Outrage by a Negro.
We are told cf one of the greatest out
rages that we have yet hoard of in Colum
bus. Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Mnnob
w»b taking care of the room of a lady,
who lives in rear of tho Perry House.
Mrs. M. had stepped out far a few mo
ments and when returning with a little
child in her arms, she heard a noise un
der the bed. Raising the curtains, shs
beheld a large buck negro, who had been
searching the tranks near him. He in
stantly sprang forward, a large open
knife in his hand, slammed the door to so
violently as to break the lock, and placing
a hand upon the lady’s mouth, at the same
time striking the child, swore most horri
bly that if she uttered a word he would
bill her on the spot. She was so frighten
ed that he forced her to swear she would
not say anything about the affair. He
iett hurriedly and joined another negro
who: was waiting for him. Terror in
duced the lady to keep silent until he
was gone, and she knows not in conse
quence who they were. Cannot suoh out
rages find a proper punishment ? Must
negroes rob in day light f
Cotton.
On yesterday cotton was maintaining a
stand still. Romo buyers have been eu
d a-oringto depress Ihe market, but thus
far they have been usieuomastul. Buyers
took what was offered. Quotations re
main unaltered—26<v M> 82 cents A good
deal is arriving for storage.
Our remarks upou the repacking of oot
fon in our quotations of Friday arc pro
bably liable to misoenslruciion What
we rneaut is amply this If cotton is
carefully repacked, like it is at the screws
in Columbus, the same kind of cotton
plaited in a bale, and the ruined ootlon
thrown away, there is no difference made
between it and other cotton When how
ever, cotton is carelully repacked, odds
and ends mixed in a bale, diff rent grades
mingled, there is a difference of between
eight aud len cents made.
In Montgomery a few bales of cotton
have sold as high as 33 oenl3.

five hundred pounds of oottnn Columbus

from which this cotton was shipped, but
by far the greater portion of it was sent
from Columbus. A great deal of it was

The River.
This little concern is rapidly degenera
ting into a small sizad oreek The muddy
pioajunish affair runs sluggishly along,
being doggedly determined uot to rise un
til rain fails, and a plenty of it. Our
river is nearly played out and will soon
become a hogpond. A little wttile and
fording will be easy. At present it is
about as useless as a bushel of Confede
