork Times has an account
of the mutiny at Fort Jackson. It grew
out of Col. Benedict’s asking ten negroes
coining in from beyond Ibe lines their
authority for leaving. They answered
insolently, nnd he seizing a whip, com
menced lashing them, and a revolt en
sued. Ono hundred negroes seized
loaded guns and fired on the Union
troops wildly, most of the shots ranging
too high. No one is reported hurt. The
rioters held possession of the camp all
day and night. The next day moral
force prevailed. The ringleaders were
arrested, and were tried by court mar
tial. The writer attaches the blame to
Adj. Gen. Thomas, whose indiscreet
speeches gave the negroes nil exalted
idea of their position. An Ohio regi
ment has been ordered to camp near
Ilie Fort to provide nguinst a recurrence
of revolt.

Tartar Marriages.— A writer says,
in describing the peculiarities of the
marriage ceremony in Tailary, that the
preliminaries being settled, the nuptials
arc celebrated in the following manner :
The bride, covered with a veil, having
hid herself for some time behind a screen
in the room, comes forth and walks
around with a grave nnd solemn gait,
while some young girls bring her bread
and honey ; the bridegroom quickly en
ters, kisses her and exchanges rings,
after which she bears the name of he -
frothed girl. She then returns behind
the screen, when the married women put
on her the “ cap of a matron,” which is
much handsomer and is supposed lo be
more fascinating than that which she
wore before the betrothal. In the eve
ning, when the bride und bridegroom
are about retiring, the lady is obliged to
pull off her husband’s boots, as a sign of
her subject ion to his will ! If the hus
band becomes dissatisfied with his wife,
he needs but. tear olf her “cap of a ma
tron,” and t he sign is a complete divorce.
The Indy then immediately returns to
her father’s bouse, where she is received
with kindness. From this if appears
that if much easier lo get rid of than
catch a Tartar! If the cap tearing could
be recognised as a legal divorce in our
country, what a destruction of lace and
muslin would ensue !

Interesting Discovert at
A Naples letter has the following: *<a
very interesting discovery has been made
by M. Fiorelli, the inspector of the px
i cavations at I’ouipeii. While digging
aJ the depth of from eight to ten feet
the Pickaxe struck into a little mass o?
coins and jewels. M. Fiorelli then
coutimlL’d the excavation with the great
est care, if ninving the earth grain by
grain,'and after some hours labor, was
rewarded by the discovery in the hard
ened nobes of the perfect mould of a man
in a lying po.dure, tho skin of which
hud dried up, but Ihc skeleton remained
intact. M. Fiorelli caused Plaster of
Paris to be prooured in the form of the
| Pompeiian, and the casting succeeded
perfectly with the exception of two frag
ments ot an arm and a leg where the
mould was incomplete. The east of the
man is of the greatest precision; the
moustache, the hair, the folds of the
i dress, and the sandals are admirably de
fined. The famous question of the
Thesnrum of Gronovious and Grevius is
now decided ; the Romans did wear
drawers. Also archaeologists will be de- -
lighted at discovering the manner in
which the ancients fastened their san*
dills, and at seeing the heel of a shoe
completely protected with iron.”—Galig

A Si’iritkd Woman.—When the Y'an
kees were at ltogcrsvillc, Tcnn., a short
time since, they arrested a shoemaker,
who ii well known as “old Harry,” aud
confined him in the guard hose. His
wife, as clever and industrious a woman
as .ever lived, has borne him ten likely
sons. The worthy couple have been
“pegging away” lor tunny years to raise
their children properly, and hence they
have accumulated but little of thisworld’s
goods. Mrs. Harry called upon her hus
band at the guard room where he wa#sur
rouuded by the officer of the day and a
guard. She upon seeing her liege lord,
asked him, ‘Soyouare in here, are you V
Harry responded affirmatively. ’Well,
you’re not going take the oath, are you?’
asked alio with tlushcd check. ‘No! I’ve
no notion of it.’ responded Harry, with
clenched teeth, and a defiant, air. “I’d
rather see your last end —seo you rot
first, than hear of you taking (hat oath ;
I can take care of the boys," said Mrs.
Harry.
The officer of the day then ordered her
away, telling her that her language was
insulting to him and his men. Stepping
back with erect form and noble mien,
i he heroic woman shook her hnnd in his
face, and told him that she was raising
ten fine boys to hate and tight such des
picable wretches as he and his men were,
to the bitter end.
