Richmond, Jan. 19, IS-G 4.
Tbe two Houses have swapped bills,
tbe Semite taking tbe currency bill
wbicb bas passed (be House aud ibe
House tbe military bill wbicb bas passed
the Senate. lam told that tbe people
are to be laxed lo their hearts’ content
aud Confederate notes lo be razeed at
ihe rale of 5 per cent a. mouth, but
whether the latter clause really exists iu
tbe House bill, and what other foal ores it
may embrace, is uncertain. The Senate
will hardly concur in the financial ideas
of tbuAlouse, and there will be a confer
ence committee, doubtless.
With regard to tbe military bill, as it
passed lhc Senate, I can only say tihaton
Saturday last, the newspaper znetz were
much elated by the report that tbe> status
of existing papers was to remain un
changed. But ta-day it is stated that
certain Senators have permitted it to be
made known that the bill contemplates
the exemption of only one editor id each
newspaper, who was snob in. 186i£, and
as many journeymen printers us be or
the proprietors may swear to be nooessa
ry to carrying ou the paper. This will
suit tbe weeklies, but {Jay Uob nidi the
dailies, which can no more be edited by
one Ilian than a gig can go with one
wheel. The bill will probably be modi
fied in tbe House.
Tho trial of Forde, for tbe muider of
Dixon, began yesterday. Tbe prisoner
bas able counsel —Burnett, Sinu.is aud
Humphrey Marshall, of Kentucky, aud
Crump and perhaps Randolph (Hx See.
of War) and Lyons. The prosuoutiou
have employed Dougherty, ol your State,
whose vast legal acquirements an and im
perturbability will put tbe defense ou its
best mettle. Our great criminal lawyer
is said to have given a magnificent sup
per at “Tbe Oriental,” a few days ago,
to members of the Cabinet and rubers;
but whether tbe etitertaintainnii.nt was
iu tbe iuteresi of Forde or Mrs. Allan,
or merely a generous compliment, ffias
not been elucidated.
The injunction of secresy yesterday
was removed from a mailer which wil)
excite some comment. Sixteen months
non. the President asked the advice of
the Senate as to the propriety of .sending
in (be nominations of certain officers,
(among them, Mr. Oruger, comptroller of
the treasury, whose firmness in regard
to Mr. Benjamin’s acounts, wbicb had
been overdrawn, bad caused tbe Presi
dent to take this step. Tbe Senate una
nimously decided that it was proper to
scuu iu the nominations. Yet for sixteen
months after asking and receiving the
advice of Ibe Senate, the Executive has
held Cruger aud others in durance vile,
the sword of Damocles smspendoJ over
tfiidr beads, and their positions tenable
only on the peualty of good behavior. :
Ottger’s nomination fcas just befu Eent

Surgeon Gen-ral’s, all the AndilecV and,
I it is stated, Judge Ha’yburtojt’s, a re still
I held iu abeyance. 'Pas.
