I’iAUcvhurtliy Society.
A society bas been for some lime inau
gurated among the colored people of Co
lumbus, the object of which is highly
praiseworthy. Its object is to raise funds
to assist the aged and infirm, to relieve
the distresses of those who oannot help
themaelves, and to see that the dead have
a decent burial. The conducting of the
business is in the hands of men who sue that
the ends of the organization are fuliy ear
ned out. Particular care is taken in re
lieving the distressed, not to encourage
the idle and dissolute. May all such so
cieties prosper, say we.
Cottaa.
Yesterday the market was decidedly
flat. Very little brought in fur storage,
and but lew bales sold. Some brought
less than liO oents. The class disposed of
embraced some inferior bales. The quo
tations of the day might be embraced in
the limits of 20 and 31 o.—a very wide
margin. The tendency of tbe market is
downward
We again repeat the statement that
when ooiton is repacked with u&ra no
difference is made in prices between it
and other bales.
Meeting of Mo. 5 lOleotlwu of Officer*.
At a meeting of Eire Engine Cos. No. 5,
on Tuesday night, the following officers
were eleoted: President, Frank W. Gold
en ; Vice President, Julius Alexander;
Foreman, W. H. Williams; Ist Assistant
Foreman, Kobt. Sheridan ; 2d Assistant
Foreman, Fred. Mathews ; Secretary, Geo.
Flournoy ; Treasurer, Chas. E, Booher— a
corps of able officers
A Constitution and By-Laws were
adopted.
Tbe engine was removed yesterday af
ternoon to McKee’s carriage shop, a part
of the lower floor having been tendered
them free of rant by Col. llines Holt, who
is acting as agent for Mr. MoKae.
Proposed Strike Among tlie Negroes.
On Monday night there was a large
meeting held in one of the colored
churches, and the question proposed was
a strike tor higher wages among the col
ored people. We are told that several
speakers announced that the black had
served the white man long enough, and
they must now compete, as respects labor,
on terms of equality with him. Some of
the mechanics go so far as to demand five
dollars a day—more than the majority of
the white men make. The objeot was to
disgrace all who consented to work for
less wages than tbe strikers demand. The
speakers, however, condemned etrongly
thieving and idleness. The meetings thus
far have resulted in nothing but the ap
pointment of committees.
We are confidently assured that the
better olass of our colored population
have nothing to do with this business, and
are using their influence against it. If a
strike is adopted the negro will be the
only sufferer. Strikes to effect damage,
especially in cases like the present, when
workmen are plentiful and labor scarce,
have played out.
The ICleetlow—The Cowkty Nominees

Tbe eleotion passed off quietly yester
day. There were 740 votes polled iu Co
lumbus. There were only two precincts
in the county open. The following is tbe

Annoyances from Soldiers.
Mr. John Donelly, who keeps a grocery
store oh the oornor of Thomas and For
syth streets, informs U3 that his establish
ment was rather roughly treated on Tues
day . night by soldiers. They wero in
search of liquor, and notwithstanding his
denials, insisted that he bad the article,
and finally briokbatted to some extent his
house, but fortunately did no damage.
They kept np tho annoyanco from ten to
one o’clock, but finally they were induced
by Mr. D. to leave.

We heard yesterday a gentleman wbo
received the information direct, tell of an
iustanoe of rare occurrence as respects
fidelity to contracts. Immediately after a
decision was rendered in Cincinnati iu re
gard to Blind Tom in favor of Gen By.
thune, a Yankee and a nogro started for
Columbus to induce Mingo, the tinner of
Blind Tom, to break his oouiract with Gen.
B. Twelve thousand dollars in specie
were offered him and the money exhibit
ed. Mingo was loth to break his engage
ment, and sought, the advice of Mack
Stewart, ths pastor of ibe colored Metho
dist Church in and stated to
Him the proffers made. Muck asked if he
had mado a contract with Gen. B. He
replied “yes,” and that he was more wil
ling that his son should be with him than
with any one else. Then replied Mack iu
substance, “don’t break your contract, no
matter what they offer you,” and Mingo
has followed the couusel. This is a sim
ple tale, but it is one rarely found in fact
in this world of ours. The man who gives
such counsel and the one who followed A
are worthy exemplars in this reaped, of
imitation by all.
