Somebody’s Baby.
Ia the cellar, the first door north ci the
Banks Building, on Broad street, a negro
woman was found a few days sinoe with
a youag white babe which was said to
have been bora on Friday night- She
endeaveroed to conceal it, and when fouud
out at last, said the child had been given
her to carry away, as in a few days she
was going to Mississippi- She would not
tell the child’s parents. A devout Catho
lie woman desired to have the child ohris
tenod, but the negro would not let her have
it for a sufficient time. The officers com
menced questioning her, but she gave
them the slip and baa not since been heard
of. The negro was evidently well paid to
take care of the infant and to keep ail se

Monday afternoon, the Uchee, with a
heavy freight for Columbus, from thobark
Elba, at Apalachicola, struck a snag at
Uckae Shoals, soma twenty miles below
here, and sank in lew water. About half
of the heavy groceries in the hold, such
as sugar, etc , are much damaged. The
boat was lightened and managed to get to
JSloDougald’s Landing, where she now
lies. Most of the rope, coffee and articles
that could be moved are safe- She had j
on board a heavy freight. The Swan is ]
expeoted to bring it up. The boat is not
injured.
Just after the boat struck, Capt. Kliak
ordered the negroes immediately to work.
One absolutely refused Words eaaued,
and at last the negro seized a billet of
wood and was advancing when the cap*
tain fired at him with a gun and killed
him. Then the orew worked with a will.
Captain Klink reported himself to the
military authorities yesterday morning.
They appointed ten o'clock this morning
as tb9 hour for the trial, but permitted
the captain to go at liberty. The negro
killed was named Lewis, and formerly
belonged to Mr. Bms.

cepting the nomicaUr.n tendered, and
avowing their intention, if elected, to uid
in restoring the Stale to her former status
in the Union, by observing the conditions
imposed by the Federal Administration.
Each declared that the work which the

unmistakable ; that it was called upon Mir-*

law ot the Stale required by our present
condition, which had to be conformed to
the Constitution and laws of the United
